She looks like the daughter of Martha Quinn.

(I'm kind of hoping this actually isn't Idolator "Becky," because I want to like her.)

fyi an undercover operative hit me up with this:

That's possible -- Robbie is Facebook friends with her.

And while the whole freedom angle with the cover art is pretty evident—Doves in flight! The sky’s the limit!—

Guys, I wrote some bad sentences and papers in college, but that shit is unforgivable.

kshighway1, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)

An old Idolator cover art feature would comment on the poor font choices and excessive image retouching and the complete WTF concepts. Nu-Idolator just points out that Alicia Keys is a Whitney Houston stan. NEWS FLASH

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, the Becky Bain thing is pretty much confirmed now since she's posting about the Green Day musical on Idolator after doing the same on twitter.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 23:42 (sixteen years ago)

I guess now guys can stop complaining when their girlfriends get bitchy once a month in the hopes that they turn into Rihanna.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

nothing to add here really except to add to the chorus. to be real, idolator was on the decline (and why wouldnt it be? they had some great writers they had to let go) and i pretty much expected major changes within the next few months, but the gap b/w even the site's more recent less-than-compelling stuff and this middle school my-first-article dreck is sudden and disheartening

k3vin k., Tuesday, 10 November 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

if anything, you can go back and see all the really cool stuff the site's put up over the last few years. it was a really cool niche while it lasted

QFT

it's not like the writing wasn't on the wall. or that maura's farewell came as a surprise. but the drastic change in... um... tenor feels like a real insult to anyone who ever bookmarked the URL.

like, just close the fucker down and be done with it because unless you're paying robbie and becky actual peanuts you could finish out your impression obligations to Pronto Style with an RSSbot and more dignity.

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

I just get the impression that Maura wasn't afforded the luxury of winding things down on her own terms. More like it was a quick and dirty firing and she was allowed to make a goodbye post.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:18 (sixteen years ago)

tbh it pisses me off a little when people say things like it had been on the decline, considering that there was no change in the quality of maura's posts and she was probably madder than anyone about the loss of freelancer contributions.

as much as it sucks to watch something i cared about and was proud to be a small part of get totally fucked up, it's at least nice to see a lot of other people from outside it up in arms about this.

some dude, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

Maura's posts were still spot-on to the very end, loved 'em. But without a carousel of writers that once populated the site, you could tell she chose to phone it in some days. That's Buzznet's fault, not hers. I hope the next time we see her, she'll be the head of a crew similar to (or even the same as) the one that dominated Idolator from late 2007 up until late 2008/early 2009.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

al that's why i said it wasn't her fault - maura was still good at what she did but it did hurt the site to lose those contributors (like uh, you) and on top of that, the page views and comments were slowly decreasing. all i meant was that the end was near, and it's sad to see it happen like this, which i'm sure no one wanted

k3vin k., Wednesday, 11 November 2009 01:06 (sixteen years ago)

i stopped reading it regularly when all the contributors left.

kshighway1, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 01:41 (sixteen years ago)

i wish i had kept doing my column for free for a few extra months like Molanphy did, but a lot of shit was going on, and when my commenting account was screwed up for so long i was like i don't wanna post something and then not be able to respond to feedback and have a conversation about it

some dude, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 01:47 (sixteen years ago)

My commenting account was screwed up for a long time as well, Buzznet doesn't seem to be competent on any level.

yeah and another good thing about the site was this atmosphere of like, "hey guys, i had this great idea, here's a piece i made about it, whaddya think?" - regular readers could comment on or criticize intelligently and the writer would usually engage in the discussion too. kind of funny to see the difference in today's posts...there's really no use in having a comments section IMO if the writers aren't gonna try to engage w/ the feedback. (altho tbf there hasn't been much real contsructive feedback, mostly because of the dearth of actual CONTENT.)

k3vin k., Wednesday, 11 November 2009 01:59 (sixteen years ago)

it's so difficult to get that sort of dynamic going anywhere, so this is definitely something that Maura's Idolator should be commended for.

Stylus down, PTW down, now Idolator down. :-(

AT LEAST WE HAVE TINYMIXTAPES

kshighway1, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 02:21 (sixteen years ago)

the thing is pretty much all the writers involved in all those outfits are still writing, just maybe less organized under a banner and/or getting paid like at those places...someone good at selling adspace and enough people willing to advertise on music sites are really the only the two ingredients that make it easier said than done to get a site like one of those going for a sustained amount of time.

some dude, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 02:25 (sixteen years ago)

definitely! the only thing imo is that a "big" site like a Stylus or Idolator, with a stable of excellent writers and a community of engaged readers, is a much more interesting and powerful thing than a diffuse network comprised of the same people writing for varied blogs, alt-weeklies, Twitter feeds, forums, etc.

kshighway1, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 02:31 (sixteen years ago)

kshighway1 OTM. There's a certain critical mass (Robbie: Wooo high five for awesome puns!!) necessary to jump start a flow of conversation and a sizeable audience.

Johnny Fever bringing the lols:

So now that Idolator is headquartered in Los Angeles, does that mean we’re going to have to wait until midday for the first posts to appear? If so, lame. Wise editors who understand readership would start waking up at 4 am PST to get the ball rolling every day. This means you, Robbie.

This thread got kinda confusing... I thought it was merely about a list of crappy 00s songs reviewed in Maura's/Whiney's blog, but apparently there's a whole lot of behind-the-scenes politics going on I know nothing about.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 11:33 (sixteen years ago)

So, apparently the list will not be completed now? I guess I should unbookmark this thread then.
