I want to meet him so I can say "ladies love cool james" in a variety of increasingly silly voices until he goes INSANE. Or twats me

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

he is a great example of how ladies do love cool james's.

classic now dud (although the track he did about booty (i think it was with ludacris????? was pretty cool) so i guess he is classic with the occasional daliance in to dud

james (james), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Lately, massive dud. Early on, classic.

maria b (maria b), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Are those beefcake videos meant to be totally over-the-top?

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone who thinks LL fell off should go download "the ripper strikes back" right now

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, every video he's made is supposed to be over the top.
He's such a little post-modern prankster!

(Jess, one hot song does not a career revival make)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean all the low-angle shots of LL rubbing his bare chest and licking his lips....

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic. The Rod Stewart of the rap world. Unstoppable, immediately identifiable, even when it's crap, it's LL's crap, and could be no one else's.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

he doesn't need a career revival! he never went anywhere! he's the only rapper who's managed a (successful) career for this long! stop hatin!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I like his stuff, tho not nearly as much as I used to (he changed, not me). I think he does that kiss-his-finger-and-toss-kiss-to-"girl" thing waaay too much, too; irritates the hell out of me.

matt riedl (veal), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"the ripper strikes back"..... downloaded. mind unchanged, sorry.

maria b (maria b), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic, on Adam F's album Kaos he totally ace's it on 'The Greatest of All Time' pure bragging bullshitting goodness...and that bass sound...woah. :)

Maimonides (Maimonides), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

First song off new album:

"It's LL and Santana"

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 00:19 (twenty years ago)

my defense of LL on this thread is a little extreme

strongo hulkington is a guy with a belly button piercing (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Untoppable as a stage performer.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Extremity in the defense of LL is no vice!

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Extremism, I mean.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Not everybody can be as even-tempered and realistic about LL as K is, strongo.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I gradually have realized that LL is a really horrible actor.

Zwan (miccio), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 01:18 (twenty years ago)

Gradually?

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:47 (twenty years ago)

It took a while to get over my desire to enjoy his presence in films like Deep Blue Sea, Halloween H20 and Mindhunters.

"eenie meanie minie mo, which muthafucka's the next to go?"

Fools! After the mountains have crumbled to dust and the western winds blow your ashes across the horizon, El El will still be there. Forever.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

Man, I got the new album with Canibus on it (Cloak n Dagga), and he's STILL dissing LL. I mean, LL knocked him the fuck out like six years ago, and he still hasn't gotten over it. Is there a word for someone who just keeps trying to fight after they've been beaten and forgotten? (By the way, that album's pretty shitty, though often inadvertantly hilarious).

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

The new LL/J-Lo single is horrible.

LL has been corny as hell for years.

LL knocked him the fuck out like six years ago

LL hasn't knocked *anyone* the fuck out since like '91

Chris Bergen (Cee Bee), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

second round KO was so much better than any of LL's disses against canibus.

i love LL though.. he's a pip.

does he still have that skinny moustache? that freaked me out for real.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

second round KO was so much better than any of LL's disses against canibus.

so true

Chris Bergen (Cee Bee), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm just playing, I actually forgot L.L. was great in Woo. "Take off your clothes."

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

And for the record, too classic to ever be anything but classic. Radio was the first compact disc I bought.

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

classic for facing down fox news' bizzare use of an old interview. wtf to fox's snippy put-down of a response (we "wish him the best with his fledgling acting career")

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 1 April 2010 01:54 (sixteen years ago)

fledgling since the movie Toys, yeah.

what I am taking away from the first three tracks on Authentic is that LL is way more interested in collaborating with people than he is in making a cohesive album

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

you say that as if that's at all unique for the past 15 years of hip hop

bish don't kmt (some dude), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

not at all unique, just... this is so LAZY

bish don't kmt (some dude), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

my entire hip-hop existence is defined by giving older dudes a massive pass and I've been pro-LL through "Headsprung" so the degree to which this whole thing is just a bland belly flop is legitimately upsetting

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

okay bland is maybe not the best word to describe "We're The Greatest", lol

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

LL, and increasingly Jay-Z, are kind of in a category to me of artists who've already had such unprecedented longevity that at this point anything good they do is just a bonus round and anything that sucks is like, well, they had a good run.

bish don't kmt (some dude), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

Someone I know said something very funny on FB:

"Gonna be funny if we have a hip-hop veteran renaissance where making better than usual music without sweating pop is in fashion, until Andre 3000 looks at his pan pipes and goes 'well now I feel like a schmuck.'"

This album exceeds any hype about it. So great. For those who buy vinyl, (the Euro pressing at least) sounds fantastic.

Sick, I had like a 20 minute convo with a music writer yesterday about this album. Album is touching all the bases but not fitting into any sort of critical paradigm we're used to seeing

The SoyBoy West Coast (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 18:22 (one year ago)

Whiney your LL piece was great - loved how candid he was in some of his responses! great read

and the album is so good, i’m really enjoying it

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 19:58 (one year ago)

Thank you so much. I chalk a lot of the good responses to them letting me have an hour with him. He was VERY happy when I told him *my* favorite LL line ("I'm the type of guy that picks her up from work early/Takes her to breakfast, lunch, dinner, and breakfast.")

The SoyBoy West Coast (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 20:07 (one year ago)

I can't believe how hard they went on this album. Agree w/ the comment that the production even outdoes the last Tribe album.

This album, my god. I can't think of a record I've heard in recent times where every track just hits so hard. Like, the first six tracks is just a flawless run

Sade of the Del Amitri (dog latin), Friday, 13 September 2024 10:39 (one year ago)

I love the song lengths in the second half. It moves along really nicely.

jmm, Friday, 13 September 2024 13:57 (one year ago)

kills, so nice. if you like olds-in-the-know in-jokes or rap dad joeks, they’re everywhere without seeming like they’re the object of it all. when the numan same hit i was just “fuck it this is how it needs to go.”

i was listening to some assorted older LL tracks yesterday and was wondering if "going back to cali" is rick rubin's best production. i love all the little drum machine (808?) percussion hits combined with the live horns. i was trying to find an article or something about the production but didn't see much.

na (NA), Wednesday, 9 July 2025 19:15 (eleven months ago)

the little kalimba melody! how the beat jumps into doubletime and back!

na (NA), Wednesday, 9 July 2025 19:19 (eleven months ago)

one month passes...

i haven't listened to any rap album like this since the dj quik/kurupt blaqkout album. half the beats sound sampled from a broadcast album. the beats q-tip must have at his disposal. the seamless transitions. the fact LL does not for a second slow down on any song.
