Sonic Youth were great; it was their first visit back to Chicago since the infamous Public Enemy / Sonic Youth show and the ensuing riot. They opened with "Tom Violence" and dedicated it to the Chicago Police and just played a blistering set.
Oh, and Neil ruled too.

During The Locust's set the hardcore guys are at the front running around and slamming into each other, and then when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs go on the front is full of punkette Lizzie McGuires holding up cell phones and digital cameras.

Not nearly as good as when my mom and grandma got to see that above-mentioned Hendrix/Monkees fiasco.
Also: Tom Waits w/ Fishbone.

Of course, these aren't so weird when you've worked in the music biz like I have and got used to the fact that agents arrange bills for reasons never to do with music whatsoever- it's all money and backhanders.
Others that spring to mind: Raging Slab and Claytown Troupe? Manic Street Preachers and Credit To The Nation? Black Crowes and Verve? Actually, that's not too odd. Verve were a rock band then, before they became 'The' Verve and started wearing Moccassins and twat-hats.

And I thought Earth Wind & Fire/Chicago was weird….

My friend was just telling me about seeing Genesis in Philly maybe '83, at JFK, with Elvis Costello, Blondie, Robert Hazard (maybe), the Hooters and Flock of Seagulls opening.

yeah that's kind of weird. LiveNation package tour I assume; they're also doing: Liz Phair/Garbage/Alanis Morrissette. I can see some level of commonality there but frankly, almost no one I personally know who would like to see Garbage has any interest in anything by Liz Phair after 1994 and wouldn't be caught dead at an Alanis show.

maybe I'm just projecting but I think there's a decent amount of overlap between Garbage and Phair fans, not so much with Alanis.

everything becomes classic rock eventually is how I break it down to an extent
I think Phair/Alanis/Garbage is a great bill, and makes a lot of sense.

the LiveNation listing is a pretty frank assessment of each act's relative commerical appeal:Alanis Morissette w/special guest Garbage & also appearing Liz Phair

Saw Elvis and Blondie on that tour, outside (Parade Stadium in Minneapolis) at what I think they called a Beer and Barbecue Festival, along with Duran Duran, Greg Kihn and locals Sussman Lawrence (Peter Himmelman). Elvis was great (and the Durans).
