* I love Ciara but Cassie's part-Filipina-ness is almost a trump card* she hails from the Long Day's Journey Into Night town* the erotic subtext (supertext just about) vs. detached delivery = cool evocation of post-industrial nightlife meat-market malaise? = half-hearted surrender to/embrace of the meat-market model of urban social interaction OR mere happy-accident tension betw unpolished vox & run-of-the-mill r&b motifs?* the bittersweet emaciation of Me & U's falling clave blips is almost snap* Long Way 2 Go has a sorta baroque video-game aesthetic that I can get behind in a big way* Ryan Leslie's original ideal/masterplan for Cassie: "multi-ethnic, non-genre specific voice" vs. the actual reality of "non-ethnic, multi-genre specific voice"??
HMMMM

Are you referring to my last post? It was just a silly response to the "But she can't even sing!" nonsense. (Plus, it's probably the truth as well.) I could've also posted "I might like Shellac if Steve Albini could belt like Paul Rodgers."

Just discovering her album. It's tremendous! I prefer it to the new Amerie and Rihanna.
Long Way 2 Go hooked me in (funny MySpace-themed video!) and it's the delightful pop of Ditto and smouldering of Kiss Me that I'm currently stuck on.
― Alba, Monday, 28 May 2007 13:27 (nineteen years ago)
Rumor has it she got dropped from Bad Boy.
This makes me a sad panda.
― The Brainwasher, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)
Siik (the dude who made that jazzy remix of Amerie's "1 Thing" a couple years back also remixed "Me & U" and again, it sounds like a completely different song. It's great.
― Wookie Rookie, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)
yeah the siik remix is pretty awesome
i guess the album didnt sell v. well? cuz it pretty much ruled from end to end (a lot of this was leslies production, anyone know anything else of note hes done?)
― nervous, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)
cassie :(
the other two noteworthy ryan leslie productions i've heard - both v much in the same gently minimalist vein - are the new megan rochell single, 'my mistake', and 'like that', off the jojo album. both v well worth hearing.
― lex pretend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)
is the whole jojo album worth checking out? i hadnt seen the list of producers till just now, a veritable whos who of hiphop-pop crossover appeal
― nervous, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)
it is, mostly - it's not exactly consistent but she does a v good beyonce impression on the swizz beats track, the storch one is surprisingly r leslie-esque (thought that was his one for ages), there's a really nice digitised country thing...
― lex pretend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)
oh yeah i didn't realise this before i heard the new album but jojo can really sing
― lex pretend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
BOOOOOO. "Sometimes" is great!
― Tape Store, Monday, 18 June 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)
Turns out she wasn't dropped by Bad Boy thankfully. New album Still Cassie due out in October.
― The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 08:17 (eighteen years ago)
YEAHH!
― baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 08:47 (eighteen years ago)
The new single is kinda mediocrish.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)
YOU'RE WRONG.
― Tape Store, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)
Well, if you say.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)
Exactly.
"Me & U" = Sinister and Seductive "Sometimes" = Unsure and Sweet
They use the same sound effects, and they're both based around the same setup (verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge for "Me & U"/guest spot for "Sometimes"-chorus). They're like cousin tracks...Obv. "Me & U" is better, but "Sometimes" goes down just as easily.
"Me & U" >>>>> "Sometimes" >> "Long Way 2 Go"
― Tape Store, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)
I want this album. Sure, as a single, "Turn the Lights Off" is a bit of a letdown, but I now prefer "Is It You" to "Sometimes" and maybe even "Me & U." That fuzzy guitar, the perfect structure and hook. Oh, and Cassie sound sweet and soulful...it's perfect.
― Tape Store, Sunday, 14 October 2007 03:33 (eighteen years ago)
This thread is absurd without pictures! "Me & U" is CLASSIC.

― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 14 October 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)
OK OK. I underestimated this "Turn the Lights Off" track, but I'm not going for this "In Love With the DJ" one. BLAAAH.
Cassie, Based on those first three tracks, this could be my number one album of the year. Don't fuck up! <3 -tape store
― Tape Store, Saturday, 20 October 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)
Shit, I never heard Me&U before I clicked on this thread. So daringly empty, Its basically her and that snare for the first minute. I dig minimalism.
― I know, right?, Saturday, 20 October 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)
uh, not to keep bumping this, but I just listened to "Sometimes" with the bass up. There's this fucking amazing growling noise going on throughout the entire thing. AWESOME.
― Tape Store, Saturday, 27 October 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, "Sometimes" is still the best leaked song IMO... followed by "Turn The Lights Off"
The album is due out in February now, btw.
