i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

i think one of the unintroduced tensions in this stuff is the feeling that he's gonna eventually run out of ways to say stuff! like, look at how many images he 'burns' in just that diamonds hook i just quoted ... its like, you feel the need to hear it all cuz at some pt hes just simply gonna run out of ideas ... (admittedly this may be a more fan/obsessive perspective than casual fan one)

i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

i think that too but then he writes a chorus like the one in "excuse me"

brrrmuda triangle (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

stuff like the multiple sweet=cavity lines make me feel like he's not that far off sometimes (although even as i say that "Follow Me" might my favorite song off these recent tapes)

some dude, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

Ummm, maybe he could talk about something other than cars, ice and women?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

it seems like every few months he gets stuck on a few different words that populate his songs of that time and then he kind of moves off onto something else. on burrprint/cold war there are lots of uses of "sauna" & i don't think i remember him using "ornament" up until v recently.

not much to that except that maybe he's still got a bunch of words to fixate on and grow off of. kind of just an observation tho.

i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

man I want to be able to re-parse "repetitive" with as much verve as deej does here

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

i think one thing i like about how he talks about cars, ice & women is ... i always think of one of the first pieces of rap writing that really got me thinking, & it was kelefa sanneh on jay-z right before blueprint dropped -- he was talking about how jay's tendency w/ bragging about that kind of shit was that it was ultimately empty, that jay-z was not a hedonist, he was all about status -- you never know how the champagne tastes, etc -- anyway with gucci its still very much about status, no doubt, but there's also an element of joyousness (and most definitely hedonism) in his descriptions of his status symbols ... they're not 'just' symbols, they color his world -- plus his party songs are obviously far more hedonistic

i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

I was just being dense when I mentioned cars, ice and women. Of course he raps about other stuff. (And yeah, Timothy and Dope Boys from Burrprint are ridic).

Also, DJ Scream - his voice is makes me just think of Westwood at his worst. It's terrible.

Makes me think that Wu-Tang might not just influence the beats, the second Ghost verse on

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esme7cRZu7o

seems like a precursor to Gucci's way.

this really isn't it though. he just riffs on hyper-specific themes & sometimes he repeats some things to sort of stay grounded, like how a freestyle rapper keeps some rhymes in his head to restart himself

ha kind of

i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

'wasted' could be an h.s. song

i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

this usher / gucci single is infuriating

i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

"no competition" is beautiful but that last verse is just gross. like, eugh.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah shame it'll be on the album xpost

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

i think gucci is writing their verses

i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

really? i'd be surprised, and anyways i meant more just his nasty ass voice

i love gucci's verses on "spotlight", but that hook's uh, unfortunate.

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

its awful. its so clear whoever conceived that song doesnt get his music at all

i got nothin (deej), Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

it's really a shame - where is the polow of "throw some d's" & "pimpin all over the world" & "get buck"

it's like the record label wanted a ciara record and not a record that could appeal to his rap fanbase & a crossover audience

u madoff (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

i mean look at the comments section of the youtube -- its this totally confused cross section of ppl who only like parts of the song not enjoyed by the others

i got nothin (deej), Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

although i think it's pretty clear that gucci has a hard time writing really dope verses on crossover r&b singles. he definitely dumbs himself down, and i think it's a mixture of him not being as creative a lothario as lil wayne & ludacris, and him having in his head an idea of what a crossover verse should be, and it doesn't seem to involve all the things that make him a great rapper

u madoff (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

like, wayne & luda improved, and arguably in some sense, made their reps with having unusually awesome verses on would-be boring girl songs. gucci's rep is taking a hit especially because lots of people have first been confronted with him via "break up" & "lol :-)" & now "spotlight"

u madoff (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

in some ways i want the song to flop so they release something that's not so head-smackingly obvious & bad, but if it is a huge hit for him then i guess i'll feel okay about it

u madoff (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i mean...i know some of you guys like "lollipop" but it never ceases to amaze me how some rappers can build a following releasing hundreds and hundreds of songs just kinda being themselves and doing what comes naturally, and then when it comes time to make a single end up with some bizarre miscalculation of what their appeal is or what their career needs.

some dude, Thursday, 22 October 2009 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but lollipop wasn't a miscalculation of anything. it was a perfect calculation.

i def. agree that gucci is dumbing himself down on the big rnb verses but 'girls are like buses, miss one next 15 one comin, which is definitely his most popular line with mainstream listeners (which some random entourage member cites as such on one of the recent mixtapes), is pretty weird and essential gucci, when it comes down to it. so i think there's hope.

Jacques_Lamure, Thursday, 22 October 2009 03:58 (sixteen years ago)

he just riffs on hyper-specific themes & sometimes he repeats some things to sort of stay grounded,

i know this is prob a trite analogy but this is the type of stuff that brings me back to gucci...he comes from a jazz impulse rather a blues or gospel one...he has his musical parameters, his favorite lyrical themes, and just goes in on them, improvising slightly with each new verse but always retuning to some grounded base that changes slightly with each new song. it's nothing new being repetitive, when a musician is in that zone and they're a virtuoso no one should top them.

Whay!ney G. Welldamnen (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Thursday, 22 October 2009 04:35 (sixteen years ago)

by musical parameters I mean ZAYTOVEN!!! not a bad rhythm section

Whay!ney G. Welldamnen (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Thursday, 22 October 2009 04:35 (sixteen years ago)

also xp: *"stop them" not "top them

i'm white boy wasted tonight...oj/wacka was fun btw
