You know, I always used to slag off people who were too "lazy" to do their own searching for music, and relied on DJs to do it for them, but now, swimming in the nu-media soup, I'm starting to understand.
It's weird. Back when I was a music journo, my problem was, again and again too much SHITE music. Now I dictate mine own listening choices, there's too much GOOD music.

Full version of the Robbie Williams remix here
I'd be nice to hear a dub mix of this one
― groovypanda, Friday, 23 October 2009 13:20 (fourteen years ago) link
I really love it, vocals and all.
But then again, I have nothing against Robbie Williams, unlike most of the people that seem to be rubbishing his vocals.
― Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Friday, 23 October 2009 13:21 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah i'm kind of allergic to robbie williams' presence. you can always sense it bobbing up and down with a wacky grin on its face. shudder.
Back when I was a music journo, my problem was, again and again too much SHITE music. Now I dictate mine own listening choices, there's too much GOOD music.
so many music journos i know complain about all the music they hear being shite...i'm like, how about just ignoring 90% of what PRs send you and exploring for yourself?
― lex pretend, Friday, 23 October 2009 13:33 (fourteen years ago) link
It took me several years and at least two moves before I dodged all the PRs lists. (Mostly they've got the point now that Plan B no longer exists.)
Problem is, so often it's this delicate game of "scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" - that in order to get access to artists you like, and get favours from them, you have to return the favour of listening to crap they send you.
But this has nothing to do with Aeroplane or Robbie Williams.
I'm just really kinda disgusted by all the Erolheads who are suddenly going "UGH, Aeroplane SOLD OUT coz they remixed Robbie Williams." That makes me wanna slap people.
― Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Friday, 23 October 2009 13:37 (fourteen years ago) link
RW remix sucks.
Haven't listened to this new mix yet, could that "unknown" track be something off their album?
― plazzTT, Saturday, 24 October 2009 03:08 (fourteen years ago) link
I like the RW remix and don't adore the Doves ones
― okamadablobisney (jamescobo), Saturday, 24 October 2009 04:34 (fourteen years ago) link
I like the RW a heck of a lot better than that kind of sleepwalking Au Revoir Simone remix they did recently.
Oh! I didn't even think that was what the "unknown" track might have been. I got so lost in there that I lost the ability to figure out which track was which by about halfway through.
― Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 08:42 (fourteen years ago) link
^cosign! it's kinda fun! the au revoir simone one is the only thing they've ever touched that i would actually say is truly awful
― psychgawsple, Saturday, 24 October 2009 09:30 (fourteen years ago) link
Hey, that ARS track is not awful or anything. It's just uninspired.
The Robbie one has that feeling of "hey, we can just have fun with this"
― Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 09:38 (fourteen years ago) link
So, did they just do that? It's just that his version of "Lovelight" was on "RudeBox", and that was ages ago...
(I got a copy cheap, and think there's nothing wrong with it!)
― Mark G, Saturday, 24 October 2009 09:54 (fourteen years ago) link
That Au Revoir Simone remix is good for the italo freakout part alone.

It's nice, but I don't actually like it as much as the Time and Space Machine remix. Which is so psychedelic I had to stop and go "wait, is this *really* Doves?!?"
Speaking of twitter, I do wish that Aeroplane and Joakim would stop gossiping in French on twitter. I know enough French to know they're talking about some big secret, but not enough to know what it IS. Silly boys. Do they not know about direct messages or do they do this on purpose?

Nothing much new or exciting so far, but perfectly reasonable listening while I clean the flat.

OK, listening to that remix, I'm realising that Aeroplane really do use all kinds of sounds that I would just think "whoa, that is totally completely cheesy!" - but somehow they pull it together and make it sound great.

I don't think they have a May mix. the one I know from May is this: http://www.discobelle.net/2008/05/25/aeroplane-flying-mix/
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 November 2009 11:54 (fourteen years ago) link
Um that Flying mix is almost a year and a half old now. Still a great mix though.
Also I'm fairly sure the monthly chart mixes only started in June and the first couple aren't that great. The last two have been much better though and seem to have benefited from a bit more thought rather than just sticking their favourite 10 tunes of the month together in a mix.
― groovypanda, Friday, 20 November 2009 12:03 (fourteen years ago) link
I thought the June one was boss.
I've got all of them, though I've mislabeled and have two Augusts and no July. Don't have the tracklist for one, so if anyone can clarify, let me know. I can upl0@d these if people want them.
― The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Friday, 20 November 2009 12:07 (fourteen years ago) link
I really liked the October mix, especially the Maurice Fulton remix of SMD that starts it.
The Take Off Mix that I think is also from last year is well worth tracking down, as it's much slower, more balearic, rather than their glossy indie-dance disco pop, which I also love.
I think the mix charts are a fab idea, even if they're not something you'd necessarily keep. Wish more people did them.

I saw Aeroplane a couple of weeks ago and man, it's not really what i had expected. It's like hearing bits from their monthly mixes. No classic except for "Show Me Love" and it's not even a disco track. No balearic-ish stuff either. I'd say I'm disappointed if not for the fact that I had fun singing along to some songs. Anyone had the same experience?
