Graham Lewis is a gloomy gus. In the new Wire DVD he tells the audience to keep the noise down; then when someone requests "I Am The Fly" after "I Should Have Known Better," he mumbles in his best John Houseman voice: "We don't PLAY requests."

i love when Alfred Soto shows up on threads and he's all like "hey guys, I just heard this canonical album two days ago! i don't like it so much!" seriously Alfred, how sad is your listening history? Like, you are sort of young and haven't heard a lot of music, yeah? at least, I get that impression from yr posts. no offense or anything, you are probably a totally nice guy and whatnot. but damn do you ever fulfill all of my stereotypes of a poor listener. have you ever played an instrument ever? why are you having so much trouble with your ears?

I mean, Miccio, it's not even worth responding to. We all know he's a joke. What's weird is that I like SOME of our posts Alfred, but then you post craziness like this. don't get it.

Not too keen on their debut, but "154" I like. These days I feel like getting a bit too much of an overdose of the entire postpunk thing, but I don't blame Wire for that. Nice album.

i switch between preferring this and Chairs Missing. these days I listen to 154 more. i voted it #1 in the 70s poll! i was never a 15 year old goth though, so maybe i'm making up for 'lost' time.

Having lived with said canonical album for about 8 years, Stormy, I know whereof I speak. Dilettantes don't happen to own "154."

As for not playing an instrument, geez, can an argument be any lamer? You don't know if I play an instrument; and if I didn't, how would that make "154" a more rewarding experience?

Also, word from the Wire camp is that Bruce Gilbert has left the group, leaving Wire mark 3 in jeopardy. Colin's Githead album will be out this year though...

Classic. I can't seem to get into anything else by Wire, though. I suppose it's because they never made anything darker in sound.

I wish I could explain what it feels like to suddenly, clearly see the full value of an album you first tried very hard to get into about 17-18 years ago and just couldn't see it. And I tried in 2001-2 as well, and just couldn't see it. And now it's all very clear. And I can't put that into words, what that feels like.

classic - the Sgt. Pepper's of punk(/postpunk)

lyrically/vocally I see it as something to work through, beyond (kill this buddha, the road leads on)
love "Blessed State" though - an all time fave:
"loved in the flesh, but butchered in the mind"

sonically awesome - production masterpiece + terrific hooks and sounds.
much Cocteau Twins seems a worthy continuation of parts of 154 -
e.g. intro to "A Touching Display"

one review at the time (Rolling Stone?) read: Wire, Get Out Of Marienbad (!!!)
