1. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys (17/11/66)
1024 points, 29 votes, 3 #1s.

I, I love the colourful clothes she wears, and the way the sunlight plays upon her hair...

http://troubled-diva.com/ilm/i-goodv.jpg

Has to be the ultimate pop song as epic, surely. It has everything.
- David Merryweather

Nothing the Beatles did could touch "Good Vibrations" or "Heroes & Villians" (well, maybe "She Said...").
- Mark @ pitchforkmedia

I always thought that "Good Vibrations" was the most expensive single ever (inflation taken into account). At least at the time it was I think. Brian Wilson spent several months and about 5 studios on it. Plenty of takes and orchestration and the theremin...
- Tim Baier

How is good vibrations NOT a novelty song? It's built around a catch phrase of the day and a cameo by a wacky instrument.
- fritz wollner

I always thought the theremin in Good Vibrations was the best part of the song.
- Carey

Every few months I walk past a certain building and am convinced that someone is blasting Good Vibrations out of an upstairs window, but it's an air conditioner that does a startling mimic of a theremin.
- holojames

i discovered via the magic of remastering that the tape edits in "good vibrations" are painfully noticeable.
- fact checking cuz
I hate that first one sometimes, right when "I'm picking up good vibrations" comes in. You don't even need a remastered version to hear it. It's pretty bad.
- maypang
that's what you get for mixing while tripping.
- fact checking cuz

The bit in Good Vibrations after the bridge just before they go "AAAAAAAAAH!" is the thickest bit of silent air ever recorded.
- dog latin

I hate the end of ‘Good Vibrations’; there’s a real quick fade-out (less than two seconds, probably) just when the theremin gets going.
- Orange

I've never thought Mike Love was that great of a singer. Way too nasaly, almost sardonic and apathetic. Listen to "Good Vibrations". It starts off so good until you get to Love's "I'm picking up good vibrations..." I picture him singing that part with his arms folded, eyes rolled, and foot tapping outside of the beat. Kill him by drowning him in Sunkist.
- Pleasant Plains

I have to do a presentation tomorrow on the influence of "Be My Baby" on subsequent musicians and producers. The only examples I've got so far are The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Just Like Honey", The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" and something off Loveless. Anyone got any ideas?
- OCP

"Good Vibrations"! It's the greatest song ever written called "Good Vibrations"! Apart from the other one!
- Marcello Carlin (talking about Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I predict another win for 'Toxic'. Or 'Ghost Town'.
-- Alba (albab...), January 18th, 2005.

Or 'Good Vibrations'. One of those three!
-- Alba (albab...), January 18th, 2005.
