― psychgawsple, Friday, 13 November 2009 09:18 (sixteen years ago)
o, and my soul night will be actual soul music. like 70s southern and funk. none of that bullshit northern soul and oldies that gets passed off as soul to twee indie hipsters in SF
― jaxon, Friday, 13 November 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)
is this narcissism of small differences or a bona fide subcultural divide?
― provates: feminine plural of provato (sarahel), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)
to me it's huge ;)
― jaxon, Friday, 13 November 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)
to me, northern soul is a very white, anglo take on american soul. southern soul and funk is the backbone of hip hop. but i'm guessing this is prolly still narcissism of small differences, and coming from a white sf hipster, i shouldn't be saying much.
― jaxon, Friday, 13 November 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)
^^^think this is totally legit but primarily an anglo/American divide and seeing as how there aren't a shitload of Brits in SF seems like kinda a moot point
― Peppy Bizmilk (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)
ya, but there are a ton of anglophile suit wearing hipsters that call something a soul night and then play stuff like this. http://www.myspace.com/soulparty i mean, it's "soul" music, but not really what i'm into.
― jaxon, Friday, 13 November 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)
^^ uh, one of those guys is a friend of mine tbh

― provates: feminine plural of provato (sarahel), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
I love tons of British stuff but there is a limit to my anglophilia... like white Americans fetishizing 60s Britishers fetishizing American 60s black culture is too "through the looking glass" for me
― Peppy Bizmilk (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
not saying they're bad people. just not my thing.
― jaxon, Friday, 13 November 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)
honestly, i don't care - most of what i go to are noise shows of some variety.
― provates: feminine plural of provato (sarahel), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)
do they have dress codes
― Peppy Bizmilk (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

― provates: feminine plural of provato (sarahel), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)
ya. i've seen total shutdown before. they were fun. what happened to nate denver besides now he's rapping? and interviewing celebrities for (was it?) complex magazine
― jaxon, Friday, 13 November 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
referencing paul from soul night
no idea, didn't know N@te. B0b L1nder moved to NYC which I think is the reason that band is no more.
― provates: feminine plural of provato (sarahel), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)
sadness. they were pretty great
― Peppy Bizmilk (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)
speaking of noise-ish shows anybody here seen White Pee...? friend of mine is playing with them now but I haven't seen them yet. They did something last night in Oakland as a duo...
― Peppy Bizmilk (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 November 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)
i haven't - i was in sf last night for the Martha Colburn animation thing w/Jad Fair, Michael Evans, John from Deerhoof, etc. show.

My favorite British feteshizers of American music are Heaven 17. And I *totally* fetishize Heaven 17.

o nice. i went there once when it was Pink and it was pretty corny, but they're trying to appeal to a different crowd apparently. i've been to a few of those 'i can't feel my face' parties at amnesia (saw thomas once) and they're pretty fun
― jaxon, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 03:06 (sixteen years ago)
plus SOM is freaking GORGEOUS. big, wide open dancefloor, superb lighting, decent sound. A great improvement from Pink.
