(Belle and Sebastian put me off living)

Wow. They really ARE powerful, aren't they?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to make a correction, it was Shreddies not Wheaties that I think I was eating that day.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

it wasn't a typo Barry, it was my opinion

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I know :)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean could there BE a more annoying way of pointing out you disagree with someone on something?!?!?!

Freelance Hivechandler (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF WHERE THE HELL DID THE TIBETAN FREE-JAZZ PRESENCE GO???????????? DID NONE OF YOU HAVE EARS IN 1994???????

haha Not that they're Tiberan free jazz but I think everyone should have voted for the Siberian throat singer and Finnish minimal electronic duo I nominated for the albums list. And, yes, Indian classical music and Japanese improv were robbed.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole frickin' island of Jamaica was robbed!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

poor Buju

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole frickin' island of Malta was robbed!

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean could there BE a more annoying way of pointing out you disagree with someone on something?!?!?!
Steve, I wasn't trying to be accusatory or insult your taste. I'm sorry if it appeared as though I was. I just copied your line as a joke and used it to reflect my own tastes. I didn't mean any harm by it.
Again, sorry for the misunderstanding.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

relax, i know it's jokey, it's just annoying with it, but then it's Supercrank Stevem this week all week here

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame Belle & Sebastian.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

what time is the #1 likely to be announced? i'd like to be here for the final 10 but what with Gear on crazy time i'm not sure that'll happen.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the U.S. is

Eastern Time
Central Time
Mountain Time
Crazy Time

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I really think it's time Crazy and Mountain linked up. We need Crazy Mountain Time.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Newfietime is a half hour before all that.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the very idea that the de'lacy or amadour tracks are the best house tracks of the nineties is madness!

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny you should say that, because stevem is actually clinically insane.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Since Gear posted right before he went to bed last night, I would guess that he won't post in the morning, instead, he will post the final ten in the early afternoon, California time.

Just a guess, mind you -- one that should perhaps be ignored considering my unimpressive success rate in predicting the outcome of this poll.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

sundar wait for judgement until the albums list has been posted :)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The final 10 will be posted during an hour prime-time special in front of a live studio audience.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's going to make Jerry Springer look like an episode of 'Call My Bluff'.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll get these final mofos up between 1pm and 2pm, crazy time.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you awake now or are you sleeping?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

just don't hit me with a chair when the top ten is nothing but b-sides from The Bends

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm eating a bagel and getting ready to leave for work.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

cinnamon raisin

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

with cream cheese

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the very idea that the de'lacy or amadour tracks are the best house tracks of the nineties is madness!

what because you think something that's ACTUALLY NOT THAT DIFFERENT SOUNDING FROM THEM AT ALL is so much better?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that my numbers one (Born Slippy) and two (Unfinished Symp, though it did well) are fucked, I'm holding on for For Tomorrow.

There are no britpop heavies! You are all alone at night.

Really? I guess we'll see.

Yeah, I went there with this single and I stand by it. It may not be their "most loved single" (I mean their most loved single is probably fucking "Song 2" -- this obv means nothing, "most loved" often means most easily hateable with Blur), but Modern Life Is Rubbish is their finest hour and "For Tomorrow" is MLIR in a song.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked your comment about Coolio re 'Lovefool' roxy

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, thanks steve.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, all house music sounds the same. wtf

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i will be out of here when the top 10 are posted :-(

see you tomorrow when i have to WADE THROUGH 1000 UNREAD POSTS - largely complaining about britpop/pulp/tokenism etc.

you know i love you

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I should have nominated Weird Al's Amish Paradise.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

trickydisco i just figured you'd suggest a house track you think is soooo much better but in reality it probably wouldn't be that different. happens a lot. in any case saying someone's choice (however assertive it may be expressed) is 'madness' is just as annoying as calling it a typo.

i know i'm over-reacting but either back up such statements by suggesting something 'better' and explaining why you think, or just leave it.

surely ilm can do better than the 'yes it is, no it isn't' that tends to dominate some threads (a lot of dance ones, cos so many of us are trying to stamp our authority and knowledge down in an endless game of dick-waving oneupmanship)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The scene with the game of dick-waving oneupmanship in ILM: The Movie is a complete classic.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

look out for the DVD of this thread with 40898242 hours worth of extra babble

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i was cracking a joke (trying to be colloquial actually), steve. i wasn't trying to one-up you at all. everyone here is entitled to their own opinion...

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ah i'm just bored of that 'your choice is madness!' thing - when it comes to the polls there's a lot of this assertiveness though - the whole 'oh i can't belieeeeeeve that's this low' or 'you like x more than y?!' etc. - it just feels very predictable and forthright, as if people expect the list to match their own idea of what a top 100 would be to the letter.

the inevitable (because i will start it if no-one else does) 'post your own top 100 of the 90s' thread is gonna be fun...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem you wanna tone down the OTMness this morning? I'm starting to wear down the keys.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You rate stevem higher than me? Madness.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get the 'keys' thing!

damn these boots are starting to hurt...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the disagreement is what makes these polls interesting. consensus is boring. fwiw, what about "brighter days" by dajae?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

My prediction (I realize I am making some BOLD CLAIMS here):

1. Common People - Pulp
2. Groove is in the Heart - Deee-Lite!
3. Regulate - Warren G
4. Cannonball - The Breeders
5. Hyperballad - Bjork
6. Regret - New Order
7. Soon - My Bloody Valentine
8. Paranoid Android - Radiohead
9. Mind Playing Tricks on Me - Geto Boys
10. Windowlicker - Aphex Twin

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

things are slow at the moment here at work, so I'll get started...

#10

BJORK - "Hyperballad" (619 points, 30 votes, 1 first place vote)

http://www.abc.se/~m8996/bjork/disco/realsize/576154-2.jpg

" "Hyper-ballad" is my favourite at the moment. Odd that I used to think her lyrics were moronic. Their haiku-like genius eluded me until this."
-- sundar subramanian

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay I gotta admit I didn't see Bjork coming.
