'New' track Come To Life streaming http://www.myspace.com/audikarecords7" single released via Terrible Records today.
― bertie, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)
excited about that 7' but for some reason not so excited about the covers album though i will no doubt check it out. there aren't many arthur russell covers i've heard that can touch the original.
― stirmonster, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:04 (sixteen years ago)
God, what a fantastic track. Russell just seemed to accidentally create whole genres nobody else has even thought of--I mean, really, at what point in history would that music have made sense? 60s? 70s? 80s? 00s? None, to my ears--but it's great nevertheless. Wow. Really should have been on 'Love Is Overtaking Me'.

Anybody go to the October 10 panels in NYC at NYU?

Second the love for "Come to Life."
― Douglas, Thursday, 15 October 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)
Always surprised I never hear anyone mention More Real off Event Horizon by The Necessaries. Pop/rock Arthur in fine form. The Finish Line is pretty cool too.
― bertie, Thursday, 22 October 2009 16:12 (sixteen years ago)
"More Real" has long been one of my Russell faves, definitely. Put it on my '1981' mix even though that's a slight fib--I believe it was only on the 2nd version of the album, which wasn't 1981, I think.
― Soundslike, Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)
Does anybody know what the original tracklist for the "Corn" album was supposed to be? I've read there were multiple versions, but I've never seen any of them.
― J. Sam, Sunday, 22 November 2009 17:05 (sixteen years ago)
ok half way through tim lawrence's "hold on to your dreams" which is all and more than i hope it would be.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:08 (sixteen years ago)
ohhh, did you get a pre-release copy or is it available?
― jed_, Thursday, 26 November 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)
it's been out a couple of weeks. i had it on pre-order from amazon so got it right away.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 26 November 2009 15:59 (sixteen years ago)
cheers, will seek!
― jed_, Thursday, 26 November 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)
ah neat, I thought this was still something for the distant future. I've been meaning to read the thing he wrote on AR and Deleuze & Guattari for ages (since I stopped being annoyed that it existed when I had planned on doing something similar myself), so I have to get that out of the way first...
― FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 26 November 2009 23:53 (sixteen years ago)
Anyone know why the "Arthur Russell - See Through (Walter Gibbons Remix) (3:44)" unreleased track was removed form the "Jungle Music" comp on Strut when it seems it was on promo copies?
― crispyben, Saturday, 4 September 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)
I asked Strut not to release it as it's not a remix nor does it have anything to do with Walter Gibbons. It's part of one of Arthur's own work tapes, and best remains unheard. I was very unhappy that they actually sent out promos without the actual approval.
― Steven Knutson/Audika Records, Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)
Thanks for the insightful answer, I thought it might have something to do with that, as it is mentioned as an unfinished work in the liner notes...
― crispyben, Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)
There's a new Arthur Russell and the Flying Hearts single on iTunes: "Ballad of the Lights", featuring Allen Ginsberg.

Has anyone heard the 7" mix of Is It All Over My Face?
Guy on discogs claims it's the best male version and i seem to have a vague recollection of Mike Simonetti mentioning it being a totally different mix on his twitter. Was listening to what sounded like another alt mix on an old live Larry Levan mix and its got me wondering about what other versions are kickin around.
Speaking of alternative Russell tracks, theres a version of Calling All Kids tucked away at the very end of this Walter Gibbons tape. Don't recognise the vocals though, anyone know?

Ha, that's super. Don't think I'd heard that version of Let's Go Swimming before either.
― psychedelicatessen (seandalai), Friday, 16 September 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, it's coming out on audika this month. audikarecords.com http://audikarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Lets-Go-Swimming-12-Front-Cover1-666x659.jpg

I'd kind of overlooked First Thought Best Thought since ummmm it came out I suppose, but suddenly 'Instrumentals Vol. 1' is the loveliest thing ever.
― Fanois och Alexander (Merdeyeux), Monday, 10 June 2013 09:30 (twelve years ago)
dunno how it never struck me before, it sounds like Maher Shalal Hash Baz, that should have made it an immediate hit for me.
― Fanois och Alexander (Merdeyeux), Monday, 10 June 2013 09:33 (twelve years ago)
Yeah it totally sounds like MSHB, it's one of my favourite things by AR.
― high inerja (seandalai), Monday, 10 June 2013 10:32 (twelve years ago)
I wonder if there's still any hope for Audika's planned release (from nearing a decade ago now--yikes!) of the 'World of Echo' demos. . . calling Mr. Knutson!
― Soundslike, Monday, 10 June 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)
Really wish I could hear the 15:49 minute New Shoes Part I & II version of Tell You Today.
― Rotating prince game (I am using your worlds), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 04:39 (twelve years ago)
It seems so counter-intuitive (though I assume it's due to perfectly typical label rights issues) that notwithstanding all AR retrospectivizing going on in the past 10 years it's still very hard to obtain the long versions of "Kiss me Again" and "Tell You Today".
― Tim F, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 04:47 (twelve years ago)
Always get my hopes up for a moment when I see this thread has been bumped, that Steve at Audika is going to issue something else. 'Love Is Overtaking Me' was so damned good. And there was talk oh, I guess a decade ago, of releasing 'World of Echo' demos, which would basically make my year. . .
― Soundslike, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 04:55 (twelve years ago)
The Soul Jazz compilation was my introduction to him. I love all the Audika stuff but "World of..." is better for his disco tracks. Would love a volume 2 collecting some more of the unavailable single tracks.

Another Thought has been given a recent vinyl issue with some 'subtle' remastering apparently.
― MaresNest, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 09:28 (twelve years ago)
was wanting to get that... has there been any talk about the remastering?

I haven't read any critical mentions yet, to be truthful the whole thing could do with an outright but subtle remix when I hear the noise gate cutting the vocals in and out on Home Away From Home it kinda makes me wince.
― MaresNest, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)
that's fantastic xp

noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! "home away from home" is maybe my favourite arthur russell song which possibly makes it my all time favourite track by anyone ever. nothing about this track needs a remix (that noise gate is an intrinsic part of the character of it). if anyone ever tried to remix it i think i'd make it my life's mission to track them down and shout abuse at them until my time on this planet was up.
