CHALLENGING!

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

I saw them on Landsdowne St when they toured for Stakes Is High. That show was FANTASTIC.

i was there!

stakes is good but its got this really kind of unsatisfying stilted calculating feel - its when they started sounding like uh oh maybe we shouldve gone to college instead of fucking w/this shit

jhøshea, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

also no prince paul :(

jhøshea, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

nah for me stakes is when they actually start to feel like real people i know instead of just goofy improv comedy dudes making weird rap

and what, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

not to diminish how dope the first 3 de la records are but for real stakes is raw

and what, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

yah and that was sort of the whole idea of it - to bring it down to a human level - but a lot of their brilliance came w/being just out there - regardless of weather or not they were comfortable w/that anymore

jhøshea, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

one thing that sure suks abt it is common

jhøshea, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

I saw De La & Common perform "Tha Bizness" together a few years back. Dope.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

jhøshea, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

I never thought I'd see the day BR&L gets praised like this.

jhøshea on a pile of money about Stakes, but can't back this revisionist idea of Common as a devil because of his latter day Badu mindstate/pants.

Resurrection for fucking all time.

PappaWheelie V, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, Stakes was where I got off the De La bus. Sold it back years ago haven't heard it since, maybe I'd like it now. At the time I was very disappointed by the lack of Prince Paul. imho the best of theirs is probably is Dead or BMS for me, too bad the vinyl copy I have of is Dead is the WORST FUCKING RECORD PRESSING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE. They songs are actually chopped short!

It's been a pretty good decade for these guys!

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)

The Art Official Inteligence albums are good - Mosaic Thump is the better one (nice trick making the skits a showcase for dope freestyles), but Bionix at least has two great tracks, sampling Gainsbourg and Carl Tjader. The Grind Date is way more quality, tho - it's about as fun and exciting as a conscious rap release could get this decade. A lot of really cool beats, great guest spots (Ghostface, Flava Flav)...them doing "Much More" on Dave Chapelle is like one of my all-time fave popcult moments. Even the cover booklet is great (it has this calendar-style gimmick.) They've become pretty good producers, too, and this Supa Dave West guy they've got doing most of the beats on recent albums is a talent.

It's funny, I'm a big fan but I hardly ever listen to what they're rhyming about tbh.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

I've only heard 3 and 2, but 3 > 2, so I'm tempted to try 4 next rather than 1.

o. nate, Friday, 7 August 2009 16:36 (sixteen years ago)

The Grind Date is one of my favorite albums o fthe decade.

herbie mann on some gully shit (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:09 (fourteen years ago)

The first two albums:

"3 feet high" had lots of 'darker' moments, but everyone noticed the 'daisy' stuff.

"DLS is Dead" had lots of light/daisy moments as well, but people were expecting those but got 'surprised' by the darker stuff this time.

They are both great albums.
