i don't think it does at all, i think she pulls off her wackiness without getting too latter-day outkasty on us. kelis is a good comparison. tiff evans and lil' mama (and keke palmer) are totally difft cuz they get to pass their wackiness off as just "aww kidz".

'sandcastle disco' and 'champagnechronicnightcap' are both loads better than 'i decided'

also a lot lot lot less "interesting and weird" or "INTERESTING AND WEIRD"

Retro girl pop is one of the biggest musical trends of the moment tho (Winehouse, Duffy, etc)

I wouldn't seek out the rest of the album based on "I Decided", which succeeds for me as a music video but totally falls over as a song. It doesn't hit hard enough to trigger my stomp buttons and it isn't smooth enough to hit my suave buttons. *shrug*

In some ways I feel like Solange has been doomed by Beyonce's runaway success because she isn't a completely different animal from her in the same way that Ashlee and Jessica Simpson are completely different; comparisons between the two of them are going to hold more water because their voices are too similar (Solange having the light, wispy version of Beyonce's voice).

part 1 just clicked for me (watching MTV hits, of course). the freemasons mix had all the subtlety of a 9mm, which is why i loved it on first listen, but i finally "get it" and i am so thrilled

On a side note Baby Daniel (Solange's little 'un) has some kind of weird internet rep as being a weed pusher (?! I didn't start that) and Solange is his weed holder and apparently he will readily cut a bitch for looking at him sideways or disrespecting his momma so peoples lets be kind about this album.

i like the album a lot, though i went back and forth on it for ages. weird that 'wanna go back' didn't seem to make the final cut.

Well, of the two new albums I've heard today, I quite like this one, whereas Bloc Party's is fairly shit.

The retro vibe works, and there are a handful of GREAT songs (Sandcastle Disco, Would've Been the One, I Decided). My attention started to drift in the middle, but repeated listens might change that.

This album totally appeals to my intellectual backpacking coffee shop digital kid sensibilites. I love it.

still not feeling the whole album, but some of these songs are so genuinely weird. 'this bird' starts off with that alien boc sample & there's a bit in the ending that is so totally minnie ripperton circa 'adventures in paradise'. also love the countryish "it's not over yet" outro. all of this, framed with this weirdly displaced r&b edge.

also, 'i decided' is absolutely not emblematic of the whole album's sound.

the rhythm/cadences on 'would've been the one' are so unusual. so are the chord progressions.

This shit is great. And I am still struggling to hear all the indie pop and techno everyone was talking about last month up above. That's like calling She Wants Revenge trends post-punk

i was more surprised at how straight she played the album! though possibly her kookiness made me expect/fear something really eccentric/'wacky'. i mean the album is mostly just motown throwbacks and minnie ripertonisms until she starts veering off on techno tangents and songs about weed at the end. it's pretty impressive how she pulls off both the trad and the out-there, though, and most of the songs really hold up - apart from the obviously great tracks, '6 o'clock blues' and 't.o.n.y.' are sleepers.
