sung playfully, not tortured:

what song is this?

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

this is sublime. it's like the instruments are disintegrating and reforming, morphing into something else, human voices almost. it's nearly synaesthetic and i rarely get that nuance from music.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

@ confounded: forgot to type the title - it's "Get Around To It". can be found on Calling Out of Context.

willem (willem), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

you know I never really listened to the World of Arthur Russell and now I realize, the version of Let's Go Swimming is not my favorite. The version that is on Disco Not Disco 2, that I also have on (cough)my copy of the 12" kicks much ass and if anyone has Disco Not Disco 2 on CD, they should YSI right away for those out there who only have World of...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

judging by the length of the track, you're talking about Walter Gibbons' Coastal Dub. (the only one of the 12" dubs I don't have :-()

willem (willem), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

i have to say that i look forward to a book about arthur russell with some trepidation.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah I just checked...It's the Coastal Dub that totally kicks my ass. The first moment I heard that song I was just floored.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Polmo Polpo - Kiss ME Again and Again here. It's good.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

7" Pop Your Funk fucking mad! Not much like the 'known' vers. Thanks for the upload.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Ok. Interview's finished -- all 7 pages (MS Word, single spaced) and I need a drink. Thing's damn good, though. How should I go about putting this where people can get to it? Will I get a thrashing if I paste it on this thread?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Start a new thread and put only that on. Then link to it from this thread!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Here it is!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

shit - i'll have to wait till monday to get those. oh swoon -i think it just follows that he was a perv...seems like someone so full of life - really tuned in atleast ... just that amazing awareness of organic things, patterns and beauty yet wanting to take it further and make it all sexy and discofied ....mmmmmmmm. And definitely a lot of tenderness and sensuality coming out in his voice and lyrics.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 20 August 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Beta, is that 7" Pop Your Funk from this? http://www.tigersushi.com/site/frameset.jsp?page=Art.jsp&ArtId=3706

Thanks to everyone who uploaded tracks - the Russell discography is immensee ...

Brakhage, Saturday, 20 August 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

re: his voice - i always heard it as a gentler vers of john martyn rather thatn the oft cited nick drake comparison. things like small hours off of one world have that same hazy playful introverted singing to my self feel. and the music slurs dreamily in a way drake never did.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 20 August 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

also obv dubspace and echoplex.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 20 August 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

he's never felt like nick drake to me either. i mean i can see why people compare them, but to me nick drakes voice is otherworldly and cold and a.r.'s is completly the opposite

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 20 August 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

ok heres the other side of the felix track click

credited to nicky siano, produced by killer whale. i never dloaded the tiger stripes link above but on my 12 i think it turns into this halfwat through.

is that arthur singing bad lil kitten?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 20 August 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

All you YSI posters are Stars!!

Hmmm, you're right, but singing like a tortured poet and living like a dog in heat seem like polar opposites in sentimentality to me.

-- Confounded, August 19th, 2005

Polar opposites?? More like mutually reinforcing characteristics!

LRJP! (LRJP!), Saturday, 20 August 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

i guess so. having read that it was reminiscent of Merzbow, i begged Mr. Audika for a rip of it. i'm with Dan though, in that the most crucial (re: the ones that will convert you) Arthur disco trax are to be found only on the Disco Not Disco comps, not World of. think i slightly grumble about that here: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/r/russell_arthur/world-of.shtml

b8a, Saturday, 20 August 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

thanks so much for the 'pop your funk' 7" YSI. i had so wanted to hear that for so long. out there!!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

someone requested on the ysi-thread, but i guess it's not out of place on this thread: Dinosaur - Kiss Me Again 12"

willem (willem), Sunday, 21 August 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

Thanks willem. Listening to this I found out that the Kiss Me Again on the Disco Not Disco comp is actually the b-side version.

Brakhage (brakhage), Sunday, 21 August 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

sorta...there's 2 Kiss Me Again 12"s. They both have the same 12 minute version on the a side, one has the 6 minute version on the b side, that's the edit that's on Disco Not Disco, the other version has a 13 or so minute dub mix which sounds more like the 12 minute version then the edit. I think the one featuring the edit is clear red vinyl. I used to have both but gave the one with the edit to a very deserving friend seeing as how I have the edit on Disco Not Disco, and he'd given my RIS's Love and Music, an even more expensive 12".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for clearing that up Dan!

Brakhage (brakhage), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

no problem, I just downloaded what Willem kindly posted, which is the 12 min and a side with the "version" flipside, Great stuff. The 6 minute edit version is easier to find but I just tried to upload it here:

http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0ZEPZVUO4B0VJ0TM2RV74MEMYI

hope that works

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 21 August 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Dan, much obliged

Brakhage (brakhage), Sunday, 21 August 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

What a feast these past few days! I'm gonna make a CD-R w/all these on and bliss out.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Sunday, 21 August 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Played "Song IV" on my radio show Friday night. I think it might've lost some of the micro-dub detail over the airwaves, but it was fun, anyway. Thanks!

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 21 August 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

hey, did anyone else notice this on the audika site?

Springfield is the title of a long lost Arthur Russell Electro/Club track that has remained unheard until now, and it’s an absolutely mind boggling, classic dance track!!! Arthur recorded close to four hours of music with the intention of having someone complete and remix the composition. As all of Arthur’s dance music was done in collaboration, we were committed to finding the best. We are excited to announce that our friends the DFA will be handling the chores of mixing and editing the track for release also in October.

*head explodes*

haitch (haitch), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

not sure this is done just yet but it is true...

Beta (abeta), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

hi, i found a compilation on slsk calling itself "arthur on the floor", containing these tracks:

Treehouse/Schoolbell [Walter Gibbons mix] 10:12
Treehouse/Schoolbell [Arthur Russell mix.1] 6:54
Treehouse/Schoolbell [Arthur Russell mix.2] 3:23
Let's Go Swimming [Walter Gibbons Coastal dub] 7:50
Let's Go Swimming [Gulf Stream dub] 5:18
Let's Go Swimming [Puppy Surf mix] 5:21
Wax the Van [Kenny's club version] 5:30
Wax the Van [Cherry's Club] 5:38
Wax the Van [radio edit] 4:00
Wax the Van [Jon's dub] 7:12
Go Bang! 5:37
Is it All Over My Face? [Larry Levan mix] 6:56

can't find out much from google; i was wondering if anyone here knows if this saw a proper release, or if it's just someone's homemade digitization of the twelve-inches. any help is much appreciated.

rmd (dj gauge transformation), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

definately not an official release.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

damn. i was holding out a faint hope of getting my hands on a copy. oh well. thanks for your help though.

rmd (dj gauge transformation), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

There must be multiple releases of Wax the Van because my 12" only has 2 cuts.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

it would be nice to hear version beyond whats on World of Arthur Russell - i've thought was kind of crappy

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

well, here's the comp i was asking about. sorry if it's too big.

rmd (dj gauge transformation), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realize 'til now that the above "Arthur on the floor" track listing was something definitively/broadly disseminated, having just got it given to me by a friend when I was starting to become consumed by Arthur. I can't recommend listening to all the "Schoolbell/Treehouse" and "Let's Go Swimming" mixes as one murky chunk highly enough, though. I love how each mix is a little continuation of the other; it's a great intro to his work.

Craig Dunsmuir, Monday, 22 August 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Also, in case no one noticed it, there's a lovely Arthur mix on the "heart" page of Audika's site right now, from a tribute to him on his 51st birthday recently. Mostly released tracks mixed with sounds of the sea, but definitely a couple ('World of Echo'-style) tracks I haven't heard before in the mix.

I.M. (I.M.), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

who's gonna pust the Loft box-set version of Is It All Over My Face in all it's hippie jam glory?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

i had no idea the one on the loft box set was another version. i had always just assumed it was the 12" version and thus have never even played it! i shall look it out tomorrow.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

it's uploading now. i love that version about 100x more than the original.

xp

jed_ (jed), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

There's a Loft Box set !!???

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

stir...oh man dude no way! It's a totally different like, demo version, sounds more like some hippie band drum circle then a raw disco track. On another note, I'm about to revive a Renegade Soundwave thread to ask some questions, so please look for that...

walter...

xxp again

jed_ (jed), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Not really "box-sets" in the usual sense (just double CDs with a cardboard sleeve). That said, the music is perfect, and the design is beautiful.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

is it all over my face 11:55"

xp

the vinyls are boxed.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh ok. I was picturing (hoping for) some kind of 10 disc epic thing.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

xpost - Ah! I get it.
