Yeah, but it's like better than Thriller, though, really.

the jel (the jel), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the album might have had the potential to be better than _Thriller_ if the singing wasn't completely loathsome and wrong.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a lot of the same criticisms of JT as James does, but that doesn't get in the way of me enjoying the album.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

THOM YORKE!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind JT as a pop star. Added to the flawless singles, mesmerizing production, he also seems like a fun interview. You can't claim he's a totally maunfactured, faceless pop star because his performances (Michael Jacksonisms) communicate the fact that he's a genuine music fan.

theodre fogelsanger, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Some singers can get swathed enough in a record that if they're bleah enough one can still enjoy (this is what I kept telling myself when I was listening to the Mission a lot). JT does not have this advantage.

he's a genuine music fan

Argh. I would hate him still if he came up to me and said "I listen to music even in my sleep thanks to electrodes."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Thom Yorke - *groan*. I guess it would be more interesting than Hail to the Thief which I turned off halfway through because it was putting me to sleep...

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

You people need to get with the program. "Last Night" was the best song of 2002.

ryan, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh, please tell me you aren't talking about that plodfest-on-speed by The Strokes...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, good lord no!

ryan, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

LAAAAAAST niiiight she saaaaaaid...something something something. Never mind.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Thom Yorke singing those songs = even worse than Thom Yorke singing his own songs!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

plodfest-on-speed

I am going to use this term if I can. (It's actually the only Strokes song I can stand.)

You people need to get with the program.

Only if you get with mine -- and since you're not obligated, the reverse need not happen either. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

(I knew it was a matter of time before Ned and Dan hijacked this thread.)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

You freakin' INVOKED us! That upped the chances considerably! And anyway the vision of Thom Yorke's Justified completely validates Dan's hijacking. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I have watched the videos and his voice is fine (to these untrained years) (the falsettos make me laugh, leave it at that).

I won't be buying it bcz I find all chart pop unlistenable once it gets to my stereo.

Thom yorke should definetely sing this stuff. it might cheer that fucker up (here's hoping anyway).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

no, invoking involves saying your names each three times. I'm only on two so far, w/no more planned--the damage is done, so I guess I'll be leaving (hint, hint)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

No wonder Mr. Matos always gets that catch in his voice when talking about Britney.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Britney has brown hair.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The truly scary thing is when you start hearing those lyrics and connecting them with what you read in the Enquirer about Ben Affleck and Britney...

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

No no, it's better to think about La Brit and Fred Durst.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, he Becomes a Woman a lot on that album: my favorite thing is still the bit of "Senorita" where he does the call-and-response part for the ladies.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

that call-and-response thing is fucking incredible, yes.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, he Becomes a Woman a lot on that album:

Ew, Justin Timberlake menses.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh right, everyone thinks it's funny when Eminem gets his period...

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"Cleaning Out My Closet" = worst euphemism yet?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem's got mad flow

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ENOUGH OF THE PERIOD JOKES ALREADY!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

big time ditto nabisco and matos on the senorita c+r.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I at least point out the sheer horror of Ned making the "closet" joke? Closets are really big, dude.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway.. I mean, Justin Timberlake can't sing. He doesn't play any of the instruments. The songs aren't written by him. And he hasn't produced either.

What the heck is he doing on the album?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

and i know i'm coming in late to this, but tho i don't have as strong a reaction to it as Dan & Ned do, I find the song pretty boring - JT IS a bad singer and his 'skills' or lack therof are not utilised in an interesting way

overall reactions - blah & blech

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

And, really, I am not speaking of the music in this case. The only thing I have heard from that album is "Cry My a River", which is kind of cool and actually surprisingly good to come from a combination of an ex-boyband member and a team of R&B producers.

My main problem about the album is that I cannot quite see exactly what Justin Timberlake has contributed, other than borrowing his voice to Timbaland's Autotune. So then, why is the album credited to Justin Timberlake?

I think the answer is pretty obvious btw: He is good-looking and a lot of teenage girls have the hots for him.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

so? you don't like pop music geir?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Beatles=pop music

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

o, i forgot.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir, why the hell do you care what Timberlake contributed? If you buy the record, Timbaland and the Neptunes get royalties too, right? So who cares? Do you refuse to watch television because "Sony" didn't actually assemble your set, it was actually some guy at a factory?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, considering who has actually done most of the creative work on the album, Timberlake should at least change his name to Timbalake, just as a tribute. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Next time around, he moves on to another production team, and people will still buy the record, no matter how crap it is. Because they think that the fact that it is supposed to be a Justin Timberlake album matters at all.

I mean, I think songwriters are generally discredited and underrated. Elvis Presley was also overrated, but he could at least sing. Justin Timberlake cannot even sing. So then, why is he releasing records?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

he is good looking and a lot of teenage girls/boys have the hots for him. (not to mention 20something/30something/40something boys and girls)

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

In other words, he should have been a model instead.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Of 13 tracks, I think the Neptunes have production/songwriting credit on 5-6 tops, Timbaland has 2-3, the rest are from various others, Brian McKnight etc. And in your rush to tedious, hackneyed puppet theories, you really shouldn't underestimate the efforts of the entire team on this, either. There are multitudes behind the scenes!

Now, what's driving me nuts is that I can't get hold of a full version of the Puffy-produced track Love Don't Love Me, which was left off the ablum and sounds totally badass in the snippets I have been able to find.

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, the Timbalake crack was kind of funny.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

geir, maybe when someone says that they like the justin timberlake album you should presume that what they mean is that when they put the album released under the name justin timberlake into their stereo they enjoy the sound that comes out, regardless of who made it...
the fact that you believe the album should be credited to someone else shouldn't make a difference to a judgement of the music, its a separate issue...

robin (robin), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

also, ben, what did it say in the national enquirer?
i'm amazed at how fucked up and creepy the video is as it is...

robin (robin), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The call and response part of "Senorita" is cute, but I'm shocked grown adults are calling it amazing (Xgau's review is so embarassingly affectionate I'd almost assume he was a chickenhawk). You ever seen the original Nutty Professor? At his worst Timberlake sounds like Buddy Love did when he started turning back into the professor. LADEEEES! OH, LADEEES!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

also, does Pharrell sing on the chorus of "Rock Your Body." I know Timbie's lip syncing all of it in the video (and it could be him) but the part about grabbing all the girls on the floor REALLY sounds like Mr. Williams. That's what I assumed when I got the album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like the brash confidence of this album epitomized by the call-and-response part that was mentioned above--it fits beautifully into the song. I don't much care what JT may or may not be like IRL as I think he's a reasonably good actor here; the personas he adapts are convincing and compelling for as long as the songs are playing.

I even like the treacly ballads, for one thing because they mean that the record is true to its models (ahem "Lady in My Life"). The new single (is it called "Rock Your Body"?) is a straight-up Off the Wall homage but there's something different about the rhythm section--figuring out what that something is has been my task in my free moments so far this week.

4mateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Although I don't quite get why people rave about that bit in Senorita (tho I love the song in general) I think it's meant to be a little tongue in cheek, or at worst, just goofy.

I don't hear Pharrell on Rock Your Body.

I can't believe I am relating this, but according to the National Enquirer (or the Star, or whoever), Ben Affleck had a brief thing with Britney in the early days of his romance with J.Lo and he told Timberlake about it. Hence, if you will, the line in the song about "I heard it from him."

Also noone has mentioned that the Basement Jaxx remixes of Like I Love You make Justin's voice sound even weirder, in a very cool way.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 24 April 2003 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

doesn't being true to your models remind the audience of the much better artists they could be listening to? Especially when you're Stevie Wonder homage contains the line "you're out of this world except you're not green."
