They very much appreciated your Herald review, Grimly!
Oh, hey, nice one! I don't feel I really did them justice in 280w -- I wish I'd talked more about the lyrics, for a start -- but I'm delighted about that.
I'd happily link to it if it seemed to be online, Cutty: our shiny new website seems to be missing, umm, a fortnight's worth of music reviews. Suffice to say it was just under 300 words of "Late to the party here but fuck me, this lot are transcendentally awesome, and you should have gone to see them too".
I'm cross about this lack of reviews online, actually. I'm going to send a cross e-mail. WOO, that'll show 'em.

Thanks for the video link, NickB -- yeah, that's pretty sharp.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 4 October 2009 14:31 (sixteen years ago)
type out the review, then.
― cutty, Sunday, 4 October 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)
Cutty actually wants Grimly to call him and read him the review.

cooler-than-i-am ppl keep saying to me "what, that band that sound like franz ferdinand"
― thomp, Monday, 7 December 2009 15:26 (sixteen years ago)
which is confusing the hell out of me tbh, did the first one sound really different to two dancers or are these people not listening with their ears
― thomp, Monday, 7 December 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)
the first one sounds even less like franz
― Jamie_ATP, Monday, 7 December 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)
no, "bulging clairvoyants" or whatever it is called has a bit of franz rock-disco-stomp to it. but that's about it.
― la monte jung (cutty), Monday, 7 December 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
easily my fave indie/rock album of the last few years. typical that the crits are all in a lather over the *new* album which seems to be the same kind of cake but with less interesting ingredients.
― piscesx, Monday, 7 December 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)
i don't think it's less interesting. it's less wacky, more subtle, and that's what makes it better.
― la monte jung (cutty), Monday, 7 December 2009 21:42 (sixteen years ago)
They're the first band I can remember that have made my album of the year two years in a row.
At first I was disappointed with Two Dancers, I missed the pomp from Limbo Panto but it's one hell of a grower.

oh pisces u moron.
anyway it's here = http://drownedinsound.com/news/4139319-watch--wild-beasts-kcrw-sessiona 7 song KCRW session live on film. turns out they're bloody brilliant live. also some excellent chatter between songs which has made me love them *even* more.
― piscesx, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:17 (sixteen years ago)
saw them again when they were in brooklyn last week. they played two dancers i and ii. and they are still fucking brilliant.
love watching them pluck their guitars. so much sound coming out of the four of them live.
― shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:22 (sixteen years ago)
glad you saw both two dancers!
i'll have to watch that session. they seemed like really nice guys when i saw them; it was a small but extremely enthusiastic crowd and it seemed like they were genuinely surprised and grateful.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:24 (sixteen years ago)
they dress funny
― shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:28 (sixteen years ago)
yeah they have weird haircuts too--i was like are these guys gonna be pretentious but then they were really sweet
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:29 (sixteen years ago)
mother fuck.
just idly checked into these guys' tour schedule, apparently they played mpls a month ago.
― goole, Friday, 12 March 2010 17:09 (sixteen years ago)
getting dragged to these guys tomorrow night so i figured id check out the album (from what id heard it sounded like something id not really be into, but what i heard really was wrong)
― plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:46 (sixteen years ago)
yr gonna like it
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

― goole, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:49 (sixteen years ago)
so are they kickass live then?
― plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)
see me, about a month ago, in this thread
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:55 (sixteen years ago)
you really just say that they have weird haircuts and that they play both versions of the same song(?)
― plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:58 (sixteen years ago)
thats not the same song
― shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

― plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:01 (sixteen years ago)
well that was fuckin' awesome.well that was fuckin' awesome.well that was fuckin' awesome.well that was fuckin' awesome.well that was fuckin' awesome.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:01 (sixteen years ago)
so they're kinda like the chameleons?
― plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:05 (sixteen years ago)
anyway i like their sound, its kinda noirish, detailed but not busy, widescreen but not pompous, and shit can dude sing really, or is their two singers (cos that is range otherwise)
― plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:06 (sixteen years ago)
imagine the smiths doing a bunch of talking heads pastiches, if morrissey's voice were an octave higher. maybe.
there are two singers but i can't work out which is which!
― goole, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:07 (sixteen years ago)
really?
― shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:08 (sixteen years ago)
it's pretty obvious? there is the falsetto guy then the deeper voice
the falsetto sounds like... the falsetto of the deeper voice. i just figured the guy had range. *shrugs*
― goole, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:09 (sixteen years ago)
wait on two dancers ii you can hear them at the same time, kinda dont like the falsetto guy
― plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:09 (sixteen years ago)
¡omg!
― plax (ico), Saturday, 27 March 2010 11:43 (sixteen years ago)
Sadly they are not like The Chameleons.
I've been enjoying 'Wild Beasts' a lot recently though and I'm surprised there's been so little talk of it on ILM. It's an interesting album that definitely rewards repeated listens. At first I thought a lot of the songs ended quite prematurely without really building into anything but the more I've listened the more I've appreciated the restrained economy at play. The album sounds lush in terms of atmosphere. I know its maybe only a matter of them being contemporaries but I hear a lot of similarities to the sound of the XX LP. They're playing Primavera this summer and after watching some live performances on YouTube I'm keen to check them out. The earlier remarks about the drums being far more prominent live seem to be the case. It's a shame the drums on the album lack a bit of the punch they seem to have live. Still, good stuff I say. Took my ears a while to warm to the vocals though.
― AnotherDeadHero, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 17:57 (sixteen years ago)
Nope, but they share a certain vibe with The Associates.
ILM's gusto for these guys is well-placed, I picked up their two albums and there's a few songs that grabbed me immediately but others were slow burns but the hooks stayed in my head. Well done!
