Could somebody recommend me some vintage 80s jangle-rock (besides REM)?

This is exactly what I'm looking for. How about Green On Red? Were they any good? The few songs I heard by them left me underwhelmed.

How about The Reivers?

Right now, my favorite band is the Vulgar Boatmen, so anything like that would be appreciated.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

i used to luv green on red...and they used an eggleston photo on one of their covers

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Bob Mould's solo record "Workbook" is pretty jangly.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Second the Connells; throw in "Fun and Games," too, but discard everything thereafter.

FELT!

if you love the Vulgar Boatmen (as everyone should) get the Silos first three albums (About Her Steps, Cuba (!), s/t). Cuba being the masterpiece. Really, get that right now. You'll love it.

Also, Michael Hall. But especially get this The Setters, which is Walter Salas-Humara (Silos), Michael Hall, and Alejandro Escovedo.

also, The Schramms, early Yo La Tengo member Dave Schramm's band. if you can get past his vocals, that is.

Another vote for the Connells - there first three albums, Darker Days, Boylan Heights, and Fun and Games are essential.

Also check out Let's Active, the dBs, Guadalcanal Diary, and Miracle Legion.

John Hunter, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Whoops . . . meant to type "their" first three albums.

John Hunter, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

no mention of Pylon yet?

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

This is great, I'm going to be jangling for the next few months.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

The Three O'clock wee known to jangle on occasion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Even Tom Petty was known to jangle on call. "The Waiting"?

The Nightingales

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

A very few tracks by The Upbeats (aka The Beats) would work, and Pete Buck plays on some of them. But, they were one of the most maddeningly incoherently inconsistent bands I've ever heard. Look for the Buck-assisted track Just Another Pop Song.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

How about The Reivers?

Fucking excellent stuff!

Look also for The Dangtrippers.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Or are The Smiths too obvious?

Melinda Mess-injure, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

For Against were a bit jangly. Connells fourthed, dB's seconded, Let's Active thirded.

Ian Riese-Moraine: the crown prince of understatement. (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Last I checked, For Against were STILL jangly.

JAS, Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Might as well add Big Star. Their 70s jangle didn't get heard much until the 80s.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Monday, 1 August 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

McCarthy had some good jangly moments, amidst all that heavy left-with sermonising, as did The Beloved before they went house.

(left-with = left-wing..... time for coffee)

stevo (stevo), Monday, 1 August 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone mention Polaris yet?

If not then I'm going to YSI their whole album

Voodoo Child, Monday, 1 August 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

Cretins. It's hard to believe Tom Petty was mentioned in only one line in this thread. Petty & the Heartbreakers -owned- "jangle" in the 80's and 90's. The first CD in his career span box set was called "The Big Jangle." One of the big Tom Petty stories is that Roger McGuinn heard "American Girl" on the radio and said to one of his buddies something to the order of "when did I do that?"

Wygals, The Embarrassment, The Connells, Guadalcanal Diary -- yeah, keep on rockin.'

Los Lobos and the Meat Puppets -- it's hard to find bands that don't jangle less unless you're in the heavy metal or punk rock genres. oh wait... Ha ha.

George Smith, Monday, 1 August 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

man, one of my favorite hometown bands, Primitons, got a small reissue a couple of years back, I know TWAS was a fan as well:

chuck warner put out the first primitons EP so it is everywhere around here.

scott seward, Friday, 19 January 2018 19:09 (eight years ago)

we are throbbing lobster-heavy in western mass.

scott seward, Friday, 19 January 2018 19:10 (eight years ago)

Primitons and The Ho-Ho Men were both descendants of Jim Bob And The Leisure Suits, though I don't remember how well any of them would fit any notion of jangle.

dow, Friday, 19 January 2018 19:14 (eight years ago)

well the ep was produced by Mitch Easter, which is like definition of jangle, right? haha.
this is a fun thread.

campreverb, Friday, 19 January 2018 22:47 (eight years ago)

two years pass...

like a lot of these comps it's certainly not all essential stuff but there's some good stuff

Seconded or thirded.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 5 December 2020 03:04 (five years ago)

IMO their earlier Indiana-only post-Gizmos iteration Right To Left is even better:

https://musicalfamilytree.com/band/right_to_left

(6-track studio recording not on Discogs or released aside from demo tape, which kills me)

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Saturday, 5 December 2020 03:05 (five years ago)

Also no mention of the Field Mice or any of Bobby Wratten's other endeavours yet. That's being rectified right now.☺

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Saturday, 5 December 2020 03:45 (five years ago)

Had not heard of Right To Left, Field Mice, Bobby Wratten! Have just now skimmed this review of the recent Captured Tracks comp cited upthread: once past "Proustian" and some other attempts at pre-summary, there are appealing descriptions of tracks, which range from shiny happy people to shadow patrols, apparently:https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/various-artists-strum-and-thrum-the-american-jangle-underground-1983-1987/

dow, Saturday, 5 December 2020 04:36 (five years ago)

This is the "pitchfork sucks" topic, so I feel like it's okay to admit that I (Andy, to be certain) have actually liked some of their features and their twee one is kind of a classic, as far as I'm concerned: https://pitchfork.com/features/article/6176-twee-as-fuck

(It's Nitsuh, so of course it's great.)

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Saturday, 5 December 2020 04:52 (five years ago)

Sorry, that should read this is NOT the "pitchfork sucks" topic.

covidsbundlertanze op. 6 (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 5 December 2020 05:17 (five years ago)

this is a good comp ... the R.E.M. imitation is sometimes fierce, but it sounds fine now

There are some great recommendations and discoveries on this thread. How did the Vulgar Boatmen pass me by? I second The Hummingbirds, a fantastic band - so sad that Simon Holmes is no longer with us.

Wow, wow, wow.

I used to have the mp3's of this Brazilian band. So excellent, you have to hear it:

Co-pay Segundo (Craig D.), Monday, 18 January 2021 19:33 (five years ago)

Yeah I posted the live version, whereas the album is a classic indie 80s sound, love the guitar and unadorned sound...now I gotta go back and revisit the rest of that Brazilian "new wave" that was on that comp.
