Wu Tang Clan: C/D?

I'm going with classic for their early work (dark beats, brilliant raps) and less enthusiasm for the later stuff. Opine at will...

John S., Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they are great, don't deny yourself. like what you like and realize that conceptually no group has ever stepped to the game like they have/had/are/will

Steve K, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, we've had plenty we threads before, but i was thinking of picking up Iron Flag today (after tim reminded me of on his latest skykicking entry). the first lp excellent, but its the liquid swords - cuban linx where they hit the top spot, theres been some treading water since then, but what i've heard of Iron Flag seems pretty defiant

winter warz is, like, the best thing ever

gareth, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My work is done here.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

IRON FLAG is a great return to form, very tight and not as sprawling as THE W.

Matt Riedl (veal), Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's what everyone said about The W in relation to Wu-Tang Forever.

The Wu have become a "best album since" act. Not too many hip-hoppers get to that point.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For a collective who've released at least two albums a year, singly and as a group, for a decade or so, I think we're too harsh on the misfires. What other gang of people put out anywhere near that much great stuff during the '90s? What individual was responsible for more great music in the decade than the RZA? It sometimes seems that people are far more interested in slagging off the rubbish parts of Forever (which has LOTS OF TERRIFIC STUFF TOO!) than talking about 36 Chambers and Liquid Swords and Cuban Linx and loads of other greatness. All-time classic!

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Forever has some absolute classics: Triumph, Bellz of War, For heaven's sake, and especially Reunited...it does get knocked around too much. As has been said elsewhere, practically every double album has some filler.

John S., Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

classic classic classic. of course 36 chambers, swords, linx, but ghostface's supreme clientel is great as well

brains, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And don't forget ODB's Return...

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think people are too quick to dismiss some of the solo records because they aren't 36 chambers. method man's 'judgement day' has way too many skits, but songs like 'torture', 'suspect chin music', 'breakups 2 makeups'... gold. same with ODB's 'Nigga Please'. so it isn't 'return' - so what, when you have drunken brilliance like 'dirt dog'.

Dave M., Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To me it's all about the RZA, and The W is his best work - sprawling in the sense that he had way too many good ideas for one album. Only Ghost is consistently brilliant in having something to say and getting it across, although ODB, Method, well everyone's had their moments.

B-Rad, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have trouble listening to Wu's early work now. It's just too emaciated and deliberately crappy sounding (too much weed, basically) especially compared to amazing crispness of Iron Flag (if the Clan have switched from hash cookies to guarana as their pick-me-up of choice I'm not going to complain). Even Supreme Clientele, which I love, sounds a bit drab in places in comparison, but I'm sure that'll pass once I've stopped being excited over Iron Flag.

That said, when I did listen to early Wu-related stuff all the time, my first and biggest love was Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx.

Tim, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cuban linx definitely still holds up today... it's a really rich record. wu-tang? absolutely classic.

minna, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As a Wu-tang fan, I would definitely not call "the W" sprawling. It I think it's the shortest group album.

Trey Bien, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic. But later is generally better than earlier. Of course, early WT was so incredible within the genre context of the time.

I'd really be surprised if anybody would ever put "36 Chambers" in the "dud" category. The meat of the debate on ilx is the debate over whether Iron Flag is any good or not, as well as Forever. and it looks like this thread is missing that.

To thread: two people with differing opinions on Iron Flag.

;_;

I ask Icelene for a memory of her husband, one that comes to mind more than any other. She answers quickly.

“I think back to when we were young. We had to walk past this building, Building 5, and that’s where all the Gods and Earths were. They were men and women that were studying in the Nation of Islam, that knew their lessons. And when we walked past them, he made sure he knew his — how much the planet weighs, how far we are from the moon — and it made him feel great. Because you had to be a positive person — you couldn’t smoke, drink, nothing like that — to walk past them with your head up high. He taught me from a young girl how to respect myself. And he didn’t speak like no other guy that I knew. So I just fell in love with him.”

Little Nicky Pizza loved that rascal Rust (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 20 March 2014 21:16 (twelve years ago)

He would eventually come back to the Wu. On Ghostface’s excellent reunification cut “9 Milli Bros,” Capp steals the show with a nod to the bad old days: “Diggler, a.k.a. the cab driver / Drop you off in the middle of fire.”

:)

It’s impossible not to wonder what could have been. But that thought should be trumped by what was — that this even happened at all.
