well, we've had plenty we threads before, but i was thinking of picking up Iron Flag today (after tim reminded me of on his latest skykicking entry). the first lp excellent, but its the liquid swords - cuban linx where they hit the top spot, theres been some treading water since then, but what i've heard of Iron Flag seems pretty defiant

The Wu have become a "best album since" act. Not too many hip-hoppers get to that point.

For a collective who've released at least two albums a year, singly and as a group, for a decade or so, I think we're too harsh on the misfires. What other gang of people put out anywhere near that much great stuff during the '90s? What individual was responsible for more great music in the decade than the RZA? It sometimes seems that people are far more interested in slagging off the rubbish parts of Forever (which has LOTS OF TERRIFIC STUFF TOO!) than talking about 36 Chambers and Liquid Swords and Cuban Linx and loads of other greatness. All-time classic!

Forever has some absolute classics: Triumph, Bellz of War, For heaven's sake, and especially Reunited...it does get knocked around too much. As has been said elsewhere, practically every double album has some filler.

i think people are too quick to dismiss some of the solo records because they aren't 36 chambers. method man's 'judgement day' has way too many skits, but songs like 'torture', 'suspect chin music', 'breakups 2 makeups'... gold. same with ODB's 'Nigga Please'. so it isn't 'return' - so what, when you have drunken brilliance like 'dirt dog'.

To me it's all about the RZA, and The W is his best work - sprawling in the sense that he had way too many good ideas for one album. Only Ghost is consistently brilliant in having something to say and getting it across, although ODB, Method, well everyone's had their moments.

I have trouble listening to Wu's early work now. It's just too emaciated and deliberately crappy sounding (too much weed, basically) especially compared to amazing crispness of Iron Flag (if the Clan have switched from hash cookies to guarana as their pick-me-up of choice I'm not going to complain). Even Supreme Clientele, which I love, sounds a bit drab in places in comparison, but I'm sure that'll pass once I've stopped being excited over Iron Flag.

That said, when I did listen to early Wu-related stuff all the time, my first and biggest love was Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx.

I'd really be surprised if anybody would ever put "36 Chambers" in the "dud" category. The meat of the debate on ilx is the debate over whether Iron Flag is any good or not, as well as Forever. and it looks like this thread is missing that.
