I think I'd have to go for "Killer In The Home" because it's simultaneously languid and menacing. There are others I'd consider, though.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Stand & Deliver!'

DV, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Christian Dior". I've got a fetish and that means I'm sick. So very sick.

Arthur, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Phew, another 'too many choices' -- *mentally rolls 20-sided die* -- for now, "Press Darlings."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Goody Two Shoes," partly because of its drums-and-horns-and-nothing- else party vibe, partly because it gave geeky quasi-straightedge youth like me license to be total pervs.

Douglas, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Prince Charming - mmmmm those dandy highwayman clothes. Try doin' the dance, you'll piss yerselves laughing

Rhia, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Strip.

Chris, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Day I Met God"

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Something Girls" tickles my fancy most at the moment.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Dog Eat Dog" is THE quintessential A&A...

Joe, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Dirty Vicar preaches righteously - it's "Stand And Deliver". It's "Stand And Deliver" for the lyrics alone. It's "Stand And Deliver" for the intro alone. It's "Stand And Deliver" for the video alone. It's "Stand And Deliver" for the chorus alone. It's "Stand And Deliver" for the coda-gibberish alone.

Tom, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Beat My Guest" - punky & kinky S&M song, saw him live in 95 playin this on his "comeback" tour which thankfully concentrated on his early material

tacit, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm the dandy highwayman that you're too scared to mention, I spend my cash on looking flash and grabbing your attention...jesus christ, why would anyone say a song besides Stand and Deliver? Anyone who didn't say it is mental, even though pretty much any of 'em are good choices. But still, Stand and Deliver. HAVE YOU SEEN THAT VIDEO??? Good lord, it's better than 98% of most movies.

I like Car Trouble too but that's neither here nor there.

Ally, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
REVIVE THIS ONE TOO!

I am disappointed, in retrospect, that no one mentioned Whip in my Valise. It's not as good as Stand and Deliver - but what is? - but it's got incredible, incredible lyrics.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been taping Adam Ant videos like crazy off VH1 classic: Stand And Deliver, Prince Charming (decent Brando impersonation!), Antmusic, Little Two Shoes, Desparate But Not Serious. If videos were what artists were judged on he'd be the frikkin' Beatles.

But yeah, if I had to pick one...Stand And Deliver.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 5 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know any of this stuff, but then i'm all about the peel sessions-era ant and nothing else. so i vote 'it doesn't matter' from said peel sessions, just because songs about not liking girls based on their body odor are k-classic.

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 5 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony, you could just buy the video collection, it's like $9 at Tower. Probably cheaper at a Best Buy or something. Apparently there's not much call for it these days.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

"Family of Noise"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks for the tip, Ally! I assumed such a thing would be out of print.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

No, seriously, if I had two vcrs by which to do a dubbing operation, I'd make you a copy, but I don't have such frivolous things. It's a lot easier than waiting for the vids to come on, which I was doing for a while until Otis bought me the tape. The videos are works of art, Apollo 9 is especially ace for the cowboy hat.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Allegedly a DVD version was to surface, but plans are on hold.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

They probably shelved it to put out the Limp Bizkit anthology instead.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Doubtless.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The videos, as everything else, may be found on kazaa et. al.

POO = Stand and Deliver, no contest.

fletrejet, Saturday, 5 April 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

but what about the muuuuuuuuuuuuusic? < /rockist>

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

STAND AND DELIVER!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Reading this thread makes me very happy indeed. I saw TWO consecutive tours by the solo Mr. Ant. My brothers and their friends all painted their faces with 'native' markings. He was sublime.

That having been said, "Los Rancheros," for the ultra-subliminible "Clint. Eastwood." backing vox; "Strip" for being Nelly when Nelly was in pre-school ("We're just following ancient history / If I strip for you will you strip for me?"); "Ant Rap" for being incredibly horribly awful on one level but completely sonically and conceptually godhead on all other levels and including first French rap by a white English dude who wanted to be Native American; and "Xerox" for being one of the greatest punk-pop singles ever.

Neudonym, Sunday, 6 April 2003 07:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not as sold on the music. I've got Kings Of The Wild Fronteir and Prince Charming and it can be a chore to get through. What little I hear of the later stuff (Aside from Friend Or Foe) seems even worse. But individual songs, Antmusic, Los Rancheros, Beat My Guest, Stand And Deliver in particular, rock me soooo.

And since video is equally his artform, I have no problem acknowledging that.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Kings of the Wild Frontier is weak too. Dirk Wears White Sox (the first album) is pretty excellent start-to-finish, though.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

what does it sound like? Most reviews seem to despise it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It's like a pared-down, less-ambitious version of XTC's Black Sea, with a bit of Devo's funk and Ian Dury's sense of humor.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

sold, though that reminds me which thread I need to revive...I need to make amends for my Devo dissing...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 6 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got Kings Of The Wild Fronteir and Prince Charming and it can be a chore to get through.

Can I have your job?

Mike (mratford), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not as sold on the music.

:-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't make those poopy eyes at me, Ned. You know I'm a Greatest Hits kinda guy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Then burn ALL YOUR ALBUMS but the greatest hits. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

but Rob Sheffield said it best (in the Alternative Record Guide), Ned, the actual Adam Ant albums look a lot cooler laying around your house than Antics In The Forbidden Zone.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

plus there's no "Beat My Guest" on this!!!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:14 (twenty-three years ago)

(PS -- In a perfect and just world, Prince Charming-era Adam Ant would step forward in time a few years and cover Big Black's version of "The Model." Tell me you can't hear it.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

more Helena Bonham Carter pics! More I say!

and wow, I can. Almost as mind-blowing as James Blount's Hall'n'Oates/QOTSA revelation.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

am I the only person who thinks Sugar Ray's "Fly" could be an Adam Ant song? Maybe it needs some Burundi drumming but otherwise... the band even did a weak cover of "Stand And Deliver" on the same album as "Fly."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

am I the only person who thinks Sugar Ray's "Fly" could be an Adam Ant song?

I don't hear it. I always thought it could be a really weak War cover.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Freind or Foe

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm thinking about it, and "Fly" doesn't have the right beat. But I think Ant could rock the melody. I don't know why people don't like this song but then again I detect LOTS of Orange County mainstream hate on this board.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder WHY I would think that, Anthony!

If you lived here, the hate would boil in your soul, you scene tourist. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, Anthony, comparing Sugar Ray to ADAM ANT is taking things WAY TOO FAR. My god, I'm thisclose to posting pictures of Killing Joke and yelling honour the fire, and I like Good Charlotte.

Well, not really like but tolerate. ANYWAY YOU TAKE THAT BACK.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Sugar Ray are very different from Adam Ant. This I'll admit.

(don't ask me whose got more classic singles though. don't.)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

BECAUSE YOU KNOW THE ANSWER IS THE ANT MAN.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

NEIN! THE REIGN OF THE ANT HAS FALLEN!
ALL AROUND THE WORLD STATUES CRUMBLE FOR THESE GUYS!

http://www.sugarray.com/redesign/directory/photographs/promos/images/14593.jpg

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, you know, one really sharp sword could pretty well cut off all of their heads in one swoop.

I am wondering when Andrew Eldritch joined the band, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

WHEN HE REALIZED THAT THEY ROCKED!!!!!

THEY ROCK!!!!!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Antpeople eat sugarpeople for breakfast.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still laughing over the juxtaposition of "STATUES CRUMBLE FOR THESE MEN!" and that specific photo of Sugar Ray. You couldn't find one that looked a little less like the cast of Saved By The Bell: The New New Class?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I have to think it was a case of infiltration to eventually warp the band into performing "Lucretia My Reflection" on TRL.

Stupidest Sugar Ray moment ever (out of millions) -- that one bit in the one video showing them acting all punk at a punk club, ho ho. If I want real fakes, I'll go for the Vibrators. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha I can't make heads or tails of your post, Ned, but now you've got me imagining "Lucretia My Reflection" sang to the tune of "Every Morning" which is possibly the worst thing that's ever been done to me.

Except my own mind has just changed it to "Dominion/Mother Russia" sang to the tune of "Every Morning". FUCK.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Fearful!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Horrifying, even.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice videos. Shame about the songs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 April 2003 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

who's heard the peel sessions?

any good? meant to be aren't they?

pisces, Friday, 18 May 2007 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

four years pass...

okay I really think that if you have problems getting through KotWF you might be highly resistant to awesome music

(np: "Human Beings" on Youtube, about to move on to "Killer in the Home")

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

you know, you forget about just how great they were, and then you hear something from that golden moment - Kings, Stand and Deliver stuff. This was a truly, truly great band for a moment.

love in a grain elevator (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 4 July 2011 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

I don't forget it :) Stand and Deliver btw. For sheer mind blowing ambition, panache, A&tA wild drums; nobody ever did anything so golly- gosh swashbuckler awesome, ever. (& I concur w/ thread, you can't separate the songs from the videos, where videos were made.)

Also unknown as Zora (Surfing At Work), Monday, 4 July 2011 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

mark s doing Adam and the Ants at one week one band, it is tremendous.
