Oh dammit. One of the best years for music ever (just from going by the songs already mentioned -- but there's also "Gold Dust Woman", "Sonic Reducer", "Got To Give It Up (Part 1)", "Heroes", "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment", the entirety of Marquee Moon), and I have to pick ONE. OK, fine...

The Rezillo's "I Can't Stand My Baby" (first 7" version with green sleeve).

Although GGEs is indeed proven to the only punk rock artifact, this is only in the Newtonian Physics stylee. And as Heinstein would no doubt be able to PROVE by EVEN MORE SCIENCE that ICSMB is the only actual artefact as well (without GGE's changing from being the only Punk Rock artefact).

Either 'Roadrunner' (the organ-less version with the better ending which I think was released this year) by the Modern Lovers, or 'Telephone Line' by ELO (I can't recall this song ever being especially praised - but to me it sounds like space-age doo-wop, which is surely a fine thing - and it makes my hackles rise whenever I hear it.)
