So what did happen to Whipping Boy?

Their debut album is superb - a killer breakup album - but they seem to have disappeared without trace, anyone know what happened and if they're in any new bands? Oddly, everyone I know in Lancashire seems to own the Twinkle single (usually bought for 10p in the bargain bin), was this limited to North-West or has every household in Britain containing an (ex)indie kid also have a copy of this?

(Could say the same about the excellent (when you're 16 and in awe of junkies) Pusherman too).

They got whipped to fuck by a big stick.

Big stick = Sony you mean?

They were a good band, indeed -- that second album of theirs was a beaut (never heard the first, though I heard enough about it).

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never even seen a copy of the first album. Did Cheree actually release it? I've got the first 12" on Cheree which is excellent.

Seems like lots of people getting confused.

Whipping Boy issued two singles on Cheree, the first being great, the second being iffy. This was 1990. Then signed to - oh God - some label or other to issue their debut "Submarine", I think, which was iffy in places, and by 1992 nobody cared about sub-shoegazing anyway, and they rerecorded "Valentine 69" and it was shite.

Then Sony took interest around 1995, issued a bundle of singles like "Twinkle" (issued at least twice) and the album "Heartworm" which is indeedy a wonderful breakup record, then Sony realised that nobody was buying them unless the singles were sold for 10p in bargain bins (it happened in South Wales too, Ian), so dropped them.

They picked themselves up, issued a third self-titled album in 1999/2000, then promptly split up when nobody cared. But some of us did care, honestly.

Whipping Boy were great. They gave the best performance ever on Jools' Snoozefest too.

Check out this link for the whole, sorry tale:

Third album's not bad, but Heartworm is all you really need.

But delete the rogue space first...

Sorry about that!

Heartworm is a wonderful album!

Anyone seen them play this Summer? (they're back together!)

I saw them supporting Moe Tucker at Reading University.

And? C/D?

They're not very actively back together, though.

No more shows for the forseeable future.
We are trying to write another album, but it is going to be a slow process -we all have individual commitments, so we don't get to play together as much as we would like.

The were very striking. At first they looked like Tears for Fears being the Waterboys. Then the frontperson (Roland Orz lookalikey) got very intense, shouting silently into the 'abyss', hurled the mike away and stormed offstage.

I saw them later 'backstage', they were friendly (I held one of theirs' cinecamera while one of them went to the bog. And then we all went for a chat with Moe and Sterling.

I think the live stuff on the Twinkle single b-sides were overdubs on a tape I recorded from their soundboard.
I lost the mastertape moving out of a house 11 years ago. Thought I made a back up copy but never found it.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 19:10 (ten years ago)

There was a US hardcore band called Whipping Boy in the early '80s, fronted by Oxbow's Eugene Robinson.

heartworm has great production. didn't know until now it was produced by the same guy (wayne livesy) who did the resplendent babe rainbow by house of love.

So wish Miles had found the copy of the live Pod set that he dubbed from my original. I know he made a copy. MIne fell out of my pocket on moving out of a place I had to leave in a bit of a hurry. So I couldn't go back and retrieve it. One of my biggest musical related regrets. I think there may have been one other copy made so have hoped taht one might appear. Cassette stuck in mixing desk tape unit of quite a decent gig. Bah humbug on losing the master.

Stevolende, Sunday, 12 September 2021 08:32 (four years ago)

haven't played Heartworm in way too long. funny, I was just remembering the other day how good that new single in 2012 was, sad there wasn't more to follow.

I think the line up changed heavily from what started as a full reunion including the guitarist they played with live.members started dropping out and being replaced. Haven't seen them since then but I'm on wrong side of country.

mostly about the reissue, don't think they're reuniting

StanM, Monday, 13 September 2021 05:26 (four years ago)

I think Fearghal djed in a pub opposite Whelans for a while. certainly hung out there.

Stevolende, Monday, 13 September 2021 10:08 (four years ago)

Yeah, seems like a reunion isn't on the cards. Have been really enjoying the 'Heartworm' reissue and the general fact that the band have been getting to have a bit of a moment.

hamicle, Monday, 13 September 2021 21:31 (four years ago)

THere was a reunion about 10 years ago. I saw the band at the Roisin Dubh here in galway. Tried to get them interested in playing the party For The Pipe Festival in Mayo.
THat was what I was referring to. Not sure exactly who left and joined but I think they only wound up with a couple of the original memebers before they quit.

Stevolende, Monday, 13 September 2021 21:51 (four years ago)

I wonder why this isn't on the expanded reissue, always thought it would have fit on the album too (Twinkle B Side)

Really should get this, and I will.

Warne Livesey! I thought I recognised that name (from several albums apparently, even) - http://www.warnelivesey.com/

StanM, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 14:29 (four years ago)

Should start a thread about incomplete deluxe reissues.

Nah...

Yeah, I was aware of the previous reunion, just commenting that another reunion doesn't look likely just now.
