I always thought the title track was untouchable.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)
It's kind of perfect.
The woozy, beaten blur of Wake Up Alone for me, though. It's one of those songs that I only need to think about to get a lump in my throat.
― Alba, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)
Going with He Can Only Hold Her, the end of that song always gets me.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)
Another for the title track. Haven't heard all of it though.
― chap, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
Good poll. The title track is one of the best things ever, so it gets my vote. I love Tears Dry On Their Own too. But I never liked Rehab.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)
i think 'rehab' would stand so much more of a chance if it hadn't been completely overplayed (not least in tabloid headlines). but still, the way amy sings
and life is like a pipe and i'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside
is basically perfect, and that song wins
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)
sleeper choice - 'love is a losing game'
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, title track. Must have heard it a ridiculous number of times and I'm getting less tolerant of too many repeat listenings of just about everything, yet this song still staggers me every time I hear it.
― Lostandfound, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)
Me and mr jones. For one of the most kick-ass opening lines ever: 'what kind of fuckery is this'
― Christyles, Thursday, 24 July 2008 06:44 (seventeen years ago)
Even though every track on this album has been a favorite of mine at some point.
― Christyles, Thursday, 24 July 2008 06:46 (seventeen years ago)
I can't settle on what I think about Rehab. I think I understand its sentiment, but the "no no no"s somehow don't work for me. It's partly just that they edge it too close to R&B pastiche, something the rest of the album miraculously avoids.
― Alba, Saturday, 26 July 2008 08:47 (seventeen years ago)
"Love Is a Losing Game", but the title track is super-dope and "What kind of fuckery is this?" is on the motherfucking money.
― Noodle Vague, Saturday, 26 July 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)
Shit, "You Know I'm No Good" bangs close to home too.
I love almost the entire album although I'm not as big a fan of "You Know I'm No Good" as everyone else is.
but I voted "Tears Dry On Their Own", such an infectious chorus. But "Love is a Losing Game" is a VERY close second.
Such a great album.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 26 July 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)
title track on this is an absolute classic, one of my favorite songs of recent memory.
― akm, Saturday, 26 July 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)
...losing game. and PRINCE agrees!
― piscesx, Saturday, 26 July 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)
You Know I'm No Good is the one that's been a bit spoiled for me by overplay. They use its riff on TV a lot, notably on that dreadful Diary of a Call Girl thing.
― Alba, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
The overplayed singles have been out of my consciousness long enough now that i love them again. Especially "You Know I'm No Good".
― myndbloom, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)
Back to Black > Love is a losing Game > You KNow I'm No Good
i love almost all of it though.
― jed_, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)
Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.
― ILX System, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)
I just wanted to let you all know that I misread this as Amy Winehouse - Back to Blap
― strgn, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)
ummmmmm
no good (love the lyrics so much) > mr jones (fuckery!) > black > rehab > unholy (sleeper)> alone (also a sleeper)> losing game > just friends > tears (I don't the use of obv samples really works here) > that one at the end I can never remember
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)
It seems like Wake Up Alone is my song and my song alone. How miserably fitting.
― Alba, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
tears dry

Woosh. Thought Love Is A Losing Game would get more.
― Alba, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)
I didn't realize the title track was so universally loved
Me & Mr Jones 1
always the bridesmaid?
― The Reverend, Thursday, 31 July 2008 06:06 (seventeen years ago)
surprised "just friends" didn't get any votes
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 31 July 2008 06:10 (seventeen years ago)
I still love this album

― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:34 (fourteen years ago)
(honestly - at the risk of sounding like a megadork - I still feel that way a bit with Nirvana, sometimes it's always too soon idk)
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:35 (fourteen years ago)

starting to think this might be the most overrated album of all time. it’s a nice album, and it’s not its own fault, but if i see another “best albums” list that ranks this over every single soul album that inspired it, i’m gonna flip
― the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 3 June 2024 15:56 (two years ago)
(thinking specifically of the apple music list, where it was #7, but also the paste list, where it was in the top 40)
― the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 3 June 2024 15:57 (two years ago)
it's a recency bias; top 40 I can almost accept, but that apple music list is just stupid across the board.
― I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 3 June 2024 17:56 (two years ago)
I don't think we can call this album recent anymore
― Vinnie, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 10:53 (two years ago)
This is maybe one of the (if not <the>) last across the board approved "Classic Albums," no?
― an icon of a worried-looking, long-haired, bespectacled man (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 14:22 (two years ago)
Yeah, it's a very "tell me you don't listen to soul music without telling me you don't listen to soul music" choice.
― Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 4 June 2024 14:32 (two years ago)
What kind of fuckery is this?
― dinnerboat, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 17:45 (two years ago)
This is a top ten of the 21st century fucking album. Maybe top 5
― If your ass is a Bible, 213 will regulate (Neanderthal), Saturday, 2 May 2026 20:21 (one month ago)
(Sorry voodoo chili but u wrong. This album was built for me)
Also it's not merely a "soul" album, it was very much her rendition of 60s girl groups.
― If your ass is a Bible, 213 will regulate (Neanderthal), Saturday, 2 May 2026 20:24 (one month ago)
would watch the Connery Bond film for which “Love Is a Losing Game” plays over the credits

― If your ass is a Bible, 213 will regulate (Neanderthal), Saturday, 2 May 2026 21:43 (one month ago)
Playing this over breakfast (thank you Neando!) and when the title track came on I got a wave of chills, it's that good.
