This is harder than I thought it would be. It's between, unsurprisingly, the two big hits -- Rosanna and Africa -- and, surprisingly, some lesser hits, Hold The Line, 99, and I Won't Hold You Back. I think it's 99, tho.
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 22 May 2008 20:47 (eighteen years ago)
Bah. Rambling. It's 99.
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 22 May 2008 20:48 (eighteen years ago)
Georgy Porgy by a huge mile

that song is haunting...it seems sad in a way
― M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 22 May 2008 20:57 (eighteen years ago)
Had to download "Rosanna" to remind myself how much I like it. I still like it. I voted "Rosanna."

Why download what you can watch and stream?
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:01 (eighteen years ago)
I like how the Sisters of Mercy used that video set later, but just added water.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:04 (eighteen years ago)
"Hey now Hey now now Sing this Rosanna to me."
They look unbelievably dorky in this video, but 99 is still the winner.

My God the 80s was a bad decade for hair.
― Mr. Snrub, Friday, 23 May 2008 03:22 (eighteen years ago)
As I am going to be shortly blessing the rains down in Africa, I have had to choose that very song.
― The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:22 (eighteen years ago)
Oh my heavens. I haven't heard "I Won't Hold You Back" in about 17 billion years. I'd forgot about that one.
― Bimble, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:35 (eighteen years ago)
It's "Africa", really. "Rosanna" and "Georgy Porgy" are also gr8.
― Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:37 (eighteen years ago)
"Georgy Porgy"
― Myonga Vön Bontee, Saturday, 24 May 2008 00:16 (eighteen years ago)
Always loved "Africa."
― novaheat, Saturday, 24 May 2008 09:48 (eighteen years ago)
The 80s was also a bad decade for glasses.
― Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 24 May 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)
Rosanna, because it has everything.
Rock - check Soul - check Pop - check Funk - check, kind of Jazz - almost
What else do you need in one song?
― Matt #2, Saturday, 24 May 2008 17:25 (eighteen years ago)
"Hold The Line", easy. For a soft-rock song it's camp as tits. "I Won't Hold You Back" is no longer necessary thanks to Roger Sanchez, though I'd still say it's second.
― edwardo, Sunday, 25 May 2008 04:31 (eighteen years ago)
"Africa" - good italo version by Key Of Dreams, good edit of same by Rune Lindbaek, and MIMS vs Toto is a guaranteed floorfiller. Saw the lead singer of Erase Errata belt it out at karaoke once, too.
"Hold The Line" & "Rosanna" also U&K.
― etc, Monday, 26 May 2008 22:31 (eighteen years ago)
"Rosanna," but "Africa" is 1a.
― Fitzcarraldo, Monday, 26 May 2008 22:39 (eighteen years ago)
Etc., that link you posted leads to a YouTube error message (malformed video ID). Can you (or someone else) re-post it? In a weak moment of nostalgia, I'd really like to hear reimagined versions of Toto's hits.
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 27 May 2008 00:08 (eighteen years ago)
"africa" for the arrangement/production.

You all sure did like "Africa".
The top 3 here is really fair (could maybe switch "Hold the Line" and "Rosanna") - but "I'll Supply The Love" was robbed!
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)
The top 3 here is really fair
The top 3 is actually a top 4. But "Georgy Porgy" deserves to be there too.

99 and i won't hold you back now seriously underrated ballads.
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:44 (sixteen years ago)
how can we make toto "happen" again--how has a band this good not been rediscovered--i ask you
― max, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)
maybe it's the name and the lame album covers. and surely it's still cheesy to some ears.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 04:28 (fifteen years ago)
people! what are you going to do i guess
― max, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 04:32 (fifteen years ago)
If you want to rediscover Toto, drop in on a karaoke bar.
(This is no slight on them, btw. I like them a lot.)
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)
i just dont get why there arent a thousand toto-aping bands in w'burg or silver lake or whatever now?? like it seems as though they got completely bypassed??? i guess the dan and boz skaggs did too

Precisely. Jeff T and I made them happen again in karaoke the other night. (And yes it was "Africa.") So surely the rest must follow.

I do have a problem seeing Donkeyboy as particularly Toto-like, actually. They are more like 80s Fleetwood Mac with touches of Duran Duran and Jon Anderson on vocals.
― Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 08:47 (fifteen years ago)
I've been really really into "Rosanna" and "Waiting For Your Love" lately, what other songs and/or albums/collections should I check out based on my loving those songs?
― dorkslovesudoku (some dude), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)
well toto iv obviously. i think theres a two disc 'essentials' collection which is pretty good. their sound is pretty consistent, tbh, and from toto to toto iv you cant really go wrong. i dont know isolation or farenheit that well but they sound p good to my ears. my fave album is 'hydra'.
― max, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)
cool, thanks.
i watched Dune for the first time last week, was disappointed that i didn't notice any cool Toto pop jams.
― dorkslovesudoku (some dude), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)
apparently "Rosanna" was named after Rosanna Arquette? that's crazy.
― dorkslovesudoku (some dude), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)
I Won't Hold You Back didn't get any votes in that poll? At all? It's one of my favorite Toto singles and it was featured briefly in an American Dad episode. It's a perfectly cheesy 1980s power ballad.
― Just breaking it in, feels comfy (MintIce), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)
this band has layers. "stranger in town" video, starring future grima wormtongue actor guy, i think, disturbed the hell out of me as a kid
― kamerad, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)
"stranger in town" video, starring future grima wormtongue actor guy
I always thought that was their weird way of referencing the Dune work -- that album and single came out around the same time as the movie did, Brad Dourif's in the film as well, etc.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)
didn't know he was in dune too. guy is vying for science fantasy hall of fame inductionhaven't seen the video in a looooong time. still gives me chills and bums me out he doesn't get awayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NelbhjQ98i8

― "Smurfette's Smurfy Adventsmurf" (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 7 January 2011 06:40 (fifteen years ago)
that's such a horrible line. a totally failed metaphor and way too many syllables too. wtf
― /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\||||||( *__* )||||||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ (res), Friday, 7 January 2011 06:41 (fifteen years ago)
for a long time i used to sing "kilimanjaro rises like a lepress" without once thinking that this made no sense or even realizing that the word i was searching for was "leopardess." a quick google search has revealed that i'm not the only who had this problem.

― calstars, Saturday, 4 May 2024 19:07 (two years ago)
The son of John Williams
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 4 May 2024 19:18 (two years ago)
I know he entered after their “classic” period, but he is the one with the best vocals imho.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 4 May 2024 19:30 (two years ago)
His vocals also seem to hace actually gotten better with age which is usually the other way around.

Whereas Kimball's rough living destroyed his to the point where the last time he toured with Toto, they piped in the CD during the chorus of Africa
― RICH BRIAN (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 May 2024 20:30 (two years ago)
Inspired to ask because Kimball is so over the top, it cracks me up every time when he gets going with his “oohs” etc
― calstars, Saturday, 4 May 2024 20:30 (two years ago)
He was so nimble in his prime, hate that he basically can't sing anymore
