hahaha mouse on mars and mark e smith? what the fuck? i love it.
― The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 25 May 2007 00:11 (nineteen years ago)
it kicks ass!!
Anticipate? New collaboration between Mouse On Mars and Mark E. Smith is called Von Südenfed.
― chaki, Friday, 25 May 2007 00:23 (nineteen years ago)
that sound wiped is a fucking hit. oh man, it's so good.
― Emily Bjurnhjam, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)
Every song's a winner, except "Serious Brainskin", which annoys me.
The back cover photo scares me.
― henry s, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
I should volunteer to drive on an upcoming roadtrip just so I can control the music and play only this album and The Fall. It'd be a good intro for friends who didn't know who Mark E. Smith was.
― mh, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)
It's good.
― teflon monkey, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, it's good.
My favourite song is still the Rhinohead.
― Drooone, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)
I went out and bought this after I heard "That Sound Wiped" (I was shocked to learn M.E.S. didn't actually *have* to slur all his words these days) and playing it now it is really making me grin from ear to ear like a little kid.
All those who gave up on the Fall years and years ago, it's time to come out of hiding if you can stand dance music. I can give a speech at the Fall-coholics meeting. I have seen the light and it is Von Sudenfed!
― Bimble, Saturday, 23 June 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)
this is alright. need to listen to it more but i'm not as excited as some ppl.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 23 June 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)
Review: this is a very good album.
"SO I-AH FLOODED THE CLUB"
― King Boy Pato, Saturday, 23 June 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)
the songs that are good are REALLY GOOD, i will say. like that one.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 23 June 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)
I was expecting to just kind of like this, but it's really growing on me after a couple of listens.
And I love "Serious Brainskin" - much to my surprise - having got completely sick of MES' "isn't the world a crazy place" rants.
Yes, O yes...
― mrlynch, Thursday, 5 July 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)
This album is actually a lot more entertaining than it seems on the surface. Besides "Dearest Friends" redeems the whole affair.
― Bimble, Thursday, 5 July 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)
Are there remixes? what's the deal?
― Drooone, Thursday, 5 July 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)
I only know about the Max Tundra remix that's on the 12" (and on their myspace http://www.myspace.com/vonsudenfed )
― StanM, Thursday, 5 July 2007 06:55 (eighteen years ago)
Going to see them live in August at the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium, yay!
thats so awesome. i havent heard the remix yet but i love love love max tundra.
― chaki, Thursday, 5 July 2007 08:12 (eighteen years ago)
'Rhinohead' is the best track here by a mile, the others could be growers, me thinks after two listens.
― zeus, Thursday, 5 July 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

― Bimble, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah I want every single person who likes the manufactured freaking idiot pop diva shite that passes for music nowadays to watch that video. They're making fun of the whole ridiculous media farce!

― StanM, Sunday, 8 July 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)
just some dude making funny i guess
― wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 8 July 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, that guy's voice was really annoying.
― Bimble, Sunday, 8 July 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)
On Saturday - driving up to Newcastle - I finally got into Rhinohead - took me a while though.
I love the cover art. It makes me think of the decor in a crap 70s hairdressers. In a parallel universe where MES and Mouse on Mars were hair product models.
― mrlynch, Monday, 9 July 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)
this is pretty rad.
the second MoM on the cover looks uncannily like an ex of mine.
― get bent, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)
God, I've been reading this as "Von Sudafed" since the beginning, and am hugely disappointed to discover my error.

I've been reading this as "Von Sudafed" since the beginning
The similarity is intentional.

Suden = South in German... does Suden + Fed add up to some kind of pun? Southern ____?
― Jon Lewis, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)
fed
― s1ocki, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)
'südenfeld' means southern field... if theres a pun there, i dont get it
― ☪, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)
I think one of the Mouse On Mars guys is from a town called Suden or Sudenfeld and MES though of Sudafed and there you go.
― Mr. Odd, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)
The Suden Will Rise Again
― Jon Lewis, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)
Loving Von Südenfed right now, this stuff slays. Particularly the track "That Sound Wiped", take a second listen if you didn't get into it right away. Marky Smith is godhead.
― Wrinklepaws, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)
That song is very extremely good.
You don't look like no goddamned singer-songwriter to me

― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)
Can't MES forget about his squad rotation system and draft the MoM boys as the latest version of The Fall for a few more albums-uh?
― King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)
That or have MES join MoM. Or forget both and go under the Von Sudenfed banner forever. Because it's FUCKING WUNDERBAR.

Both are aged Mancunians babbling over 'dance' 'music'.
― Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)
I propose we add Section 25's new album to this Mancunian 2007 game. Whereas I just can't quite get really interested in the new Happy Mondays, the new Section 25 is pretty damn good.
But Von Sudenfed trumps all, I think.
― Bimble, Monday, 16 July 2007 00:16 (eighteen years ago)
Mouse on Mars. Like Tromatic Reflexxions but no MES... Still fucking great!

― d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 23:36 (seventeen years ago)
Somewhere on ILX I once said something along the lines of "I don't get The Fall". Those days are over. My hitherto tiny mind has been expanded. And this is only the start. Although, weirdly, the stuff I'm REALLY getting into is the late 80's/90's material. This is mostly because it's the only stuff I've really laid hands on so far. The Marshall Suite is a completely brilliant record, The Light User Syndrome not far behind, This Nation's Saving Grace is awesome awesome awesome (holy shit Paint Work), and the A Past Gone Mad compilation is pretty much flawless. Birmingham School Of Business School! The day I finally acquire Hex Enduction Hour will be a joyful one. I reckon I'm stepping in the right direction tho'. Actually the two records I'd really like to hear next are Levitate and The Unutterable. Hope that isn't sacrilegious. But my favourite Fall song so far might well be The Crying Marshall and the garage-electro sound really suits MES' style imo. Not that I don't rate the earlier stuff. I have Perverted By Language as well. That record seems to be mostly all about the Garden - Hotel Bloedel one-two punch. It's really nice, if a bit sparser than the later material. Gosh, I need to stop typing.
― a steak of romanticism (country matters), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 23:48 (seventeen years ago)
Glad you're getting into the Fall! I think it's funny that you said you're stepping in the right direction because there's a song on Hex Enduction Hour called "Just Step 'Sways". Maybe you knew that, though. And for what it's worth, I didn't "get" The Fall at first, either.
― To Float Away On A Lifelong Song (Bimble), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 00:05 (seventeen years ago)
I went through the same thing. I compare the Fall to one of those "Magic Eye" pictures, like they tend to look like nothing for a long time and then suddenly this image pops out at you... I was almost the same w/the Fall. They suddenly just made sense.
Hex is great.
Honestly I think The Real New Fall LP (Formerly County on the Click) is up there with anything they've done too, if you want a 00s record.
― d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 15:15 (seventeen years ago)
I'm currently going through this with Zappa (sort of, because there's still a lot about him I hate, but at least the orig. Mothers 60s records I'm digging now)
― d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 15:16 (seventeen years ago)
Levitate is amazing.

― Slade Venom Secret Police (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 3 February 2011 06:30 (fifteen years ago)
Was listening to this yesterday as well! Marvellous album, so much fun and invention. Had a fluhdid the club moment on the train home. Periodically suggestions rise that they'll do another one surface, but I'm not sure Smith will consider it unless he's strapped for cash.
― Herr Kapitan Pugvosh (GamalielRatsey), Thursday, 3 February 2011 07:59 (fifteen years ago)
If he was strapped for cash, he'd make another fall album, surely?
― Mark G, Thursday, 3 February 2011 11:59 (fifteen years ago)
Not sure about that to be honest. I think a lot of the collaborative stuff, and indeed Fall repackaging stuff, as well as more or less constant touring, is partly driven by this (speculation on my part, but fairly strongly felt). The MoM collaboration was both high-profile and successful and MoM have said they'd be happy to work with him again.

MoM are incredibly good live. Von Sud live would be great, did they tour this?
― mmmm, Sunday, 26 June 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)
I've been waiting for Mouse on Mars to come back to the states again for, like, 7 years. At this point they are the band I most want to see live right now. Well, "at this point" has pretty much been the past 7 years.
― brie on crüt (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 27 June 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)
Von Sud live would be great, did they tour this?
I saw them perform with it twice, the first at.. Fabric was it? which was good (v good Fledermaus Can't Get It). And Heaven, which was absolutely fantastic. Extremely memorable. Even the security stewards were grinning at one point. There are recordings I believe.
― Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Monday, 27 June 2011 09:23 (fourteen years ago)
Was that the one were he kept on distractedly wandering off the stage? And it was also insanely loud? It was an experience, certainly.
― ledge, Monday, 27 June 2011 10:24 (fourteen years ago)
Hmmm, he did go off stage a bit, but I guess I'm used to that (he often likes to sing behind the amps I think). We're probably talking about the same one, as the Fabric one was rather less chaotic iirc.
― Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Monday, 27 June 2011 10:30 (fourteen years ago)

i was the DJ tonight, the other DJ pissed the bed.
― maelin, Friday, 2 April 2021 21:01 (five years ago)
i spent the past week listening to 'flooded' on repeat, and i can't get over how hilarious the concept is. since there's no printed lyrics, i found myself wondering the words past the above lines. i got so far as realizing that it's essentially a (presumably) fictional vignette of mark having a barney with an events manager over who 'booked the club', while sven väth - a popular german DJ - argues that he was in fact the disc jockey of the evening; mark then berates sven väth for requiring a rubber sheet for his set ("he pissed the bed").
not to insult anyone's intelligence at all or anything, especially not ilxors, but i really do feel like mark's storytelling is overlooked sometimes... this track is exemplary penmanship of his to me - it takes you a while to decipher what he's banging on about, but when you do, and it clicks, it's just fucking class.
― maelin, Thursday, 29 August 2024 22:29 (one year ago)
It was Mark's interpretation of a dream that Jan St. Werner had told him, in which he'd been booked to DJ a club but then gets booted off the decks by Sven Väth.
It’s kind of funny: he’s translating this dream I had. In the dream, I had to book the whole club because I am such a lousy DJ; I had to buy the whole club out for that night. So I’m arriving there with all my records, glad that I can finally play all these great tunes that I have invested all my money into. And I get there, and there is already a DJ, the in-house DJ. He’s like, “You might’ve booked the club but I’m the DJ, I’m putting on the records”. And then, I’m going so insane that I flood the club, flushing the whole thing away. Mark liked the dream so much that he put down lyrics straight away. With him, he thought also of the connotations of having a dream and something going really wrong and you piss your bed, in this Freudian way. There’s this reverse personality on the track, which is a recurring theme of the record – who is actually who? Like, I’m the narrator, and also the band member, then he’s Mark E. Smith, then he becomes me, then he’s the DJ, then the DJ’s pissing in his own bed.
