OPO: Cameo

For me it's pretty easily the 12" Version of "She's Strange," but the vast majority of their early-to-mid-'80s output was so friggin' great, minor-chord icy R&B like no one else. Cameo freaks, rise!

"CANDY"

(altho sometimes it's "Alligator Woman")

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, as much as I love so much of their stuff, if could listen to only one of the songs for the rest of my life, it'd have to be "Candy." The world really isn't complete without that one. That bass and those drums are life affirming.

Somebody eventually has to take a bullet for "Word Up". Might as well be me. Love that song.

"Candy"?!...now I KNOW you're just talkin out the side of your neck...

"Alligator Woman," no question. GREAT high school make-out music. My girlfriend always used to giggle at the "Your big behind / It makes me blind" part.

Their ballads always get a short shrift. Feel Me, Why Have I Lost You, Sparkle, I'll Always Stay, I Care for You, Give Love a Chance, and on and on.

Word Up

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 25 January 2007 00:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm with Thomas on "She's Strange". The chorus just slays me - "And I like it" is one of the best rejoinders in pop music. There is an implied shit-eating-grin in the delivery that makes me smile each and every time.

AndyK: when it comes to their ballads, I've always been partial to "Don't Be Lonely" (and again with the minor synth chords!).

"Candy" for sure.

"It's serious" from We all know who we are.

"Be Yourself" from the Alligator Woman LP. That whole album ranks as one of the all time funk classics.

The first side (i.e., all the hits) from Word Up is good too. I never knew anyone who played the other half.

Throw It Down is of my favorite bass performances of all time. It growls. Aaron Mills is a god.
