"I Love You" from Archaeology. Amazing pop tune that approximates the softer love songs of the Fabs circa A Hard Days Night, yet can't be traced back to a specific song (tough "And I Love Her" comes closest to an origin point).

I managed to pick up a Rutles EP with picture sleeve in a antiques shop for £1! I was a happy man, especially as it means that I've been able to spin I Must Be In Love and Cheese & Onions while DJing.
IMBIL is my favourite. It's so great. "I feel good, I feel bad, I feel happy I feel sad, Am I in love? (Aah ahh) I must be in love?"

So it is Living In Hope. It's just Barry Wom's mushmouthed delivery made me think Hull for some reason. I quite like the idea of that, although it changes the meaning of the song. What hope lies in Hull?

I haven't seen All You Need Is Cash in a million years... must get DVD...

...and compare with Beatles' Anthology. The attention to detail is mindblowing in parts.

Not on the CD, but on the DVD yes I think. In fact, I thought somebody was going to mention that Barry Wom song "When You Find The Girl Of Your Dreams In The Arms Of Some Scotsman From Hull," or whatever it's called, as being their favorite Rutle's song. But maybe that's where the Hull upthread came from.

Rutles is kind of over-rated, but if I had to puick a fave I guess it would be "I Love You" or maybe "We've Arrived! And To Prove It, We're Here" both from Archaeology.
Deluxe's recommendation to search Deface The Music is seconded. Never trying to be "funny" gives it a huge advantage over Rutle stuff, and the songs are generally way better too.

The rarities disc from the Galaxie 500 box has been rereleased as a stand-alone disc titled Uncollected. You can find "Cheese and Onions" there if you don't have the box (which is long out of print).

On the subject of great Rutles covers, I really like the Pussywillows' version of "Hold My Hand" (also on Rutles Highway Revisited).

Todd Rundgren wrote "I Just Want to Touch You" for the movie Roadie (you know, the Meatloaf vehicle). It was rejected by the producers for being to "Beatlesy." To say the least.

Love the Rutles film, but laugh harder at the old Mr. Show sketch about the Fad 3 (Beatles doppelganger/contemporaries who produce only photographs and not a note of music.) "Today, Ken divides his time between the sales floor of the department store where he is employed, and the break room. He's said he would be willing to do a reunion photo, but only under any circumstances." - classic.

Um um um.... wow, I'm torn on this one. I think "Cheese and Onions" is probably the best one in terms of nailing the John impression while not clearly being just a rewrite of a single existing song (although, as discussed on the "your favorite fictional band" thread, "Get Up And Go" pretty much betters "Get Back" in some ineffable way). "Cheese and Onions" is actually catchy and memorable entirely on its own terms, and the whole "man and machine" section is really quite inspired.

Has anyone ever seen "Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch" ? Reviews are that it's horrible, which I would have predicted.

Also, anyone who loves the Rutles that wasn't alread familiar with "The Compleat Beatles" ..? I think the Rutles movies is so much funnier, seeing it as a ripoff of an existing Beatles documentary.

Gottta say "Between Us" for that downward-stepping verse but yeah most of them are up there with the best Beatles imitators. Actually "I Must Be in Love" may be my favorite for the way they sing 'luv'. The perfect Beatles accent!
