I have no pictures, but I did fine this quote from an interview w/ML in Psychology Today (?!):

ML: Without meditation, I'd probably be dead. It has allowed me to transcend all the bothersome things that happen during the course of a day, a week, a month, a career or a lifetime. I go beyond a certain level of thought. Some of those types of thoughts come from a stressed physiology. They appear in your mind as, "I want to kill that person," "I want to kick the dog," "I want to hurt my wife," "I want to emotionally abuse people."

Ummm... no, they don't, Mike.

awesome! i always thought he swapped a "t" for a "c" when he bragged about his meditatation...now im sure hes on the drugs.

Apparently that last one was too large to display. So be it. But by all means, click. His name really is Mike Love -- and yes, he's the little one.

craig keller (evillights), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the real challenge would be to do a google image search for mike love and find one picture that's not weird in some way.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a pretty difficult challenge there, walter.

I already posted a nice pic of Mike + Brian looking like a weirdo in the studio way upthread.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 29 April 2005 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, I wasn't sure if that was Brian. I thought it looked like him, but couldn't entirely tell. Never seen Brian Wilson look like an emo kid with box glasses and black hair (I know the hair just appears black-ish because of the photo.)

can't work out if this one is comically doctored or a genuine attempt to remove red-eye by drawing pure black circles on top of eyes.

Black holes, man -- itty bitty black holes.

I love how the text is arranged strategically so that Mike seems to be fixating on it, tell-tale heart style, with his blue, vulture-like, wandering right eye. Of course in reality there was probably a sushi bar/massage parlor/naked lady positioned just outside the frame.

Closer now to the destination of his culinary pilgrimage, Love made a beeline through the crowd into Quincy Market, weaving through the throngs of grazing tourists with his arm around his daughter. We pushed through the sensory overload of grilled meats, fried fish, pizzas, spices, and sweets that permeated the stuffy food court. Mango drinks and dosas from the Bombay Club were procured. "I love Indian food," Ambha explained. "My name is Indian."

"It's actually an ancient goddess name," said her father as he searched for a table. He traveled to India for the first time in 1968 to take a course by the Maharishi. "It was the same time the Beatles were there. George Harrison and I had our birthday parties there the same month, thrown by the Maharishi," he said.

A lengthy discussion on the history of transcendental meditation followed as Love unpacked the bag of dosas and spicy Indian soup, placing a spoon in our bowl and making sure we had enough napkins. His hands were bejeweled in a dazzling array of rings and bracelets. Love walked us through his techniques of chanting, meditation as a means to invoke the powers of nature, spiritual safaris to the temples of Southern India, and harnessing the powers of positive energy.

A lot to take in between spoonfuls of lentils. He's been meditating daily since that first trip to India and even became a teacher of transcendental meditation.

"There is fascinating knowledge to be gained," he said.

Indeed there is. All you have to do is listen.

I ♥ this guy. I don't know why I ever doubted him.

doing some reading about paul horn and realizing that this, a record cover i've seen a thousand times, was (1) recorded inside the taj mahal and (2) is actually sweet as hell. i can only describe this as a failure of marketing. i mean, why would you call the record "inside" and stick your big sweaty face on the cover unless you had taken courses at the Herbie Mann School on repulsive marketing tactics ??

I was reading up on him a bit last year, seems an interesting guy - recorded similar albums in other hallowed locations across his career. Always curious about the market for these records - who was buying them, how often they played them and in what circumstances.
