Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You want to listen to the new Roots Manuva album...sounds very 1995 in places.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

When we're sure Dido will never again record a note.

BARMS, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

you're gonna have to wait for this acid house revival to die down...give it 4 months

b b, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The trouble with trip-hop was/is that its sound was/is so easily hijacked.

Not unlike like the rest of electronic music circa the turn of our century that was (or can be) diluted through mass appeal.

sneekycheeks (nader), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

trip it low:

jermaine (jnoble), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not to say, however, that reading Marcello's Roots Manuva comment above doesn't make me all the more intrigued and likely to purchase Awfully Deep.

sneekycheeks (nader), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"all the more intrigued by and likely to purchase"

sneekycheeks (nader), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello otm. I haven't put my finger on exactly how yet, but Awfully Deep makes me think of Maxinquaye a lot.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the answer to the thread question is: "When Portishead finally release their third album."

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't it Rodney's 'soul-bearing' record?

A SMOKING BONG LADEN WITH DARK AND PARANOID BEATS

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I recently listened to some Nightmares on Wax albums for the first time. Does this count? Their DJ Kicks reminded me a lot of Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz mixes, but I don't know if that's really trip-hop.

Also, hearing "Rise" was very strange. I'm almost positive I've heard it like a thousand times years and years ago, but I can't place it. My guess is either it was on some generic trip-hop comp CD my brother bought and I borrowed, or it was played a lot on whatever live365 station I used to listen to.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

mo wax heads sampler in the record store I used to work at in the 90s. Ahh....the memories.

wordyrappington (wordyrappington), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't that "bong laden" quote reserved for No U Turn? smiley face.

little johnny at the hospital (cs appleby), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I never want to hear any of this music again.

There's that trip-hoppish song (Who Pays The Bills) that almost ruins the Ada album. *shudder*

just adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam, Never?

little johnny at the hospital (cs appleby), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it is trip-hoppish!! good call adam

'Trip-Hop' is a terrible term to begin with, which makes it easily dissable. Maybe it sounded cool at the time, sort of like 'alternative rock', but it's certainly due for a comeback, under a different heading.

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone talk to me about trip-hop being dead, stagnant, out of fashion, played-out etc.

OK, since the topic interested me, I searched ILM and found that there is plenty of great discussion on this topic already in a more general sense (or as it applies to, for example, dnb). Still, any trip-hop specific comments? Was there a scene that birthed it or did it give birth to a scene? Can anyone pick a turning point where people/artists started to lose interest? Or is it not really dead at all -- am I being mislead by the fact that it is largely ignored or dismissed offhand in the music-related writing/criticism I read?

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

er, xpost

Jena's and sneeky's comments are a good start

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

btw Marcello..I'm lovin what I hear from Roots Manuva. I've been a smart sucker for that guy for a long time now.

Trip-hop was my Britpop when I was 15, so I don't think of it in a negative light at all: the big trip-hop acts just aren't as awful as the big Britpop ones in hindsight (ts: Portishead vs Oasis HAHAHAHA) and even the more embarrassing also-rans aren't that bad - I still maintain that Olive had two awesome singles. Er, who else was there? Lamb, Earthling, Nicolette, second Shara Nelson album, Morcheeba, Ragga & The Jack Magic Orchestra, Ingrid Schroeder, Coco & The Bean, I'm sure I'm forgetting loads.

I always thought of Laika as trip-hop since I got into them at the same time and enjoyed them for the same reasons.

Moloko got bracketed as trip-hop with their first album, wtf.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

top 10 trip hop albums that pwn the rest of your shitty cd collection

wagon christ - throbbing pouch
urban tribe - collapse of modern culture
la funk mob - the bad seeds 93-97
nightmares on wax - smoker's delight
sabres of paradise - haunted dancehall
skylab - #1
reflection - the errornormous world
depth charge - lust vol 1
fila brazillia - maim that tune
as one - planetary folklore

ok mind you i didn't even mention air, portishead, tricky, massive attack, compilations, mixes, etc etc

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

or are we talking about post-portishead downtempo music with a requisite female singer? because by and large a lot of that stuff does suck.

tho i have a soft spot for coco&the bean and i really like their compilation "blunted" that came out on shadow...

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone pick a turning point where people/artists started to lose interest? Or is it not really dead at all

well, honestly i think really the conditions of possibility weren't really there for the style post 9/11

but i think M.I.A. is bringing it back!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

vahid OTM up there. is blunted the all scottish acts one vahid?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.A, hmmm. I completely missed the connection.

when will the holy ghost trip-hop be alive again?? (cs appleby), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i was being completely facetious in that post =(

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Heehee don't sweat it.
What's Urban Tribe??

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 17 March 2005 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

urban tribe may have been on mo wax but i don't really think its trip hop? its REALLY BENT detroit shit.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 17 March 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

also not sure that as one disc qualifies? or the sabres disc.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 17 March 2005 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Haunted Dancehall qualifies even though Weatherall is a champion genre money jumper. That's a fat album.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh for god's sake IT QUALIFIES

thank god i didn't go with my original plan of including boards of canada

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

DOES NOT :P

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it is trip-disco

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

good. its the hop that clunks.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a track on music television that samples portishead, but the burning question is: AMYL HOUSE: WHITHER?

N_RQ, Thursday, 17 March 2005 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Trip-Gabba

wo ist meine koybords? (Lynskey), Thursday, 17 March 2005 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i was wondering what happened to Earthling after listening to 'Nefisa' again the other day. he was a good lyricist, maybe even better than Tricky but lacking the 'throat'...

it would've been great to hear original rhymes over tracks like Sabres 'Bubble & Slide', great track to mix stuff over

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 17 March 2005 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i know it's not trip hop but it reminds me of metalheadz (and oh boy!) david holmes at times: horsepower productions "at the rescue." i don't know if i should get their first album as idon't know how it compares to that one.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Thursday, 17 March 2005 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

oh there's a new earthling record out... i think... well, i have one in my itunes. didn't strike me as good as the other one...

eighteen years pass...

In the past 3-5 years I’ve noticed a surge in 90’s revival and trip hop influenced artists.

Billie Eilish, ASO, Tirzah, Bea1991, George Clanton, James K, Hatchie, Doss, Jorja Smith, Elaine Howley, Men I Trust, Nosaj Thing, Christine and the Queens…

Here’s a playlist with some selections (not everything is strictly triphop but most is):

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2023 14:47 (two years ago)

My son recommended Whatitdo Archive Group to me, who are maybe more aligned with lounge revival or soundtrack/library music but there's trip hop in there as well.

one year passes...

just found the elaine howley album from 2022 and this was the only mention of her i could find on ilm. i'm getting "triphop via kate bush" vibes and i like it very much.
