ILM Most Hated 2005

After suffering some pretty heavy abuse here for being into the wrong type of music (ie. Mars Volta, Bright Eyes, Sigur Ros,) i think we should make a list of bands new or old you dont want us to like, maybe with a tag line as to why they're so detestable. :-)

dmun, Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll start, as i'm pretty sure most people are against the Killers (not me though, i think theyre fun)

dmun, Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Mars Volta--not so bad, but if you're going to do prog, bring some songs too
Bright Eyes--way too much hype (and ass?) for fair to middling talent, hence the scorn
Sigur Ros--not as hated as you think, just the people not into them are very vocal

The real ILM most hated, I'd say, are

Ryan Adams
Dave Matthews
Jimmy Buffett

Others would quibble.

I would like to think that there's enough room for serious discussion of any music here, but it's definitely true that there are some artists you just can't have threads about without bringing out the haters.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Regular ILM posters already put together a list of their most hated here

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Whiskeytown was awesome, though.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I like 6 Organs and Black Mountain, but I AM NOT REGULAR.

Snake, Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Try some Shredded Wheat.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago) link

haha Dom that Pitchfork joke is so not true. cross reference ILM's end of year lists with PF's lists and get back to me.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:51 (nineteen years ago) link

hahha run the road on ILMs most hated list?! unlikely.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Just make it clear at ALL times that you detest Annie, and you should do alright in the ILM-couch.

Øystein (Øystein), Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

ILM hates........anything covered in the NME?

chinviolet (chinviolet), Saturday, 26 February 2005 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, you mean ILM hates the Libertines? Maybe i belong here after all.

dmun, Sunday, 27 February 2005 12:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Sigor Ros are good for reading comics to, my dog likes them.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 27 February 2005 12:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't listen to ILM. ILM likes Hitler.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 27 February 2005 13:00 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a fair bit of love for Hitler's s/t debut. His later work with the Nazis was shit though.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Sunday, 27 February 2005 13:03 (nineteen years ago) link

ILM loves itself.

billstevejim, Monday, 28 February 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Sigor Ros are good for reading comics to, my dog likes them.

ergo, your dog likes reading comics.

RS, Monday, 28 February 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Could we not just start a new forum called: "I Love Hating Music"

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 28 February 2005 14:59 (nineteen years ago) link

One gets the impression that any band whose pendulum swings far enough into the hated zone on ILM is bound to swing back a little.

That said, I definitely feel like I get a cold silence every time I bring up Gillian Welch, whom I rather like.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm guessing that's because most people don't have much of an opinion on Gillian Welch one way or the other.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe you're right. Chuck has been known to say that she's "boring," but he seems to find a lot of things I like boring.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Hurting, do you even *like* music?

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Hurting, she needs a funny dwarf and a rapper to actually be good country music.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Monday, 28 February 2005 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

That said, I definitely feel like I get a cold silence every time I bring up Gillian Welch, whom I rather like.

She has her fans around here (and no I'm not one, but I don't like that sort of stuff much anyway).

Gear! OTM. (I hope Chuck forgives me.)

RS, Monday, 28 February 2005 19:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I have to admit I can't get that dirgey Mars Volta ballad hit song out of my head... (at least I got the video out of my head)

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I like Gillian Welch well enough, but I'd have to be on dopamine or valium to sit through an entire record of hers. As such, my response to her is 'meh.' Maybe that should be its own thread: ILM Most Meh 2005.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

i'll take gillian welch over scores of other country acts these days. $.02.

i think it's fair to say that every ilm poster likes something that most others don't.

dmun, you're not alone.

(also, a couple of those bands you mentioned have their admirers... or had at least. i know i still like the recent sigur ros ep that came out in 2004. "ba da bing" or something like that?)
m.

msp (msp), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Do Mogwai provoke strong opinions or are they just another 'meh!'?

dmun, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 11:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it safe to say regular ILMers have a robust dislike for Wilco?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I like Jimmy Buffett okay.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I like Summerteeth, and songs here and there.

regulArilmer, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

And how do you feel about Hoobastank?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

mogwai rock. gillian welch sucks.

strong opinions, although not very well articulated, i'll admit.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I have never knowingly heard hoobastank.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

>she needs a funny dwarf and a rapper to actually be good country<

hardly:

Rolling 2005 Country Thread

but *some* kind of non-schoolmarm life in her music might be nice

chuck, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Gillian Welch feat. Ghostface Killah - "Rollin' on the Prairie"

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't like any Gillian Welch album all-the-way-through either. But she has some great songs (Caleb Meyer, Time: The Revelator, etc.)

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:25 (nineteen years ago) link

U2 of course. It's always U2.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Donna Brown, who used to post here, was a huge Wilco fan.

I find myself in the interesting position of wanting to defend Wilco (or at least Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the singles from A.M., and bits and pieces A Ghost is Born) on ILM, and simultaneously giving all my friends shit for worshipping at the Altar of Tweedy.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I really love Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but other than about half of Summerteeth and a few songs from Being There, I'm really not a huge Wilco fan. But yeah, I really really love YHF so its constant slagging on this board gets my goat sometimes.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 05:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm surprised at how much crap Jim O'Rourke gets on this board. But he gets a lot of praise too.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 05:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I have one that most people here will agree on:

Lenny Kravitz

Although, some of the songs on Let Love Rule are decent ...

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:34 (nineteen years ago) link

U2 from War to The Joshua Tree is pretty damn great. And Eno produced some of their rekkids!
