Sussudio by Phil Collins: classic or dud?

Just heard this on the radio in the supermarket. What a great song. Is it time yet for a massive reevaluation of Phil's 80s work?

Paul Man, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

dear god no

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

And I don't mean it in an ironic Patrick Bateman way. I seriously do think his 80s singles (with a few exceptions) are pretty unimpeachable pop.

Paul Man, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite agree, at least as far as the early-mid '80s stuff is concerned; he kind of lost me with his give-a-penny-to-the-poor-wino-in-the-street-pah-I'm-going-to-leave-Britain-if-Labour-win-the-election type songs.

I would say (and indeed have said in the past) that "Sussudio" is a better variation on "1999" than "1999" itself.

Also he did a fantastic production job on Frida's first solo album, Something's Going On. Her reading of "If You Know What I Mean" is as heartbreaking as anything in Abba's blue period.

i felt a mini phil revival a few months

mainly sparked by the intro to jet - ar you gonna be my girl being identi-kit to his version of you can't hurry love

but then i've never been the kinda guy famous for my taste

"in the air tonight" is gorgeous.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"In The Air Tonight" was a pretty avant-garde hit single by early 1981 standards. People forget that Face Value got rave reviews in the weeklies at the time; it was compared to Fripp's Exposure among other things.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

according to the Guinness Book of BHS if he had named it "Zoo-sudio" he would have been the first artist to chart with songs that start with every letter of the alphabet. (this includes genesis, and when he was in chas and dave)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Now come on, when was Our Phil ever in Chas and Dave? Their drummer was (and presumably still is) called Nick. I know this because they used to be on The Jim Davidson Show every week when I were a lad.

Has anyone done it since?

I don't remember any Phil Collins hits beginning with the letters "Q" or "X."

Phil Collins looks like a penis possessed by a demon.

Phil Collins' "Quiche Lorraine" hit no. 19.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The only Phil song I can really give a fuck about it the "Against All Odds" song, if only because I remember enjoying the film (which, in retrospect, is like one long, painfully ridiculous episode of Miami Vice), and because it reminds me of a high school crush.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

First, the Gin Blossoms. Then it was "Cherry Pie". Now someone seems to be sincerely asking if maybe perhaps "Sussudio" is CLASSIC?

Whatever I have to say about this song can be no better than what Mimi Smartypants wrote:

Slicked-back hair, mirrored sunglasses, suit and tie, this jag-off in a Jaguar is speeding through a yellow light in River North, and---for real---he is blasting the Phil Collins song "Sussudio" on what is no doubt a very expensive car stereo. I was like: Wait, was that Patrick Bateman? Please tell me that was some sort of prank, like the guy is participating in a rousing game of Rich Person's Truth Or Dare, because why, why, why would you listen to "Sussudio" in the car, where other people can hear you? I mean, maybe you are allowed to keep the Phil Collins CD in a dark closet and throw on "Sussudio" when you are cleaning the house or something, but even that is skating on some very, VERY thin musical-taste ice, mister. The only possible use I can see for that song is maybe using it to clear the last few cokeheads out of your house when dawn is breaking and you need the party to be OVER, NOW. (Somebody call Sartre, quick: I am having a new vision of existentialist hell where it is always five in the morning and everyone is doing coke and there is always Phil Collins on the stereo. Oh my god I have to go lie down.)

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I will defend the Gin Blossoms and "Cherry Pie," but I won't go near Phil Collins. I don't care if he did play drums for Eno, he is still a lame-o.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I only find him interesting in the sense that, since the Boomers were still the largest generation in the '80s, there was a lot more older, ugly people having big chart hits. In the '90s Unplugged turned most of these guys into nostalgia hounds or Disney slaves, and now youth truly reigns supreme. It's funny to think about people who look like Phil Collins getting on MTV today.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I just made a beat that samples "In Too Deep", it's rrreal.

I think "Sussudio" is classic. I remember seeing it on VH1's worst songs list or whatever, and getting really angry about it.

Moby looks even worse than Phil Collins.

"Sussudio" is some sort of classic of the genre. It's nice enough to hear it on the radio or whatever maybe once every two or three years. Phil Collins has his moments he was a hip hop idol.

awakener, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

R&B idol, I'd say (Nelson George has a hissyfit about kids thinking Phil Collins is as R&B as Lionel Richie in his fine book about R&B history, I think it's called The Death Of Rhythm & Blues)

I'll stand up for "Sussudio" and maybe (if I'm in a good mood) The Gin Blossoms...but theres no way in hell I'll defend "Cherry Pie". That song sounds like something that David Lee Roth would've thought up while eating his breakfast, wrote the first verse in head, realized it was shit, and didn't bother finishing.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine was playing some early goth-rock, probably Sisters of Mercy. I asked him who it was and he told me. I told him it sounded a lot like early 80s Phil Collins.

"Sussudio" does not sound like Sisters of Mercy. So I give Phil no respect for it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

That Mimi Smartypants quote pasted by Pleasant Plains upthread reminds me of something I read on McSweeney's, by the guy who used to do their NFL picks:

How Teams Play
Jacksonville at Baltimore — Both teams are a mid-tier rental car. Maroon. You got ripped off. You didn't figure on the tax being 41 dollars. Someone recently passed gas in this vehicle and the smell will not go away. You're driving. Without a map. Hitting all the red lights. In downtown Pensacola. Drinking a Vanilla Coke. "Sussudio" is playing. Your nose starts to bleed. Prediction: Baltimore.

That works pretty well, I think, in giving an idea of in what situations Sussudio is now appropriate. Painful ones.

Lyrics to ODB's "Sussudio" - which I have not heard:
"Sussudio"

Dirty?

Phil Collins
Ol' Dirty
Yeah, Su-su-ssudio
Sudioo

[Ol' Dirty Bastard]
This recording is dirty and a-stinkin'
Pukier than Pepe' le Peu
So I was thinkin
About, droppin' this single on the charts
Letting you know
"Hey! The kid has heart"
I never deny myself as being dope
But in my last jam, niggas slept on my notes
You thought that I was weak
Uhh, let me speak
My rhymes come funkier than your gram'phone would speak
So listen, mister, don't you ever forget
The rhyme are dirty, you couldn't clean it with Comet
Or even Morax, some try Ajax
Only mix with the best, 48 tracks
Yo, I get down with the eight song sound
Lyrics that be flowing from miiiiiles around
So let the music shut ya ass up
And feel the uppercut that'd make you fall to your butt, w-what!

[Chorus:]

[Female singer]
If he calls me, I'll be there
I'll come running, anywhere
He's all I need, all my life
Feels so good if I just say the word
Su-Su-ssudio
Just say the word, oooh
Su-Su-ssudio
Uh ohh

[Ol' Dirty Bastard]
Let me continue, verse number two
Style is wild, Dirty stinkin' like doo-doo
If your hangin' around, you change your mind
If it's a bad influence, but yo it's my rhyme (my rhyme)
I sit down and I say to myself
Sell, yo, or you on the top, shelf
I drop this single for you, to get a dose of
As I lay back, like a pillow on a sofa
Gettin paid? Yeah, right, fully
My ass can be G one one one
You know me
My rhyme is sugar
Sweet as a honey bee
Tastes like a ??
Stinkin' like OE, yeah
Well I drink Old English
So I speak Old English
If not, I'd be dirty and stinking
And if not, well I guess I'm not
The A-S-O-N, my friend
You wouldn't understand

[Chorus:]

[Female singer]
If he calls me, I'll be there
I'll come running, anywhere
He's all I need, all my life
Feels so good if I just say the word
Su-Su-ssudio
Just say the word, oooh
Su-Su-ssudio
Uh ohh

If he calls me, I'll be there
I'll come running, anywhere
He's all I need, all my life
Feels so good if I just say the word
Su-Su-ssudio
Just say the word, oooh
Su-Su-ssudio
Uh ohh

If he calls me, I'll be there
I'll come running, anywhere
He's all I need, all my life
Baby
Su-Su-su-ssudio

Haven't heard it, but Phil Collins = Evil, spawn of Satan Dud.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 16 September 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get all this spawn of Satan stuff. What Phil Collins did in the 80s may not have been revolutionary but he was a competent exponent of one of the main things that happened in 80s pop, the fusion of R&B and rock. It's what Michael Jackson was doing, to some extent it was what Prince was doing (and to my ears Purple Rain is a bit a dirge, I might even consider Sussudio to be the better track). I won't say Collins was better than Prince, but I think 80s Collins stands up to 80s Michael Jackson pretty well. I think a lot of the venom Phil Collins attracts is to do with the fact that he's a balding, chubby, white middle-class English ex-progger, and not to do with his music.

fred shed, Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

*head explodes*

well i think in terms of production yes SOME of Collins stuff could hold a candle to SOME of Jackson's...'Easy Lover' and 'Beat It' hard to separate for example, and most people seem to agree 'Against All Odds' is a strong track. obviously Jacko was on a completely different planet in many other respects tho it's a funny comparison when you recall Collins mocking Jackson in the video for Genesis 'I Can't Dance'. otherwise you're otm.

stelfox, Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

In The Air Tonight is indeed classic, much better than Sussudio. It's not much like anything else Collins did though, its influences seem to be more New Wave, with the synths and nicking the drum sound from Bowie's Low etc.

Fred Shed, Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It is similar to 'Mama', which perhaps is a weirder song still.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sussudio" is top-notch mid-period Collins!!!! Cathy song, squelchy 80s keyboards, funny sounding drum machines, and Phil singer singing like someone's inserted his drumsticks up his rectum!!!!! He's even supressed his natural urge to go "AUGH-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!!" all over it, and restricts it to a couple of brief "Augh, augh!!"s near the end!!!!!!

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Reasons why venom is directed at Phil Collins:
1. Spends 98 albums moping about wife running away with builder then divorces second wife by fax
2. Tory shitehawk who threatened to leave Britain if Labour won the next election, and unlike Paui Daniels, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Frank Bruno and David Essex, actually did
3. That stupid criss-cross double thumbs-up routine he used to do with Genesis at the end of every number
4. His enunciation of the word "hotel" in the intro to "Separate Lives"
5. "Groovy Kind Of Bastard Love"
6. Buster
7. Cover of flop Dance Into The Light album officially recognised as most repulsive album cover in history
8. Ranted at Paul Morley because Richard Cook wrote in the NME that he looked at his wallet first before agreeing to play WOMAD in '82
9. First name isn't Derek.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

All of which goes to prove my point: people hate Collins because of the kind of person he is, not because of his music. So he's a self-absorbed prick who votes Tory? So was Ian Curtis. Why expect pop stars to be nice people? Artists generally aren't.

Fred Shed, Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember well the days when Phil was huge, and the very idea of him pisses me off for as many reasons (extra-musical and otherwise) as anyone, but I can grudgingly recognize a certain amount of talent in various of his works. (His huge drum sound, for instance, was pretty original & innovative, for better AND worse.) "Sussudio" ain't one of my favourites, but it sounded good in "American Psycho." I like the sporadic spastic-nail-gun chugging, and I admire Phil for inventing the nonsensical name "Sussudio" and using it for its rhythmic swing - and NOT attempting to rhyme it with anything.
Inventing words merely for the sake of rhyming is laziness, and the mark of a true hack. (Exception: Theodor Seuss Geisel, who basically invented the technique.)

I thought about polling NJR as I've discovered it in the last four years and think it an excellent album and fully deserved hit.

Listening to NJR is like being bludgeoned repeatedly around the head with an early club sandwich-sized mobile ‘phone.

Every beat has to be big, every introduction must herald yet another day off for Ferris Bueller.

It is oppressive; even listening to my elderly cassette copy at moderate volume inspired mild migraine – and I’m sure that was the intention, to batter any opposition into submission with its bigness, including the spectre of Collins himself, pictured on the inner sleeve, grimacing at the camera while wearing a suit at least two sizes too big for him (with frightful shoes).

Hahahahaha!! Excellent work!

I laughed at the last line too (and Collins' '85-'86 hair was a horror too). An excellent album though.
