Snoop Dogg - "Drop it Like It's Hot" (link to audio)

New single from his upcoming album in November... it's Neptunes produced (which is obvious after 1 second). This song is fun as hell. I wish he didn't have the Crips lyrics (a'la the P.I.M.P. remix), but the whole thing's pretty damned catchy. Any other thoughts?

uh...why do i have to register to listen to this?

frankE (frankE), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

They're working the spacious "Grindin'" vibe again, but it's all good.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it available anywhere else? I don't want to register for .rm song.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it's on slsk. the wife likes the "snooooooooooooooooooooooooooooop" and the smooooooooooooooooot delivery (what else to expect). kinda boring though.

meh. its not that great, the flow sounds really primitive, and the beats sound like they've been made with white noise and tongue-clicking.

Mediawhore, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry - didn't know about the resgistration thing. I got the MP3 off Catchdubs but thought I should give a legit link. Anyways, I like the white noise and tongue clicking! And I like that there's a little split second delay in the double vocal tracking of the "drop it like it's hot" part. I kind of wish the beat was used for a better song, because it's so goddamned catchy.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the best Snoop's sounded since _Doggystyle_.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit this is really fucking good.

Second coming of the Neptunes and shit.

Snoop sounds like he's been listening to nothing but Missy!

"Sittin in shoes/
Now I'm on the move/
your family's cryin'/
now you on the news/
they can't find you/
and now they miss you/
must i remind you?/
I'm only here to twist you."

I love this.

djdee2005, Thursday, 2 September 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

They're working the spacious "Grindin'" vibe again, but it's all good.

Its like it in that it's minimalist and predominantly percussive but the vibe of the song is almost entirely different.

djdee2005, Thursday, 2 September 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
This may end up being one of my top 20 singles this year I love it to def.

Even though I still think that Pharrell sucks gigantic donkey balls as a performer, I cannot deny that the beat to this song is completely kicking my head in. Monster track.

xpost "I kind of wish the beat was used for a better song, because it's so goddamned catchy."

Well, it's the Neptunes, kinda goes without saying... turd polishers par excellence.

Not that I hate everything they've done by a long stretch. I love Kelis (the singles, mainly), despise them for shitting all over large parts of Kaleidoscope mind you (ok. you are a unique production team, remind me just one more time of your working name however & I will smash the record into tiny pieces).

It wouldn't kill Snoop to have something to say though would it? Ever?

Ack.. I forget lazy gangster chic excused because he has killer flow on the mic. And it's just a party record. See also Dre etc.

I don't really get on with hip-hop much it must be said.

Taking stuff as abstract/mimimal as this into the charts though is quite something. I just have to grit my teeth pretty hard to give them their dues. Grr.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Just when I thought the 'tunes couldn't take that whole Clipse style any further. Not one for the ages or anything, no great lines, just a hot beat and a cool ass chorus. I love the way Snoop sounds like a record slowing down and speeding up, not to mention the whole delay thing mentioned above. I'd put it in the same category as that first Young Gunz single (which had a similar feel) -- good party song, makes you feel bad if you're grooving to it in your car.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

classic. i downloaded it nearly 2 months ago and it hasnt gotten old. even pharell's izzzzas don't bother me. hurting might be right that it is missing a great line from snoop. but really the music kinda obscures all the words for me anyway.

it's just a party record

i have read way too much stupid shit like this on ILM lately.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just a party record are you assuming I think this is a bad thing?

Still doesn't need the bullshit crips lyric though :X

latetotheparty (latetotheparty), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

saying it was just a party record read like a dismissal to me

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 18 November 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't :)

Especially when it comes to songs like this.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Nuthin wrong with a good party song.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

well party song or not I like to listen to it on repeat while sitting immobile in my chair

(ps has anyone heard Frontin' On Debra DJ reset mash-up featuring Beck, Jay-Z and Pharrel? I have this promo 12'' and its also a party)

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally wasn't feeling this song at first, but my sister got me into it by pointing out I should focus on Snoop's verses rather than all of the little sound-effects and shit.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitchfork have panned the album. Not that I'm trusting them or anything! Anyone else heard it yet?

haitch haitch haitch (or any three repetitive sounds) (haitch), Thursday, 18 November 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Heard a bit the other day. Like the Destiny's Child album, the single is totally unrepresentative of the rest of the album. It's mostly quite G-Funk in a very lazy way. I'm with Pitchfork to be honest.

Jason J, Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Pitchfork review is bogus becuase they are reviewing the leaked version of the album. The version in stores has a reshuffled tracklisting with about 9 tracks that weren't on the leaked version. "Stay" is NOT on the album. The Leaked Lil Jon song is not the same as the one on the album, etc.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the song. i esp love the mouth click and the snooooop-flute (or whatever you'd call it. the lyrics are totally ass, but it's all about texture.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally wasn't feeling this song at first, but my sister got me into it by pointing out I should focus on Snoop's verses rather than all of the little sound-effects and shit.

Wow, really? Me doing that would probably lead to me hating the song. I mean, it's one thing to ignore the lyrics in a track, but ignoring the lyrics coming from a voice is something I'm not too sure I can do. And you know, I dug Snoop's early "cheeky gangsta next door" phase, but everything after that just seemed to be "hey, I'm Snoop, and my voice is so damn pleasant that I really don't have to even pretend to put some effort into my lyrics". Which he's right about, but only when he has great beats behind him (thus his stuff with the Neps is almost always grebt.)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 18 November 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

mwah hah hah

I'm loving the album. Play me something better than "Ups & Downs", or "Let's Get Blown".

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a little sick of "Drop It" now though, as good as it is.

two years pass...
what drum machine did Pharrell use, i wonder

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

although i wince at my dorky enthusiasm this was a good single

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

ain't no fun if the dorks have none.
it was a great single.
his new album is pretty good too.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Most of his albums are 'pretty good' I think - its kind of funny how looking back i never expected him to have such a consistent career. The only one I really don't like is his first no limit album, but the two after that are pretty good and although I wasn't wild about "Chuuch to the Palace" that album has some moments too, like "Batman and Robin" where Robin is played by the Lady of Rage.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and the doggfather's not so good either

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

Same here. But I love how easily he made the transition from *the* new guy to elder statesman, as it were.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

guys, pharrell doesnt use drum machines. chad and he use samples in protools. sheesh.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't there some live drumming in some of their prod (not talking about nerd's second version of their first album) ?
like in a couple of JTs tracks.

I love there-at-the-scene, blast-from-the-past threads like this. Especially for: the beats sound like they've been made with white noise and tongue-clicking. OMG NO!!!!!

idk why because it never struck me this way before but the part where Pharrell says "You should think about it/take a second" and then it dings is actually really funny to me now. maybe it was supposed to be but I never giggled like I do now when I hear it
