VERY "c."

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

But one of the duddest band names ever.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

it makes me hungry. thats good enough for me.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Liked them better as Cactus.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"take me for a little while" = super classic

autovac (autovac), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

their cover of shotgun is all time 'C'.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all about "ticket to ride" 'round these parts.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a lot of Vanilla Fudge in the used vinyl racks of this here town. Where should one start?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the one that uses The Beat Goes On as a theme intrigues me the most.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

classic. i tried to fight it for a while, but then i learned to surrender myself to them, and we've been happier ever since.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to their first album recently, I felt that the version of "You Keep Me Hanging On" was the only compelling track.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 June 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

weren't they produced by shadow morton?

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 17 June 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed.

Tim Ellison, Friday, 18 June 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic.

one year passes...
i like the first album, but i have almost no desire to hear anything else they did.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Saturday, 18 March 2006 03:04 (twenty years ago)

i think that's a reasonable opinion. that said, first album is as C as C gets and probably the only heavy psych rock records my mom introduced me to (thanks mom!)

pyjamagrama (teenagequiet), Saturday, 18 March 2006 04:22 (twenty years ago)

You might want to experience The Beat Goes On, though, Ian.

i love the live album. bombast up the wazoo.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 29 May 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

That was great, Tim. Thanks.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 29 May 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

The Psychedelic Sundae collection looks pretty good. It's got all the early non-LP single tracks. These were the first four singles:

You Keep Me Hangin'On / Come By Day, Come By Night
(ATCO 6590) 1967
Eleanor Rigby / Ticket To Ride
(ATCO 4516) 1967
Where Is My Mind / Look Of Love
(ATCO 6554) 1968
Take Me For A Little While / Thoughts
(ATCO 6616) 1968

Please remember to vote for YKMHO (both versions, even) in the 60s poll.

When I was in college, someone brought one of their albums home and I puked. Always hated their sound. But look at the covers they do!

would read a serious academic/biographical investigation into the fudge tbh

the hackishness of these guys is just prodigious, just stunning. i am endlessly fascinated.

It's amazing how quickly they became influential: Deep Purple (debut '68) and Yes (debut '69) cited them as catalysts of their sounds, and Grand Funk's take on "Inside Looking Out" owes more to the Fudge than Hendrix, Blue Cheer Cream etc.

Also amazing & lol: Wilson Pickett copping the VF arrangement of "You Keep Me Hangin' On":

...and then Rod Stweart doing the same (w/Appice in tow) about 8 years later:

Opening act on Vanilla Fudge's first tour: Led Zeppelin

My band from my university years gave Neil Young's "Lotta Love" the Vanilla Fudge treatment and it worked out suprisingly well.

Just heard Cactus for the first time and they're pretty great. Not sure if Appice is as good as Bonham was but he sure loves the triplets and has a great groove.
