Classic, right?

RIGHT?

I am going to start wearing my op ivy shirt again.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Saturday, 12 June 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no, horrible memories of unsuitable women!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Saturday, 12 June 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, i wear mine with CAMOSHORTZ

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Saturday, 12 June 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

d-u-d-d DUD!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 12 June 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I like select tracks like "Healthy Body, Sick Mind" and "Sound System," but they could never sustain my interest for too long. Also, dud for all the crappy bands they inspired.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 12 June 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Wonderful memories of unsuitable punker girls!

I barely remember what they sounded like, but the album on Lookout mostly bored me to death. "Unity" and "Sound System" were pretty good, as was the first Suicide Machines album, where they just ripped off the good parts of OpIvy.

all i know is that i don't know nothin'

pretty classic if yr fifteen

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 12 June 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the better ska classics, but who listens to any ska after 1983 who isn't in a ska band that will soon kick out their horn players to go all punky?

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Saturday, 12 June 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My 13 year-old mind thought this was the greatest thing it had ever heard.

Debito (Debito), Saturday, 12 June 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I reckon roger and debito are otm. I haven't listened to that album since I was in high school, but man, that was really the shit back then. Now I guess it'd be more nostalgia than anything else.

OCP (OCP), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

jessie michaels dad was my favorite fiction worship professor ever! he died last year. for this reason alone OpIvy get a pass.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

My 13 year-old mind thought this was the greatest thing it had ever heard.

-- Debito, June 12th, 2004.

Same here, but some of their songs still rock.
Search: Knowledge, Soundsystem, Missionary, Here We Go Again, Artificial Life
Destroy: that fucking song about jumping in bushes, I can't remember what its called. (just remembered: Hedgecore. Destroy Hedgecore.)

They did have lots of dumb songs, inspired horrible bands, and losers wear their t-shirt, but damned if I don't still have a soft spot for them.

Zach Ayres (Z_Ayres), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

They're great for what they were. I say classic (I'm not gonna judge a band for their shit imitators).

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 12 June 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

if this band continues to sound good after 16 you probably took a serious wrong turn somewhere

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 June 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

if only Vin had got his rap career off the ground in the 80s.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 13 June 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely Jon's recent R'lyeh name-change implies a fondness for Call of Cthulhu? GURPS freaks me the fuck out. Also Op Ivy > The Clash.

XTC > TEH CLASH

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Sunday, 13 June 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember going to SMASH in D.C. and buying a Specials t-shirt, a Bosstones t-shirt, and an Operation Ivy t-shirt. Then I bought some ox-blood docs.

Does any of this mean anything to a 13 year-old today?

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 13 June 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the Specials invented ska -- or was it Madness?

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 13 June 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

less than jake invented ska in 1994

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Sunday, 13 June 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad we cleared that up.

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 13 June 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

actually it was save ferris who created it in a lab while collaborating with goldfinger. the first few tries looked like the aborted ripley clones from alien resurrection.

i think its "only a description, just an observation, of the pitiful condition"

wow this was my favorite band in 9th grade. i dont think i listened to anything else for about two and a half months. and i havent returned since.

max (maxreax), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

apparently Rancid is now finally doing Op Ivy songs on their current tour

two years pass...

classic.

I have been listening to Op Ivy lately which is something I haven't done since H.S. when I pretty much listened to them every single morning on the bus for my entire senior year. I think it still holds up for what it was and it's good spring/summer listening. <3

EN Save-A-Ken BB (ENBB), Saturday, 4 April 2009 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

i like op ivy, but man o man, i was irritated in high school by the neverending parade of op ivy t-shirts. in mid-90s southern california they were standard issue. that and bad religion t-shirts. not sure if the people who wore them even owned the albums.

tylerw, Saturday, 4 April 2009 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha. First band shirt I ever bought and yeah, that was in the mid-90s but on LI. In my girls catholic HS though I was the only one.

EN Save-A-Ken BB (ENBB), Saturday, 4 April 2009 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i think it was a weird regional phenomenon ... like at some point kids graduated from offspring/green day shirts to op ivy and bad religion. and then maybe pennywise/NOFX. and then sublime/bob marley.

tylerw, Saturday, 4 April 2009 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

classic, but the moment Brad Nowell heard them and went "y'know, I think I can do this too", Tim Armstrong shoulda sent him in a pane of glass into outer space

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 August 2011 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

whatever, dude

this album is great tho ive been revisiting it lately & surprisingly still so great

uh oh whats your fantasy (flopson), Sunday, 7 August 2011 07:54 (fourteen years ago)

"Take Warning" is awesome

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 August 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

Classic, and I agree with the folks upthread saying they fit almost perfectly when you're in your mid-teens. Prone to digging out the odd song during fits of nostalgia still.

TFW you listen to the Op Ivy S/T again for the first time in a few years, and open this thread to find your 17 y-o self rolling his eyes at your 13 y-o self. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is the true core, heart music. Should we poll this?
