Is this new? Isn't this type of offer a cash-grab for organization desperate for money (why charity arts orgs often do it)?

Just got a subscription renewal card in the mail--the old 24 issues a year plan was <$40, the new one for 12 issues is $90.
Good Luck With That!

Thread title sounds like a threat.

It kind of is. I don't have that deal, obviously, but thanks to some piggybacked Amazon freebie trial subs I got in '07, I've been a regular subscriber. I got a postcard today announcing the price hike, and that to not be charged, i have to unsubscribe either online or by phone by TOMORROW. Their customer service site is down rn, and there's at least a 20 minute wait on the phone just because of this shit.
I wager the print edition won't see out the year.

Rolling Stone magazine has been shit since i've been reading it (1987). Surely the only people left who care are publicists and desperate writers.

CANCELLED!
https://fortune.com/2024/06/05/rolling-stone-subscription-lifetime/
In early May, lifetime subscribers received a letter from David Roberson, the magazine’s senior vice president of subscriptions, stating that “we are transitioning the delivery of Rolling Stone’s lifetime subscribers to a digital format. Your final printed copy will be the June 2024 issue.” While the magazine will continue printing physical editions of the magazine, current subscribers, including those who purchased the $99-for-life deal, will now receive digital copies unless they explicitly choose a print subscription, which costs $60 per year.

IIRC, I was on hold for an hour and I then spent all of 45 seconds with the rep cancelling the subscription.
Well, I was wrong about that.
