Has Anyone Heard It Yet?
Is It Good?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's stereolab. it sounds like... stereolab.

mc (mcutt), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

so no one wants to answer this?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

is that a good or bad thing?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm listening to it now for the first time, it's good so far. do you like Stereolab? If so you'll like it, probably. It is missing Mary though.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It's my favorite album of release of theirs since Dots And Loops, if not Refried Ectoplasm. Never gets annoying like Emperor Tomato Ketchup did and just went I'm starting to get bored a really nice unexpected new beat or hook comes along. I'm impressed that these guys have staged a comeback - I really assumed they'd be a shit factory from here on out.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i have Dots & Loops and Emperor Tomato Ketchup. I Really Like Them Both.

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

you will like this one.

It doesn't have any of the jazzy instrumentation that Sound Dust had, which is good; I really like Sound Dust but they didn't need to make it again. This one reminds me more of Dots and Loops than any of the other records (I like Dots and Loops, I know others don't). It's pretty poppy.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"feel and triple" sounds like Yes.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't but I do like this one quite a bit. It's a bit like the Cocteau Twins at this point, Stereolab is -- another single, another album, yay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Pitchfork review I did of it. Basically, the deal is, I like this period of Stereolab, and this album is good even if I kind of already knew what I was in for.

dleone (dleone), Saturday, 24 January 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a little surprised by how much I am enjoying this. These may be their best songs since ETK, some great guitar work (which has been buried for so long).

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
This is one of the only Stereolab releases I don't have, along with Sound Dust. What does Margerine sound closer to: the earlier Transient era or the later Cobra era? While I like everything the band has put out (Emperor Tomato Ketchup is by far my least favorite release of theirs, oddly enough), Dots & Loops and Cobra... are probably my two favorite releases. Also, what's the general consensus on this album? I haven't heard much talk since it came out.

Christian, Saturday, 9 July 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, I acquired a copy of this when it came out but still haven't knowingly heard more than that single. This is not particularly noteworthy except that the 'Lab sustained the younger indie-schmindie me through much of the nineties. I'm not sure what this means.

Good to see someone else on the "D&L/Cobra > ETK" wagon though. : )

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 9 July 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

I've never felt any great compulsion to listen to it since the initial period of wearing it in. It's a good album, but they consistently put good albums out. I don't think they've made a grotesque misstep in the last ten years or so, at least not where their albums are concerned, so it'd have to be thoroughly excellent for me to muster up great enthusiasm. Some very nice stuff on it, though - "La Demeure" and "The Man With 100 Cells" come to mind.

Deluxe (Damian), Saturday, 9 July 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Eclipse is an odd one. I found it more readily accessible than Sound-Dust(which took me months of on-off listening to really "get"), but somehow I don't feel compelled to revisit it very often. It has the feeling of being a "getting back into the groove" album for the band, to get them used to the idea of carrying on as a Mary-less group. As such, it occasionally lapses into Stereolab-by-numbers territory, but there's nothing really wrong with the album. It just seems to drift by without making much of an impression.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Saturday, 9 July 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

This is one of the only Stereolab releases I don't have, along with Sound Dust...
-- Christian (sonicyouth...), July 9th, 2005.

I really loved margerine eclipse although like someone already mentioned, I knew what to expect. for me, that didnt stop me from thoroughly enjoying it.
I highly reccommend Sound Dust as well, I didn't find it iniaccessible at all & Long Life Love is one of my favorite tracks of theirs.

vanessa novaeris (novaeris), Saturday, 9 July 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Fore me, Margerine as a whole doesn't seem up there with the greats. Although along with the Instant O EP and the tour EP there is a batch of fantastic tracks;

Jaunty Monty And The Bubbles Of Silence
Sudden Stars
Mass Riff
University Microfilms International
Banana Monster Ne Répond Plus
Margerine Rock
Margerine Melodie

Also, word to Christian ... As for albums I'd much sooner recommend Sound Dust. Frustrated me at first, but after a few listens, started to get it and really, really enjoy it. Not really a continuation of 'Cobra' -- it's completely different. I consider it one of the best.

vonal declosion is one of the best songs i've ever heard

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:28 (six years ago)

I’m obsessed with the opening moments, particularly the way the tracks are mixed.

afriendlypioneer, Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:29 (six years ago)

The 1-2-3 punch to start the album is god tier

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:04 (six years ago)

honestly one of my top stereolab albums

global tetrahedron, Saturday, 8 February 2020 20:10 (six years ago)

About 15 years ago I went through a ridiculous project of going through my digital music collection and deleting every track I didn't love, Margerine Eclipse was one of maybe five LPs where I didnt delete a single track.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 8 February 2020 20:19 (six years ago)

Davey D, Saturday, 8 February 2020 23:42 (six years ago)

Put it on this morning, motivated by this thread, still top 5 Stereolab and a scintillating delight.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Saturday, 8 February 2020 23:46 (six years ago)

The recent 2 disc cd version is the best of the recent reissues to pick up on cd and play as loud as possible. Sounds like it's playing right inside your head at times.

everything, Sunday, 9 February 2020 01:28 (six years ago)

I hear the dual mono recording means you can listen to one channel or the other and get two different stripped-down versions of the album. That sounds pretty neat, but I'm too lazy to try and hear it that way (no balance control on my receiver).

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Sunday, 9 February 2020 18:55 (six years ago)

Pretty easy with headphones or ear buds

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 9 February 2020 19:11 (six years ago)

I'd go half crazy with just one earbud in

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Sunday, 9 February 2020 19:27 (six years ago)

You can do it, I believe in you

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 9 February 2020 21:02 (six years ago)

contort the geometric chaos. the outro of "dear marge" ranks tall among lab jam moments

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 10 February 2020 03:45 (six years ago)

could load up a ripped copy into Audacity and just create two separate sets of MP3s... left channel mixed to stereo, right channel mixed to stereo

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 10 February 2020 04:15 (six years ago)

xp such a jam, the bass is delicious

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 10 February 2020 10:47 (six years ago)

'Feel and Triple' has gotten me misty eyed once or twice. Only Stereolab song I can say that about.

I have been getting into this band very slowly, just discovered this record and uhh it might be the best Stereolab record I've heard yet? Every track is killer but man, what an opener. Crazy because I kinda remember this being considered a disappointment at the time. This is the only one I have from the period between Doots & Loops and the new one, are any of the other records this good?

frogbs, Friday, 20 March 2026 14:58 (two months ago)

i remember Cobra Phases getting really destroyed in Pitchfork, which probably colored my memory of its overall reception, but I think that one is just incredible. Sound Dust is good. Chemical Chords is good. I don't think they ever released a bad record tbh.

omar little, Friday, 20 March 2026 16:02 (two months ago)

I hated Cobra Phases at first. I came back to it years later and now I love it. The jazziest Stereolab.

Cow_Art, Friday, 20 March 2026 16:05 (two months ago)

both cobra and sound-dust are both good and worth hearing. i think margerine eclipse is my favorite post-emperor album of theirs

Margerine Eclipse is the one. Did you not read my RYM review? :P

imago, Friday, 20 March 2026 16:10 (two months ago)

Yeah if you feel this way about Margarine Eclipse you'll like all of the post-2000 albums. Perfect example of a run of albums so consistently good that people started to get bored & underrate them at the time.

I have now :)

frogbs, Friday, 20 March 2026 17:25 (two months ago)

Loving to see the Margerine love, such a wonderful record. Echoing other sentiments here: Sound-Dust and Cobra and Phases are your next stops, both incredible records. Fab Four Sutre is a step down but still plenty to love there as well.

Davey D, Friday, 20 March 2026 17:31 (two months ago)

The bass playing/bass sound is the best I have heard on a Stereolab album. Bought the CD in Neuss when it came out.

OutdoorFish, Friday, 20 March 2026 18:13 (two months ago)

Check out Sound-Dust. I like it even better. :) The production and instrumentation are just gorgeous.

KevRus, Friday, 20 March 2026 19:17 (two months ago)

i was fortunate enough to pick up all of the 3 LP reissues from several years ago, they were especially revelatory w/r/t their taken-for-granted era. really sublime stuff throughout.

omar little, Friday, 20 March 2026 20:07 (two months ago)

thanks for the recs everyone...sounds like Sound Dust will be next :)

frogbs, Friday, 20 March 2026 20:45 (two months ago)

Double Rocker is overwhelmingly beautiful

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 20 March 2026 20:51 (two months ago)

I prefer Sound-Dust over Margerine Eclipse, but it's very different, much greater emphasis on acoustic instruments and pretty, jazzy atmospherics. I like the double mono concept for Margerine Eclipse, but it tends toward being overly busy and the drums in particular sound very thin and skittery to me.

whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Friday, 20 March 2026 20:56 (two months ago)

sound-dust is perhaps their most 'easy-listening' and also their most reich-esque, it's wonderful
