Some of the Toto stuff for dune is great (thx for the reminder, I'd actually forgotten about that one) But this is no contest, really. Vangelis ownz. That little bit where you see the cityscape, and there's this CS80 lead, which swoops down in pitch - man, I'm getting the shivers just thinking about it.

the dune soundtrack may be more evenly matched with queen's effort for flash gordon (they're both great!).

i'm also quite into wendy carlos' work on tron.

Never heard the "Dune" score, but cannot imagine it being better than Vangelis' seamlessly perfect score to "Blade Runner". This opinion is grounded in the irrefutable fact that the film "Dune", if we're discussing the Lynch incarnation, was a rancid dollop of tepid, runny crap.

If I recall correctly, their contributions were separate...but work well together.

By the way, I agree with those who mentioned John Carpenter's Escape From New York soundtrack (it ownz, indeed), but it WASN'T part of the equation.

I think the incidental music was all Toto, but the opening and closing credits themes are all Eno compositions.

The Toto on the "dune" soundtrack is poss more the Toto who had every advanced Yamaha synthesiser something like 6 months before anyone else had even heard of it. I'll have to hunt a copy out if poss (at one point this was like total unobtanium, is it actually available in some tangible form?)

Apparently the original idea for Dune was that it would be directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky (Holy Mountain, El Topo, Santa Sangre etc). He wanted each of the four planets in the film to be scored by a different rock band, two of whom would be Magma and Pink Floyd - I don't know who he had in mind for the other two, but I'd wager that Toto weren't even in the running.

How did Lynch come up with the idea to recruit Toto, fer chrissakes?
Dino DeLaurentiis demanded it.
The same way he demanded Queen for Flash Gordon.
I think Lynch hired Eno though. And after most of the music duties were handed over to Toto, Lynch had one more -- of a hundred -- reasons to finally give up on the movie.
Hence why it's directed by "Alan Smithee"

Risky Business is quite odd for a mainstream Hollywood movie, the Tangerine Dream soundtrack merely emphasizes it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Assault on Precinct 13 soundtrack (at least the stuff you hear during the actual movie) consist mostly of a few long, drony synth melodies? It's sounds quite good, but not like Autechre to me.

Opera sauvage is the best, yeah. Antarctica is also there among his best soundtrack work, the main theme especially is the most gorgeous thing he's written.

But obviously the best soundtrack of all time is Geinoh Yamashirogumi's, for Akira.
