surf guitar - greater than the sum of "surf" & "guitar"!

Trashmen - "Surfin' Bird" (the ILM consensus pick!)
Dick Dale - "Miserlou" (deservedly overexposed!)
The Clean - "At The Bottom (Live)" (gothic surf rock!)
Pixies - "Wave Of Mutilation" (okay this probably isn't the surfiest Pixies track but m4rc3l still has all my pixies albums, etc)
Man . . . Or Astroman? - "Invasion Of The Dragonmen" (saw them live!)
Girls Aloud - "Sound Of The Underground" (out of the blue!)

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Surfaris - "Wipeout" (best hysterical laugh evah!)

I haven't heard much by the Beach Boys, but I suspect they don't count.

Has any hip-hop/r'n'b/nu-pop sampled surf guitars (other than "Sound Of The Underground")? & it seemed like it would fit in with early ardkore but I haven't heard any examples.

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Devo, "Secret Agent Man"
Big Black, "Pavement Saw"
Midnight Oil, "Wedding Cake Island"

Surf guitar is probably the reason I like the Clean & the Pixies much much more than their non-surf contemporaries.

This thread makes me feel guilty for not having heard anything by King Loser. I'm indifferent to, uh, the guy that does that klemzer-surf whatever (y'know, the one with that Peter Plumley-Walker based album).

Travis Wammack - Firefly

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"Cecilia Ann" is maybe the most traditional surf song by the Pixies, although the first letter in each line of "Ana" spells out "SURFER." So there's that.

Hammy (hammy), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

ana really has that sort of surf-y ballad feel to it. i'd group havalina in this camp, too.

jq higgins, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Rockefeller Skank" used a surf guitar sample didn't it?

Surf guitars do indeed rool.

Dick Dale - "LET'S GO TRIPPIN'" is unreal -- the gurgly tone he gets, had to be an influence on Jerry Garcia.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's a MOAM? song it has to be "A Mouthful of Exhaust"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

if your going to talk sadies, you prolly have to throw calexico in to the mix, though their not really surf-y, burns' guitar style is pretty surf/twangy.

higgins, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

yes.

I am pleased to state that The Lonely Surfer, by Jack Nitzsche, is sooooo beautiful, it transcends the surf guitar format altogether.
