you know, like the different kinds of effects you can run audio through to change what it sounds like. Also, which do you think have been used the best/worst historically, and give examples!

Search: compression. It's like audio MSG; it's hard to put into words how it changes a sound ("it makes things sound, uh, cleaner....um, more compact??") but it does make things tastier (I've always loved how songs that are compressed like hell sort of tickle your ears like they're about to explode). Ex: The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star (natch)

Yeah, me too. I've noticed that I ususally like it when it's used to make things sound cool and hate it when people use it as a play for irony. Like, yeah, yeah, we get it, NO YOU ARE NOT COOL AND YOUR SATIRE IS WEAK AND STUPID.

i will not back down about this vocoder bullshit!!

every fucking pop, country, whatever band is using it. that last madonna track, the 007 soundtrack thing. UGH! and now there's an HBO commercial song that is a straight rip off of that song. and on the Disney channel (I DON'T GIVE A FUCK THAT I WATCH THE DISNEY CHANNEL) has a show w/the little girl (who's now more of a big girl) from the Cosby show called That's So Raven. and she uses that damn effect and i want to barf.

Search: reverb including well-used gate reverb, wah pedal when used as phaser, chorus when used for planky early Cure / Peter Hook guitar sound, tremelo especially on certain vocals, delay that's actually global on an instrument and not inserted on dramatic phrases.

Destroy: wah pedal used as wah pedal except on certain funk organs, digital distorion, octave addition, the psychedelic watery-flange except in really limited circumstances, over-groomed delay, U2-style guitar delay-riding.

are tape delay / analogue delays really that good and really that expensive? (haha my flatmate says 'yeh, £1000, i swear your face off' but i think he's lying). do i really need one really?

The only actual genuine analogue delays I'm aware of that you can buy new are the blacet time machine which isn't too expensive (I mean I have one, so it can't be) and the modcan super delay which is a bit dearer, but has a higher bandwidth apparently. I have some modcan modules, but not this one. The Blacet unit does an awesome dub delay, among other things. There was a Moogerfooger unit, but it was a limited edition, and I believe it's sold out now. These are all genuine analogue, but solid state (IE they use a BBD chip) units. I have no idea if anyone's making a tape delay these days, but the old eighties roland units are well thought of, and sometimes are available at a reasonable price - "Space Echo" and "Chorus Echo" are the model names. Personally I wouldn't buy a tape delay, b/c I am a lazy fux0r who can't be assed w/changing the tape loop, demagging the heads etc. I did all that shit w/reel-to-reel m/cs in the past, and I don't ant to go back there coz it's a drag.

The line 6 modelled delay units, available in pedal or rack format are supposed to be good and reasonably cheap, and are reported to do quite a convincing sim of the old analogue delay sound. Probably worth demoing a unit if you can.

yes, they're still making tape delays! I did a search for them about a year ago and found, I think, two companis that still make them. I's sorry to say I don't have the websites so you're on your own.

I used to use the Multi-vox tape echo. It eventually broke down/became unreliable but it was a lot of fun. It had a built in spring reverb. These things, a couple years back, were going for about 250 on ebay.

I recently got a Roland Space Echo tape delay/reverb unit and had to clean it up a little bit and hunt down tape reels for it. The sound is fantastic though, its incredibly fun to play with, it's a strange, almost organic, experience to manipulate it. I would like to figure out how to slow the tape speed motor down so that some of the settings would allow longer delay times, but the schematic I have is a little too labyrynthine for me to figure out how to do it. I will say that this unit is infinitely different from dealing with standard digital delay pedals, the sound, the feedback, the level of flexibility is all different. I highly recommend it!
