New Goldfrapp Single

been trying to find 'Train' on slsk but no joy - wanna hear this almost as much as Broadcast's new one

i kinda like it - its a grower i think, and its a love it or loathe it one too - it sounds quite different from what i've heard of them - i love Alison's voice...i'm still listening to the Tom Middleton mix of 'Utopia' all the time

I like Black Cherries. It's a lot sexier than Felt Mountain. Quite elecro sounding. That said I don't think it's anything really special. I still prefer Felt Mountain.

Previously I'd thought of them as a stopgap Portishead. They'd do, but only till the real thing came along. Now they've raised their game and the followers are now leaders.

It's a good song, but I'm sad to find Goldfrapp playing catch-up instead of leading the way. Ned sez "retroironicrediscovery"... sounds about right.

I like it. I don't mind that it's behind the curve, as this particular sound (reminds me of Cosmos "Take Me With You" a bit, though not as amazing obv) doesn't really age for me.

I like this! I'd describe it as 80s Menudo + Van Halen's "Jump". Love the cheap-sounding bass!

I've always thought Goldfrapp (although wonderful) aren't usually very good at doing "catchy" (that's why Supernature didn't work for me). Fortunately, this is definitely an exception. I'm also relieved they've ditched the "pastoral" thing TBH.

I'm a big fan of their last album, I liked how they did the whole folksy psychedelic thing, but still managed to sound completely modern.

I wouldn't say that I dislike "Rocket", but I feel slightly disappointed that they are so slavishly reproducing the 80s vibe without bothering to update it or add anything new.

Still buying the new album though...

I still like the first album best, they're very good the wintery John Barry thing. Rocket's nice enough, maybe not so much that I'll acquire the album legally without sampling a few more tracks first.

That's a stunning cover. If I had no idea who Goldfrapp was, I'd buy that album based on the cover alone.

Sounds like a Miami Horror remix of "One Day" by Juan MacLean etc which is a very good thing.

I'm hoping (based on the album art etc.) that this is less just post-electroclash/Gaga-for-Guardian-readers/"lol 80s" and more specifically a kind of technicolour synth-disco affair, a diva-pop equiv to The Avalanches' "A Different Feeling".

Absolutely, I'm hoping that the Ewan Pearson Disco Odyssey remix of 'Ride a White Horse' is the template for this.

So now "Believer" is out there, and it's even less interesting than "Rocket." I'm not giving up yet, because history proves some of the best Goldfrapp tracks are the deep cuts as opposed to the singles, but... ehhh.

Felt Mountain is my favourite. "Deer Stop" is gorgeous.

I tyhi k the second half of this is better. The first half is more or less divided between stompers and chillers, whereas the songs on the second sound like they have a folk attitude compositionally, and an electro one in terms of arrangement.

Second half of this is great, starting with the aforementioned amazing "Faux Suede Drifter".

Really loving the whole thing. It is two halves like chap mentions, and I think "Become The One" and "Everything is Never Enough" are epic stompers on each respective side. "Ocean" is a powerful frazzled closer that perfectly wraps back around to "Anymore".

Strongly suggest finding a way to listen to this on a good set of headphones. Love how this sounds.

Tickets just went on sale here for their Vancouver show. Anyone catching them on this tour? Last time I saw them was Black Cherry era and it was one of the best shows I've been to

A handful of plays on, I feel the production and arrangements on Silver Eye are probably their best, but perhaps the songwriting isn't quite up to scratch? There seems to be a lack of gorgeous melodies and memorable hooks compared to earlier work. Still a rich, enjoyable listen, and I appreciate they were probably going for more of a textured ambient experience with this one, at least in the back half.

Seeing them tonight, anyone else catch this tour? Seems the setlist has been pretty static with the exception of "Black Cherry" (!!)

I still love Silver Eye, but perhaps not as much as Supernature, Black Cherry or Head First.

Turrican, you would love this tour. Setlist was largely Supernature, and the band closed with an extended mix of "Strict Machine" (very similar to the We are Glitter mix). Nothing from Head First at this show though "Dreaming" and "Shiny and Warm" have been played on this tour.

i saw them open for New Order and it was pretty mesmerizing. and I had NO IDEA Alison Goldfrapp is 51 years old.

Moodles, Seventh Tree is definitely one of my favourites, the inverse of Tales of Us and includes probably one of their best tracks, "Eat Yourself". No songs from Tree or Tales on this tour, the band's trajectory is mostly dancefloor elevation

Seventh Tree is underrated, even if it's not the side of Goldfrapp I prefer.

Nope. One of my favourite albums full stop. Seeing her in Glasgow on Halloween and looking forward to a bigger dancier vibe tho

I’m liking the production on the last one but find it a bit lacking tune-wise

The slower tracks on Silver Eye are quite similar to Goldfrapp bsides ("Bodo" w/ Pale 3 is akin to "Faux Suede Drifter" for example). Or they're an amalgamation of Black Cherry/Tales Of Us style, like on "Beast That Never Was". But yeah not so sure about the more upbeat ones, they're not as tuneful as anything on Supernature/Black Cherry.

On a side note, Goldfrapp are pure fire live, and very heavy (largely in part to their excellent bassist and 3 female keyboardists). They're quite different on record though.

Chalk me up also in the Tales Of Us best album camp, no question. Seems weird you can't buy the accompanying film as it's a lovely thing and even had a (limited) cinema release.

Also seems mad they never released their Medea music either

I've enjoyed all their albums, but Black Cherry, Tales Of Us and Seventh Tree are their three masterpieces for me. I have a hard time picking between Tales Of Us and Seventh Tree.

Supernature is their masterpiece, IMO. Excellent synthpop.

Number One and Ride a White Horse destroyed the crowd live, it's definitely the peak of their synthpop exrcusions

also Supernature has the beguiling "Time Out from the World" and "Let It Take You"

I just love the way the album sounds - it's really smooth and shiny. The artwork could not represent the contents any better!

bump, this is really good! not everything is amazing but there's some really great stuff on here. the grooves are huge, expensive ass digital plug ins making everything sound like glitter waterfalls. the songs are classy, occasionally brilliant, some a little forgettable. but a super friendly / inviting listen overall.

I like this as much as black cherry and the other pop album (head on? Or whatever), maybe more TBH.

It's probably my least favourite of theirs, but it's still good. It's in the category of their lesser albums along with Supernature and Head First.

They do seem to be incapable of making bad albums and I hope they come back soon.

Hmm, I would put it in the top tier. Strikes a pretty good balance between their dual tendencies, which I find grating when taken to the extreme (7th Tree, Head First).

A couple singles out now from the next Alison Goldfrapp album Flux, coming August 15. I thought the first solo album might be just a one-off, but it seems like this is what she's doing now. Can't complain, she's sounding good!
