New Goldfrapp Single

For any fans of Goldfrapp, here's a peek of the new single sleeve.... and after the gorgeous sleeves they've had in the past - how nasty is this one? Far too clever and ironic for its own good
http://www.findesieclemedia.com/blackcherry.jpg

I've heard the single once.... not too sold on it first time... anyone else here heard it?

russ t, Thursday, 27 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh I thought black cherry was the album title. am excited about this LP

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit - you're right, it is.... the single's called Train.... fuck - what a bad album sleeve, then!

russ t, Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

it looks like somebody's first attempt on b3ta. no woos or yays from me

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont think the sleeve is THAT bad - i've dabbled with deliberately bad Photoshop cut-around before, its quite a funny ironic technique

been trying to find 'Train' on slsk but no joy - wanna hear this almost as much as Broadcast's new one

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

...there was a snippet of it on a Radio 1 website, but it's gone now. I'll keep searching, too....

russ t, Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

you can hear it on the Breezeblock from last Monday which is archived online on the radio 1 website

i kinda like it - its a grower i think, and its a love it or loathe it one too - it sounds quite different from what i've heard of them - i love Alison's voice...i'm still listening to the Tom Middleton mix of 'Utopia' all the time

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 February 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

the album is ok. nowhere near as Jools Hollandy, coffee tabley, Mercury Music Prizey, Jo Whileyey as i expected.

Wyndham Earl, Thursday, 27 February 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Wyndham...
how did you get the album? I have a friend at Mute and even THEY haven't been given any copies yet....?

russ t, Friday, 28 February 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Black Cherry LP is fucking blinding. Been playing it all weekend - it sounds great on a dark, deserted motorway at 100mph. Volume up to 11, natch.

j0e (j0e), Sunday, 9 March 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I had the album last week.
It's crushingly disappointing.
Lumpen, ugly production and samey nondescript songs.
Shame - it should've been a brilliant record.

russ t, Monday, 10 March 2003 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i trust both j0e's AND Russ' opinions on this new release

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 March 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard the album last night; it's certainly different than "Felt Mountain"; less haunting, more uptempo. I was kind of feverish when I heard it, so I'll have to play it again, but it sounded promising.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

'Train' and 'Hairy Trees' are both bloody marvellous i have now decided after fresh listens - possibly the best tracks on the album but i've not heard it all yet, great stuff tho

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

As I'm saying on the "Order of Things", I'm nuts for the new Goldfrapp. And far from being coffee-tabley, the album is suprising in how it dares to be tackier, more abrasive, and more poppy than expected.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Album sleeve was done in a traditional (paper and glue) cut and paste manner by Alison. They hired the wolves to photograph, excepted only two and then a van load turned up. Ms Goldfrapp was so overwhelmed by all the barking/ smell/ rocking van that she burst into tears.

I like Black Cherries. It's a lot sexier than Felt Mountain. Quite elecro sounding. That said I don't think it's anything really special. I still prefer Felt Mountain.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 24 March 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i hope there's a video, its important! i still havent seen the video for 'Pilots' properly and i think i need to see Alison on screen more, ideally 'Train' would be a pastiche of the 'Lets Get Physical' video but i'm sure she's tired of the Olivia Neutron-Bomb thing already

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

The 'Human' video was amazing - quite pervy and voyeuristic (Alison playing the snooping chambermaid).
The Pilots video's just OK. She looks lovely in it, though.
I think there'll definitely be a video for 'Train' - I reckon it's going to be a pretty big single.

russ t, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh it'll be 'in with a bullet' at number 44 in the charts - absolutely no airplay on daytime radio i suspect (maybe from Sara Cox and Jo Whiley if they're feeling sporty) which is a shame, i would like it if it was a hit but i guess it doesnt really matter. look forward to the video, i bet it will be directed by Dawn Shadforth tho they really need Gondry on the case here.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I rarely listen to the radio, but I've heard Train twice now. I think it could be the one to break them.
In more ways than one.

russ t, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer the Ewan Pearson remixes, you know...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I've already dreamed up a video for "Twist" that's been on pretty heavy rotation in my head for the last few days; the new album really is great.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolutely fantastic, it will be a massive hit. It's like Fischerspooner getting roughed up by Marianne Faithfull. When I heard it on the radio yesterday it was the first record this year I've stopped and waited to see who made it.

Previously I'd thought of them as a stopgap Portishead. They'd do, but only till the real thing came along. Now they've raised their game and the followers are now leaders.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

Oh, might as well revive this thread since:

It sounds exactly as you might guess it would sound based on that cover.

Expect remixes from Richard X, Tiesto, Grum and Penguin Prison.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

It's a good song, but I'm sad to find Goldfrapp playing catch-up instead of leading the way. Ned sez "retroironicrediscovery"... sounds about right.

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 22 January 2010 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

I like it. I don't mind that it's behind the curve, as this particular sound (reminds me of Cosmos "Take Me With You" a bit, though not as amazing obv) doesn't really age for me.

Tim F, Friday, 22 January 2010 12:13 (sixteen years ago)

The Man has got involved, can't find anywhere to listen to this.

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Friday, 22 January 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

I like this! I'd describe it as 80s Menudo + Van Halen's "Jump". Love the cheap-sounding bass!

I've always thought Goldfrapp (although wonderful) aren't usually very good at doing "catchy" (that's why Supernature didn't work for me). Fortunately, this is definitely an exception. I'm also relieved they've ditched the "pastoral" thing TBH.

one boob is free with one (daavid), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

I'm a big fan of their last album, I liked how they did the whole folksy psychedelic thing, but still managed to sound completely modern.

I wouldn't say that I dislike "Rocket", but I feel slightly disappointed that they are so slavishly reproducing the 80s vibe without bothering to update it or add anything new.

Moodles, Friday, 22 January 2010 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

Still buying the new album though...

Moodles, Friday, 22 January 2010 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

I still like the first album best, they're very good the wintery John Barry thing. Rocket's nice enough, maybe not so much that I'll acquire the album legally without sampling a few more tracks first.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

Love the album cover.

Bing Crosby, are you listening? (Billy Dods), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

That's a stunning cover. If I had no idea who Goldfrapp was, I'd buy that album based on the cover alone.

van smack, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:15 (sixteen years ago)

Sounds like a Miami Horror remix of "One Day" by Juan MacLean etc which is a very good thing.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, the "you're never coming back" is exactly "you'll realize that I'm the"...

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:27 (sixteen years ago)

I'm hoping (based on the album art etc.) that this is less just post-electroclash/Gaga-for-Guardian-readers/"lol 80s" and more specifically a kind of technicolour synth-disco affair, a diva-pop equiv to The Avalanches' "A Different Feeling".

"Jump" meets "Xanadu".

Tim F, Saturday, 23 January 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

^^^^

Absolutely, I'm hoping that the Ewan Pearson Disco Odyssey remix of 'Ride a White Horse' is the template for this.

Bing Crosby, are you listening? (Billy Dods), Saturday, 23 January 2010 12:08 (sixteen years ago)

So now "Believer" is out there, and it's even less interesting than "Rocket." I'm not giving up yet, because history proves some of the best Goldfrapp tracks are the deep cuts as opposed to the singles, but... ehhh.

Supernature is.

The Roger Waters Experience (Turrican), Friday, 31 March 2017 22:52 (nine years ago)

Right now my order would go

Black Cherry
Tales Of Us
Seventh Tree
Silver Eye/Felt Mountain
Supernature
Head First

kitchen person, Saturday, 1 April 2017 02:14 (nine years ago)

I can't decide which my favourite is out of Felt Mountain, Black Cherry and Tales of Us.

chap, Saturday, 1 April 2017 11:31 (nine years ago)

Love it. Best elektrofrappenplatte to date.

Jeff W, Saturday, 1 April 2017 23:45 (nine years ago)

Felt Mountain is my favourite. "Deer Stop" is gorgeous.

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Sunday, 2 April 2017 05:14 (nine years ago)

"Faux Suede Drifter" on the new one is stunning

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Monday, 3 April 2017 21:08 (nine years ago)

New one kinda harkens back to this feel at times

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1txW6tMaOos

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Monday, 3 April 2017 22:44 (nine years ago)

I tyhi k the second half of this is better. The first half is more or less divided between stompers and chillers, whereas the songs on the second sound like they have a folk attitude compositionally, and an electro one in terms of arrangement.

chap, Tuesday, 4 April 2017 15:13 (nine years ago)

Second half of this is great, starting with the aforementioned amazing "Faux Suede Drifter".

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 6 April 2017 04:06 (nine years ago)

Really loving the whole thing. It is two halves like chap mentions, and I think "Become The One" and "Everything is Never Enough" are epic stompers on each respective side. "Ocean" is a powerful frazzled closer that perfectly wraps back around to "Anymore".

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Friday, 7 April 2017 20:54 (nine years ago)

Strongly suggest finding a way to listen to this on a good set of headphones. Love how this sounds.

three weeks pass...

A handful of plays on, I feel the production and arrangements on Silver Eye are probably their best, but perhaps the songwriting isn't quite up to scratch? There seems to be a lack of gorgeous melodies and memorable hooks compared to earlier work. Still a rich, enjoyable listen, and I appreciate they were probably going for more of a textured ambient experience with this one, at least in the back half.

chap, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 11:01 (eight years ago)

Seeing them tonight, anyone else catch this tour? Seems the setlist has been pretty static with the exception of "Black Cherry" (!!)

mostly supernature/silver eyes tracks on tour

Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 22 September 2017 22:01 (eight years ago)

I still love Silver Eye, but perhaps not as much as Supernature, Black Cherry or Head First.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Saturday, 23 September 2017 08:59 (eight years ago)

Turrican, you would love this tour. Setlist was largely Supernature, and the band closed with an extended mix of "Strict Machine" (very similar to the We are Glitter mix). Nothing from Head First at this show though "Dreaming" and "Shiny and Warm" have been played on this tour.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 23 September 2017 19:30 (eight years ago)

I think I may be the only person who thinks Seventh Tree is their best album.

Moodles, Saturday, 23 September 2017 19:34 (eight years ago)

i saw them open for New Order and it was pretty mesmerizing. and I had NO IDEA Alison Goldfrapp is 51 years old.

nomar, Saturday, 23 September 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

Moodles, Seventh Tree is definitely one of my favourites, the inverse of Tales of Us and includes probably one of their best tracks, "Eat Yourself". No songs from Tree or Tales on this tour, the band's trajectory is mostly dancefloor elevation

I’m liking the production on the last one but find it a bit lacking tune-wise

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 24 September 2017 11:40 (eight years ago)

The slower tracks on Silver Eye are quite similar to Goldfrapp bsides ("Bodo" w/ Pale 3 is akin to "Faux Suede Drifter" for example). Or they're an amalgamation of Black Cherry/Tales Of Us style, like on "Beast That Never Was". But yeah not so sure about the more upbeat ones, they're not as tuneful as anything on Supernature/Black Cherry.

On a side note, Goldfrapp are pure fire live, and very heavy (largely in part to their excellent bassist and 3 female keyboardists). They're quite different on record though.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Sunday, 24 September 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)

Chalk me up also in the Tales Of Us best album camp, no question. Seems weird you can't buy the accompanying film as it's a lovely thing and even had a (limited) cinema release.

piscesx, Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:32 (eight years ago)

Week of Wonders (Ross), Sunday, 24 September 2017 21:35 (eight years ago)

I've enjoyed all their albums, but Black Cherry, Tales Of Us and Seventh Tree are their three masterpieces for me. I have a hard time picking between Tales Of Us and Seventh Tree.

kitchen person, Monday, 25 September 2017 01:38 (eight years ago)

would rank them similarly kitchen but felt mountain has to be included, especially for "Deer Stop"

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 25 September 2017 03:47 (eight years ago)

Supernature is their masterpiece, IMO. Excellent synthpop.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Monday, 25 September 2017 06:42 (eight years ago)

Number One and Ride a White Horse destroyed the crowd live, it's definitely the peak of their synthpop exrcusions

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 25 September 2017 06:50 (eight years ago)

also Supernature has the beguiling "Time Out from the World" and "Let It Take You"

It's probably my least favourite of theirs, but it's still good. It's in the category of their lesser albums along with Supernature and Head First.

They do seem to be incapable of making bad albums and I hope they come back soon.

kitchen person, Thursday, 6 June 2024 00:41 (two years ago)

Hmm, I would put it in the top tier. Strikes a pretty good balance between their dual tendencies, which I find grating when taken to the extreme (7th Tree, Head First).
