Other examples of this notion of waiting for one particular album/artist to come along: I recall journo Steve Sutherland (i think) saying that Mansun's "Six" (tee-hee) would be "the album we have been waiting for since Screamadelica". This begs the question: who is the 'we' he refers to, because much as i like "Screamadelica", i haven't been waiting for an album since its release.

Also, I recall Liam Howlett saying something along the lines of:
"we are still waiting for an album to match Nevermind the Bollocks".

I find this notion of waiting for something unusual. I'm still young, and discovering already-released music every week, so I suppose the reason i'm not 'waiting for something' is cos i could hear an album from 10 years ago tomorrow that will be the best thing I've ever heard. i'm just buying music, and hoping each album i buy is great. i'm not waiting for one particular thing. (with the screamadelica thing for example - why are we waiting for just one record since screamadelica? surely we are waiting for loads of great records to come along?)

are you waiting for something? a worthy successor to your favourite album? a movement, even?

yeh this annoys me - with Noel its like 'we need another snarky self-obssessed muppet so the press can say oh great, rock n' roll has character again!"

with Suthers, wtf? you might as well say you want to be 18 again so you can feel the way you felt about Screamadelica about something new today - its probably not going to happen, just get old already

and Liam, tut tut, there will never be another 'Never Mind The Bollocks' - it was a one off, if something like that came out today it would be laughed and slagged off before it got the chance to make any real impact, i can't help thinking...sames goes for half the Beatles albums i reckon, not that they're not good albums

i'm not waiting for anything, i'm already convinced that acid house was the last 'great revolution in pop' and anything ahead will just be a nice and necessary update on something past

or rather, anything ahead will be something big only in cultural impact due to technology but not sonically/artistically big/new/original etc.

but more seriously, if i sit and wonder about what the next "big" thing will be, i always get depressed wondering if this "break" will be thanks to the hands of advertisers. nick drake's sales and popularity jumped after car ad, right? i know moby's did.

but then what about the sex pistols? especially since they themselves started as a walking ad for mclaren & westwood's shop. so maybe big movements, worthy as they might be for sparking new movements and bands, are inseparable from the workings of the mass media ...

what makes 'Screamadelica' so great? is it because you have a rock band dynamic combined with interesting new sounds influenced by dub, acid house and proggy ambient? sometimes i think 'Vanishing Point' is just as good as 'Screamadelica' but maybe thats cos i dont really know what i'm talking about...also, did Campag Velocet try to make 'the new Screamadelica' and if so why did it fail (was it really that bad?)?

it wasn't that bad, i love the single "to lose la trek".

screamadelica has "higher than the sun" on it = it is great (coupled with several other great songs.) i wouldn't be able to make claims for it as a revolutionary/groundbreaking album, but it's full of great pop music...

i'm waiting to see if The Avalanches can/want to try and equal/top 'Since I Left You' (which i do regard as a landmark album of recent times for me, i'm not sure if i feel it on a 'body and soul leve' but i THINK i do) - i think they could if they decided to take their Beach Boys influence further and make the next album a cross between the first, 'Pet Sounds', 'Discovery' and oh just about every great album evah...

waiting is bad, what a strange thing to do!

plus, what these hoary old rock men dont realise is that they might no like the next revolution/big thing/whatever. what they really should say is "we are waiting for some white men to make another rock album"
