Stooges "Search And Destroy" VS Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer"

While doing my nightly go-thru-and-listen-to-the-cds-I-haven't-listened-to-in-a-while thing, I played these 2 tracks back to back and realized how similar they were, at least in the kicking-ass catagory. Which one do you like better? If I thought flanged drum rolls were annoying I'd pick "S&D", but since I don't, they're tied in my book.

When in doubt, go by the first lines. "I don't need anyone" is a strong-enough sentiment, but it's no "I'M A STREET-WALKIN' CHEETAH WITH A HEART FULLA NAPALM".

(Will I get yelled at if I posit that Prodigy's "Firestarter" is more in the spirit of "S&D" than almost any other song released after 1975?)

Sean and Nate are spot-on, and that is the greatest first line in the history of rock and roll (with the possible exception of "Awopbopaloobop alopbamboom"). A more interesting question might be which version of S&D sounds better, the Bowie one or the Iggy remix?

i have only ever heard the 90s remix/remaster of this album. i love the way every note just drops full and fearsome into the red zone. what is the bowie version like?

Re the "Bowie versions", if I remember correctly on the original LP Search and Destroy and I believe Raw Power itself were left "as is". There is a very noticable difference in the mix after S&D fades out and Gimme Danger comes in. The recent CD reissue may have taken the opportunity to adjust S&D even further, but I'm pretty sure the LP version had the original mix. As to what the Bowie versions sounded like, the label just wanted him to tame the "everything in the red" sound somewhat. Basically it just sounds a bit muffled. The result is somewhat "artier" which is what you'd expect, and is fine, but the balls-out approach of the original mix is probably more appropriate. I don't need to tell you that in either version it's an essential album.

The Rocket from the Tombs version of "Sonic Reducer" is better than the Dead Boys version.

Hstencil is so on the money it's not even funny. (The only thing I like more about the Dead Boys version is the phaser effects.)

"Search & Destroy" is good but "street-walkin' cheetah' sounds like a bad combination of words--probably because of the band that took that name.

Early Cleve-o "punk" band featuring Peter Laughner, Dave Thomas, and uh I think Stiv Bators (or was that Cheetah Chrome?). Pre-cursor to Pere Ubu, the Dead Boys, and, uh, death (for Laughner, I guess). There's a great CD of rehearsal and live material out on Smog Veil, should be relatively available.

yeh, just buy the day the earth met the rocket from the tombs, and not only can you have the original and best version of sonic reducer, but you can also have an unbelievably good version of search and destroy, the quality is maybe not as good as the stooges but the explosive performance is something to make you feel alive!

All This and More is more of a favorite to me than Sonic Reducer, but they are both good songs.

Search and Destroy is in another league. It might be a fair fight against Highway to Hell or Blitzkrieg Bop.
