My memory is not great but I think one of those previous Ger v Arg finals was like one of the worst games of football I've ever seen ... so I hope Argentina really turn it on in the final .... and Germany win.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:49 (nine years ago) link

Yeah this is the Italia '90 WC final (the first final I saw). It was turgid. The pen wasn't one but that was ok as Germany had a perfecty valid pen earlier in the game that wasn't given.

Maradona's tears at the end were all time tho'.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:51 (nine years ago) link

1986 final - great
1990 final appalling beyond belief. Won 1-0 by Germany with a pen after a dive. 2 Argentinians sent off

pandemic, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:53 (nine years ago) link

1990 yeah, atrocious. I'm worried now.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:55 (nine years ago) link

Obviously rooting v hard for Germany. Kinda love this team and am a little sad that no Reus or Gundogan. Hope Hummells is fit to start. Was hoping for a Ger-Holl final with a winner from Muller tbh.

pandemic, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:55 (nine years ago) link

The 1986 final between the two was pretty amazing though

1990 final was possibly the worst game of football conceivable

It was also my first WC final, as I hadn't been able to watch the 1986 one. How different my outlook on humanity would be if I had.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 July 2014 09:57 (nine years ago) link

How different?

Don't Want To Know If Only You Were Lonely (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:00 (nine years ago) link

Sorta ok w/Holland not making it as I thought Ger would beat them. When Holand make it to another wc final I would just like them to win it.

Argentina will make it for a better one. Also having a European and South American team in the final re-establishes the order of things. Its tradition.

Plus all of Brazil will be shitting themselves. I am so mad at the way they played in this wc that they deserve all they're getting.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:01 (nine years ago) link

The idea that Brazil have spent 11bn in a tournament the Argies would triumph...it tickles me. But for Germany to lose 5/8 wc finals? So idk who I'd be going. I just hope its a classic and something hilarious and unexpected and all time happens.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:05 (nine years ago) link

xp I may be overstating this a little, but being football-obsessed throughout childhood, reading about world cups and all the exciting finals there had been, then seeing one and it was like *that* - I dunno, I don't think I've ever trusted other people to do anything right ever again.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:06 (nine years ago) link

All WC finals I've seen in my lifetime have been shit.

'94 - pens
'98 - Brazil again not in it
'02 - Ballack gone and Kahn couldn't keep Bra out forever
'06 - stalemate after Italy equalized. But who cares bcz of Zidane headbutt

I only like the 2010 one. Great contrast, loved the Dutch tactics - made the Spanish sweat (and nearly won them the cup) and really earn their win in ET.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:11 (nine years ago) link

messi 4 goal final pls

cpt navajo (darraghmac), Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:15 (nine years ago) link

Argentina were just not a good team in any way, shape or form in 1990. I'm not sure who was in the German team but I'm sure they were part of what I like to think of as the Obnoxious Generation of German footballers... you blew it, Englanders.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:17 (nine years ago) link

saw this great photo of Matthaus yesterday or Tuesday where he's puffing his chest out and looks like Lord Flashheart

Kiss Screaming Seagull Her Seagull Her (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:20 (nine years ago) link

'90 final was obv dogshit but (also as a first-timer) there was enough drama/intrigue/malevolence in the tournament in general that I wasn't fussed I don't think

Kiss Screaming Seagull Her Seagull Her (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:22 (nine years ago) link

iirc we'd even rearranged a holiday at my insistence solely in order that I could see it (that being the reason I'd missed the 1986 one). So there's a faint smear of guilt through subjecting innocents to it too.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:27 (nine years ago) link

Though actually 1994 might have been equally bad, all I can remember was Viola's cameo and Pagliuca kissing the post. At least 1990 was shorter and something eventually happened in it.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:33 (nine years ago) link

'94 was dire too.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 10:43 (nine years ago) link

The thing that struck me from reading old Rothmans annuals when I was a kid was that both sides always scored in the WC final. Then 1990 ruined that sequence and only once since have both sides scored. I think it would be best for all concerned if Germany were 2-0 up inside 10min.

has anyone else mentioned that one of the brazilian sports dailies is called "Lance!"?

sktsh, Thursday, 10 July 2014 11:20 (nine years ago) link

Abolish offsides

, Thursday, 10 July 2014 11:25 (nine years ago) link

at this point i don't know if you are being ironic or if you just don't realize that is more or less the same as saying "why don't they just pick the ball up with their hands and carry it?!"

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 10 July 2014 11:53 (nine years ago) link

I would be okay with that

Actually just thinking out loud here

But if you subbed in one of your sub keepers for one of your non-goalkeeper players

Could that player then use his hands too

Because he would be wearing his special kit and the special gloves

I believe that's what gives them the power to pick up the ball - it's not the skin of their hand making contact but the material of the glove

Call it a 'technicality' or 'loophole' but that's the way teams have been getting away with having a keeper on the pitch for years

So why not expand it to two?? Or... Even three

, Thursday, 10 July 2014 12:07 (nine years ago) link

Wait not that version, this

Enough with Brazilian tunes, let's have some Rammstein or something.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 12:19 (nine years ago) link

if frontrunning was the dominant factor in deciding which teams chinese fans support you would expect spain fans and... definitely not arsenal fans

ogmor, Thursday, 10 July 2014 13:57 (nine years ago) link

Well Germany was also in the '02 final, presumably a banner year for chinese World Cup pique for obvious reasons

, Thursday, 10 July 2014 14:13 (nine years ago) link

yeah they're unambiguously a superpower both atm and historically, but there's nothing unique about that. also germany were powered into the 02 final purely by oliver kahn bellowing, find it v hard to believe ppl fell in love with that side

ogmor, Thursday, 10 July 2014 14:34 (nine years ago) link

They are unambiguous laker/Kobe lovers too so take that fwiw

, Thursday, 10 July 2014 14:43 (nine years ago) link

Think there's probably residual admiration for Germany too pouring over from admiration for German brands too

Probably a racial component too, Germany happens to be the 'right kind if white' but IDK if it'd be articulated in that way

Idk, I can ask my cousin - she's a big fan of Germany

, Thursday, 10 July 2014 14:45 (nine years ago) link

Uh, right in what way?

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 14:46 (nine years ago) link

something about the teutonic stereotype mb? you could probably make some case for germany being the most imperial major side. all the stuff about being impressed by their discipline... hard to know what that means really.

perhaps it's precisely the lack of charismatic individuals that is appealing, but I like the idea of chinese fans en masse looking past roberto carlos/ronaldinho/lucio/ronaldo/cafu & falling for hamann, frings, kahn et al in a big way

ogmor, Thursday, 10 July 2014 14:56 (nine years ago) link

Can someone give me a good reason for wanting Argentina to win this, 'cuz I can't think of any.

Messi, Aguero, Higuain, di Maria

Daphnis Celesta, Thursday, 10 July 2014 15:03 (nine years ago) link

(xp) Well Kahn was, uh, quite individual, remember when he had a sort of midlife crisis and left his wife for some Eastern European gal and went totally off the rails... also rivalry with Lehmann brought the LOLs.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 July 2014 15:09 (nine years ago) link

If the face of English football for the past x years had been someone other than Rooney perhaps you'd also find yourself with a billion fans on the other side of the globe

, Thursday, 10 July 2014 15:09 (nine years ago) link

yeah they rly should have promoted john terry instead

dan m, Thursday, 10 July 2014 15:10 (nine years ago) link

xxp I picked those three bc I think they have quite a bit of character, idk anything about metzelder or whoever

"the Dutch had spent the entire 2nd half trying to find an opening in Argentine's fierce defense line"

(or something)

uh, guess we all just missed the fact that Vlaar's penalty NEARLY WENT IN ON THE FUCKING REBOUND

that was van gaal's plan all along. it only just failed.

wmlynch, Thursday, 10 July 2014 23:33 (nine years ago) link

Already been debunked. Vlaar touches it for a second time, nudging it towards the goal with his shoulder/chest.
