hope they break out the hats and hooters

i was listening to the Men In Blazers teamusa rally podcast, fully teared up over Lalas & Meolla's speeches to 2014 team... the hugeness of it all, it's kinda getting to me!

the 1994 world cup was the first one i watched, at my dorm at uni. i only just learned today that they were playing games at Stanford! how crazy to think of the world cup being a couple of hours away from where i live now.

The team still trains & plays matches at Stanford pretty regularly, too.

I'd be very surprised if Jozy plays tomorrow, let alone starts.

the term is actually 'goal line technology', yank, but congrats

So we have the Swiss Messi vs the actual Messi to look forward to today and then Belgium USA.

Would love to see the USA progress but have a horrible feeling Belgium will edge it by a single goal.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 08:12 (nine years ago) link

USA out plz - wc is only for Latin America and Europe. Everybody else should be excluded. Screw globalization.

SIKE.

But I would like to see Belgium through, getting stoked for a Bel-Ned semi final.

Prostitute Farm Online (Bananaman Begins), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 09:24 (nine years ago) link

Belgium the team is a poor mockery of Belgium the players I'm cheering USA cos they're the opposite

do u like green ez & jam (darraghmac), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 09:27 (nine years ago) link

and I think they'll win it

do u like green ez & jam (darraghmac), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 09:27 (nine years ago) link

Jones and Johnson are the only US players I like and that like is outweighed by my extreme dislike of Clint Dempsey so Belgium ftw.

htf does anyone not like Clint Dempsey are you well

Belgium have been the worst of the so-called dark horses (Chile and Colombia have been great) but hey its USA. Argentina are so going to beat either of these easy.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 09:51 (nine years ago) link

Americans: Is Alejandro Bedoya any good, will he play and most importantly should I sub him in fir 6 point Oscar in my fantasy league team?

Beckerman v Fellaini - who is going to elbow someone in the face first?

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:03 (nine years ago) link

I think USA are going to win also

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:04 (nine years ago) link

It's a tough one to call: I think Belgium of penalties, after a gruellingly attritional game. Or 'game'. If nothing else, Belgium have shown so far they can do gruelling battles of attrition.

Prostitute Farm Online (Bananaman Begins), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:08 (nine years ago) link

Then Belgium to actually turn in a performance to justify the pre-tournament hype to turn over Argentina. And then to beat Holland after going two goals down, please.

Prostitute Farm Online (Bananaman Begins), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:10 (nine years ago) link

Argentina aren't getting by Switzerland.

pandemic, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:14 (nine years ago) link

No, but Messi is.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:15 (nine years ago) link

So... Bedoya.

ewar woowar (or something), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:18 (nine years ago) link

Not getting the Belgium hate tbh. They haven't been very exciting, but they haven't actually been bad. They should beat USA fairly comfortably. I can see Switzerland beating Argentina, but much as I like them I don't want that to happen.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:18 (nine years ago) link

bedoya seems dangerous and talented but inconsistent and loses the ball a bit

I think I might chance him if he starts. Also shaqiri will score today, I can sense it.

"Extreme dislike of Dempsey" - why?

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:29 (nine years ago) link

Jones has been the best American player in the WC so far for sure

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:29 (nine years ago) link

crazy how the national systems are in europe just imagining something like this in the usa for basketball http://grantland.com/features/world-cup-2014-belgian-national-team-vincent-kompany-eden-hazard-marouane-fellaini

Amazing insight from Belgium's Dries Mertens:

http://www.goal.com/en-sg/news/5456/international-football/2014/06/30/4924432/usa-run-has-surprised-me-mertens

"I watched their games and they have a really good team. They have a great striker in front and the team behind is like a team, they are really good together.

So for us it is going to be really difficult to score a goal, but we are confident and want to win this game also.

I think the most important thing is to win this game, because if we don't win it we are out."

groovypanda, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:55 (nine years ago) link

I've missed a load of games due to Glastonbury and ugh the first one I will get to watch in its entirety will be Belgium USA, which will surely be like a really shitty midtable Premiership game.

Finding it hard to be that impressed by a squad with that many Spurs players in it tbh. Though I think Chadli and Dembele have been quietly banned.
