Children in bars

bars are for killing oneself with toxins, swearing, or trying to copulate. children must never be allowed in them at any point - bars in which children are allowed cease to be bars and therefore people who like bars can avoid them.

What if the children also want to kill themselves with toxins, swear and copulate?

I could say that about a lot of people I see in bars.

This couple doesn't seem that bad. The kid's screams are not that noticeable above the din of the general conversation and music. The mom is even kind of cute in a Slavic kind of way. No rings though so maybe it's just a nanny and her boyfriend. I certainly don't care enough to attempt to clarify the situation.

calstars, Friday, 6 May 2016 22:57 (eight years ago) link

tonight, around 8pm, 6 children sprinting up stairs, down other stairs, basically in a loop through the entire bar, for 45 minutes or so. in the end their parents are just basically getting wasted.

there is definitely a spirit among some parents in which they refuse to accept that the fact they have kids means some extra responsibility. i'm not saying this is some symptom of decline, just that the growing idea of endless no-child youth is causing internal conflict and desire among those who successfully procreated before they got the memo.

i see this in country bars a lot too. kids with colouring books in the bar and then an hour or two scampering about the place. sorry ye cant have it both ways, lads

We tried a new place for lunch out today. Roof deck is packed with early-20s who ordered bottomless brunch and probably threw away the food. Downstairs is half-packed with early-20s who ordered bottomless brunch and ate most of their food. Other than the usual champagne cocktails the bottomless brunch also gives an option of cans of Corona light, Miller lite, and Tecate - they're all drinking the Corona. Out of three pretty shit beers that's easily the worst, and I know from shit beer.

My five year old was a perfect lady and ate her waffle with aplomb. But yes, now that I'm pushing 40, I do kind of resent children in bars, especially the ones that don't know how to drink.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 25 June 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

I don't understand Corona. It's the beer for people who want to project that They're On Vacation. It tastes like fake lime piss.

I would too if hipsters were dumping food and drinking Corona.

was in a bar earlier today watching the euro and having some bloody marys and beers with friends

a couple came in with a toddler & sat right across from us, kid was in a highchair

they sat there and ate their food and loled at the northern ireland own goal

the kid was cute and didn't cause any disturbance

they paid and left

The presence of children makes it more difficult to suspend time and avoid mortality in liquor.

What are the best shit beers? I've been shying away from IPA and Tripels lately and trying to just keep it to low-alcohol garbage beer, but I'm afraid to invest in anything other than Corona and Stella, both of which I don't care for much but are at least known quantities.

And to keep this on topic, my liquor store is split with a bar and I always feel like I'm getting side-eye when I bring my kid in there with me. Maybe if Maryland would just allow the sale of beer in grocery stores like every other civilized state, we wouldn't have to go through this! But they have a parrot and she loves to go over and talk to it. Safeway is never gonna have a parrot, I can tell you that.

how's life, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 18:26 (seven years ago) link

I'd be more afraid of the parrot than drunk drivers tbh

xp Modelo Especial (lagoon's fave iirc) is pretty decent but has had a huge marketing boost so it might not be as cheap as it previously was

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

most cheap beers aren't that bad imo

marcos, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 18:35 (seven years ago) link

i mean there are trash ones for sure, college party beers like natural light, old milwaukee etc and any ice beers but imo corona budweiser miller coors they are all fine

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 18:38 (seven years ago) link

used to be bars scattered a layer of crushed children on the floor to absorb spilled beer. can't do that anymore of course (thanks obama) so i don't know what they're doing there now.

oculus lump (contenderizer), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 18:43 (seven years ago) link

modelo and tecate are both fine choses. if unavailable, my next go-to is a sixer of werewolf killers.

children in bars? not really a huge problem for me.
i did, however, leave a bar a month or so back because the children were loud and making it difficult to read. this was mid-afternoon on a weekday, and it's a bar/restaurant/grocery store, apparently where parents come to chat after they pick up their little kids. the kids got into some yelling, but mostly it was the relentless screeching of metal chairs against a stone floor that drove me out.

I haven't read at a bar for a while, noticed someone reading at the bar on the weekend during Saturday busy hours. I thought, man, who reads at the bar when it's really noisy, the only person I know who would do that is.... and then I noticed it actually was my ex-girlfriend from a decade ago

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link

HA.
i read at bars with some regularity. usually late afternoon on my day off when places are pretty quiet. especially if there's a backyard. i can't read at home without getting distracted by the internet or records or whatever else. and i don't wanna chill in any of the coffee shops near me/can't drink that much coffee late in the day.

ian, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 18:58 (seven years ago) link

heck yeah, that is a good plan imo

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link

it is so nice outside here today, I really want to kick back at a bar patio and read some books

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link

hope you can find some toddlers to join you.
