"We...are the crystal gems..."

The Startrekman, Sunday, 30 March 2014 01:01 (five years ago) link

it took me a little while to warm up completely to this show (they can lean a little too heavily on the gems in-fighting), but i love it now. the theme song and the "giant woman" song are total earworms:

I've never watched this despite being curious bc of the Scharpling connection, but I found out last week that the head writer is a guy I went to high school with.

i haven't seen this yet but i know the couple who do the music for it and they're pretty great

this show has been shaking up the status quo so much

Boy, wait until they get around to airing Monday's episode with how Ruby and Sapphire met...

the song in last night's ep was one of their best

You mean Peridot's song? That was pretty great. I wonder if the opening sequence is going to have another change soon!

Life and death and love and birth and...

Another successful Stevenbomb, I'd say

That song by Deedee/Pearl last night was real nice. Sweet musical episode all around, love to see more of these

CN released some 3D videos (I guess this is a new thing on YouTube) from the sing-a-long panel at SDCC:
Lot of fun stuff that came out from that, including some videos from the rehearsals. Wish I could've been there!

"Here Comes A Thought" from last week was another great song, here's Rebecca Sugar playing it solo at the same event:

This is the only show where me, Carl, and our almost 3 year old all like, so we watch it all the time.

Okay, I should _not_ have started relistening to "Do it for her" in work.

Quite a few fans have been speculating about that particular development for some time; I never really gave it much attention but there definitely was a strong case to be made.

I wonder how much planning Rebecca and co put into this show. It was hinted in an early episode that Pearl was ambivalent about shape-shifting, and we're getting a possible reason for that only now!

Duane Barry, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 21:24 (one year ago) link

yup, it makes sense that she would never want to shape shift again after that

of course, it leads to MANY questions (like, confusing Star Wars prequel trilogy Emperor-shenanigans) that hopefully we won't have to wait too long to see answered. definitely feeling the show heading towards the endgame now

i think they've been planning this for a while - the seeds of doubt were planted as far back as Bismuth's appearance. kinda love that they've been slowly developing Rose Quartz's personality throughout the show, showing her to be a much more flawed and conflicted figure than was let on

That's it for Season 5! Battle Of Heart and Mind is over.

i thought this was really the end of the show period - the way it ended, they resolved all the main story arcs - but apparently there's still a season 6 and a movie coming up next fall. from what i heard they weren't sure if they would get a sixth season, and since this was all planned out like two years ago they did this in case it was the end. still, if this was all we got, it would've been perfect wrap-up for the show as a whole.

still - i love this show so much. so much love and excitement in the special tonight. ALL the fusions! epic gem battles! the emotions! talking out problems and ultimately saving the universe through.. shame!

also - besides the incredible empathy mission this show embarks on, it makes time to put some seriously creepy, bordering on Evangelion-level scenes with White Diamond that freaked me out. 'pink' Steven's "SHE'S GONE." was also phenomenal

good job, cartoon network, you bastards

my family watched the full run of this show over the past year and we're now caught up except for yesterday's episode. it's such a great show and i feel like my kids (8 and 4) get different things out of it.

And my wife was roommates with Sugar in college!

Evan, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 17:45 (seven months ago) link

yeah i was referring to l@mar @brams. we weren't friends or anything but were both on the AP track and so we had a lot of classes together. i do remember him drawing a lot of anime (very well) in class.

na (NA), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 17:52 (seven months ago) link

Yeah, this season finale was fantastic - they threw so much stuff into it, but it all worked beautifully. I'm not sure I really agree with certain characters being "befriended" really, but that is in line with the series' ethos, so fair enough. S5 was a lot better than S4 overall, too.

Man, Obsidian making that sword was so freakin' awesome! And James Baxter animated the Pink Steven sequence.

Fantastic, long interview about Sugar's influences, the making of the movie and her generally lovely positivity about animation.

Nhex, Saturday, 31 August 2019 04:49 (two weeks ago) link

anyone else watch the movie yet?

spoilers in my thoughts below.

i had mixed feelings about it. i found spinel pretty grating as a character and it was frustrating to not have the "real" crystal gems around for most of the movie (though the reset pearl and amethyst were funny) and for the residents of beach city to not really be in it at all. on the other hand, i loved the message of there being no happy endings and that we all just continue to change and grow, and there were some good songs (predictably, my favorite was the ted leo song). and i loved the friendly (but somehow still threatening) diamonds, especially white diamond, who has maybe my favorite character design in the show. and spinel's back story was convincingly sad.

na (NA), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 20:13 (one week ago) link

I loved Spinel, her animation alone was worth the trip
