Well that was the trollingest episode of any show ever, i am grudgingly impressed

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 4 May 2020 04:47 (three years ago) link

One anthology movie set on a train was Dr. Terror's House of Horrors. I'm sure there have been others.

wasdnous (abanana), Monday, 4 May 2020 06:09 (three years ago) link

ok i laughed a bunch at this one esp towards the end

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 May 2020 02:27 (three years ago) link

season 4 still isn't on UK netflix which is quite annoying seeing as this is near enough the only show I've seen on it that I like and actually consistently makes me laugh.

I was in a daft giggly mood this aft and couldn't stop laughing at the ep where he turns himself into a pickle to escape therapy and the vindicators one with the ghost train hero "all aboard!".

calzino, Tuesday, 5 May 2020 16:34 (three years ago) link

xxp i was sure that it was gonna be a snowpiercer-type deal, but it pivoted rather impressively from there lol

sleight return (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 May 2020 17:04 (three years ago) link

definitely too much to absorb in my first viewing. lots of funny gags, though, especially the bechdel test one

sleight return (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 May 2020 17:05 (three years ago) link

man the bechdel joke one felt very much like chum for its core audience

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 5 May 2020 17:11 (three years ago) link

i understand that, but there were plenty of layers of irony in there--it was a shot at critics who think the show doesn't have well-drawn female characters, an in-character joke about a 14-year-old boy's idea about how women communicate with each other, etc.

sleight return (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 May 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

for sure, but the show DOESN'T have well-drawn female characters (or any characters really, everybody's a vehicle) and the "is lesbian part of her job description" line in tandem with the suggestion that "hey that DID meet the bechdel test, suck it feminists" all added up to

rick is certainly a vehicle for whatever pops into the creators' heads, but come on.

> season 4 still isn't on UK netflix

second half of season 4 starts on e4 on thursday

koogs, Tuesday, 5 May 2020 18:11 (three years ago) link

VC, beyond the thin veneer of one sentence character (Jerry is a narcissist fuck-up, Summer is the renegade teen who's as smart as she thinks she is), I read ALL the characters as vehicles for whatever pops into the creators' heads! Which is fine, I'm not watching this for dramatic insight, I'm watching it for the yuks. The issue for me is when they get into 'makes u think' social commentary with particular hamhandedness on topics that they not only don't care about but that don't concern them in the slightest. This was one of those.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 5 May 2020 18:45 (three years ago) link

best thing about this episode was no jerry, the worst character

wasdnous (abanana), Tuesday, 5 May 2020 19:01 (three years ago) link

Calz they are on channel 4 now

watched one episode of Solar Opposites and i suppose i'll watch the rest in a self-loathing late night blitz but man this is worse than Final Space and Final Space was not good.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 9 May 2020 19:03 (three years ago) link

also jeez did Roiland HAVE to do the lead character with Rick's voice? And personality traits? It's disconcerting.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 9 May 2020 19:04 (three years ago) link

on all4 or whatever it’s called s4 starts with.. episode 6? (and there’s a coronavirus reference!)

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 9 May 2020 22:33 (three years ago) link

"S4" is the extension of the shortened S3

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 9 May 2020 22:35 (three years ago) link

It's the story train one, was on actual TV on Thursday.

three weeks pass...

this show is epic.

Ste, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 14:23 (three years ago) link

I didn't love last week's story, but the finale made up for it.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 16:10 (three years ago) link

Need to watch that one. The vat of acid episode was some dark shit.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 17:32 (three years ago) link

A lot of the past 2-3 years of TV seems like high-concept for the sake of high-concept and that episode was one example imo.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

lol “high concept for its own sake” is the entire usp of this show tbf

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 2 June 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

Yes but there are usually other things going on that make it fun.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 17:42 (three years ago) link

My mistake, Vat of Acid was good. I was referring to the camping trip episode.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 17:51 (three years ago) link

the second half of this season didn't sit well with me

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 2 June 2020 19:31 (three years ago) link

i haven't actually seen s4 as yet, it's only on Netflix UK in a couple of weeks I believe. I only just watched the first 3 seasons.

Ste, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 10:23 (three years ago) link

the new episodes are on All4 right now

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 10:28 (three years ago) link

the show has a habit of filling harmon's "fun stuff" segment with bland violence.

wasdnous (abanana), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 10:34 (three years ago) link

Has anyone seen Solar Opposites? Because the one (shitty) episode I saw played like a b-story Rick & Morty with none of the stuff that makes R&M good. In case anyone is wondering about Roiland's contributions vs. Harmon. With Solar Opposites in mind, the gross violence in particular I presume is Roiland's contribution.

...

And indeed, back from a visit to Wikipedia:

At Channel 101, participants submit a short film in the format of a pilot, and a live audience decides which pilots continue as a series. Roiland, then a producer on reality programming, began submitting content to the festival a year after its launch, in 2004. His pilots typically consisted of shock value—"sick and twisted" elements that received a confused reaction from the audience.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 13:17 (three years ago) link

the WACKY SUBVERSIVE CYNICAL world of Roiland is unfortunately getting family guy formulaic imo

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 14:44 (three years ago) link

Yeah it was fresh in the channel 101 days, less so now

i enjoyed the solar opposites season but i wouldn't recommend it to ilx

Mordy, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:20 (three years ago) link

i'll watch anything with andy daly in it tho tbph i'm even all caught up on bananas for bonanza

Mordy, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:21 (three years ago) link

It's def not highbrow enough for ILX.

I'm halfway through the season. The wikipedia says it eventually gets more serialized which is a bummer because I expected a lower stakes outlet for Roiland-style chaos ie House Of Cosbys. Instead it's sci-fi Bob's Burgers with weaker jokes. But otherwise the stories are bizarre and engaging and I'm enjoying it.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link

I found Roiland voicing the lead to be massively distracting, since he plays a scientist who sounds like Rick, right down to the stammer. The first episode I thought had some good jokes in it, but also a lot of not good jokes. So ... totally average.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:57 (three years ago) link

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that this show's 2020 season is nominated in the 2020 ILX TV poll:

ILX's Best Television of 2020 Poll / VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD / Voting Ends After January 29, 2021

If you like this show and you'd like to see it have a good showing in the poll (running in February) all you need to do is submit a ballot including it and your other favorites (3 minimum, 25 maximum, ranked by your favorite to least favorite) to forksclovetofu at gmail. It'll take five minutes; get to it!

Dunno if anyone has been watching this season, but after a great first episode, the last few have been pretty bad. episode 4 was probably my least favorite episode they've ever done

Vinnie, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:03 (two years ago) link

Still some great gags and ideas, but definitely feeling like more of chore this time. I think the unpleasantness of it all is starting to grind me down - kind of feel that now is not the right time for art this deeply cynical.

chap, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:17 (two years ago) link

the episode names bear little relation to the contents, and aren't referenced outside the epg. if episode 4 is the cenobite episode then i think i agree.

the decoys episode seemed like a episode-length version of the snake civil-time-war sequence from the previous series and became hard to follow after 5 minutes. i did like the wooden puppets though.

koogs, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:22 (two years ago) link

still need to watch the last couple of eps, still love this show, stop watching and shut up if you're not into it
