presumably the top-billed ex-Bond players all do a single day's work in one room each, like modern DTV Bruce Willis and Steven Seagal

BTW here's a fantastic deep dive into how these films are the brainchild of the IRL Turtle from Entourage, Mark Wahlberg's former assistant who apparently stays barely ahead of various quantities of Russian drug money he's laundering, by giving out bit parts when his body parts come under threat.

I never knew that's where the MST3K frequent line "...pops the clutch and tells the world to eat his dust!" was from...

Elaine May's A New Leaf had two excellent posters.

The German poster is also pretty good.

The German VHS label knew that a movie is not funny unless it has a busy / caricature image on the front.

such a wonderful and weird film. was listening to the Blank Check ep on it this week and daydreaming about the original 3-hour cut being someday found and released, and who i would try to cajole into going with me.

and all great posters. the one that's claustrophobic with words was, iirc, also basically the script for one of the trailers....which consequently had basically no room to say or show anything of the movie they were actually promoting.

big clear version

We could just audit the thread thoroughly for any Jack Davis posters not already covered, but it's too much fun to have them still turn up, often on completely-forgotten-to-history movies, several times a year.

armoured van, Holden (sic), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 20:37 (three years ago) link

...then again we can forget them easily enough even when they have been posted

Viva Max!(1969

great find. and very design-y for Davis! wonder if it was from some art director's concept.

― glandular lansbury (sic), Saturday, March 5, 2016 3:02 PM (five years ago)

I guess I was reacting to the symmetry?

and on Finders Keepers:

now i'm wondering if it's been posted before. i swear i control-F'ed first, but those roller derby women look familiar.

― Doctor Casino, Saturday, October 10, 2020 8:30 AM (five months ago)

and

Oh, that's first-rate! Right down to proudly announcing its very solidly B- and C-list leads at the top. Looks like real Cannonball Run stuff - I have to assume that the cutaways to the two roller-derby girls are particularly tedious.

The Villain, a Hal Needham live-action version of Wile E. Coyote, was very poorly reviewed in 1979.

This may or may not be why it was rebranded as Cactus Jack and given a Jack Davis poster for Australian release.

Grisso posted a Hannibal Brooks poster a while ago, but the Winner/Reed/Clement/LaFrenais joint had multiple variations and foreign alts. This is the best one, imo, and tragically this seems to be the largest version on the internet:

there are loads of that SUPERSOLDIER IN THE SUPER ADVENTURE! variation :) there's a vertical left-justified of the "I'm the hero" one that doesn't work as well, plus this one, which is a good-but-not-as-good take on the joke and cuts off more of the image.

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Sunday, 11 April 2021 20:42 (three years ago) link

Loved that movie as a kid. I'm guessing it's not good.

Richard Lester's How I Won The War (1967) poster was so claustrophobic that it crammed its two lead soldiers into one tin pan hat

https://i.imgur.com/MbWDCKL.jpg

hueg

For some reason, the French didn't care about Crawford, the young star of two of Lester's previous four films, and decided to focus on his colleague, who'd merely been an ensemble lead in the other two.

Stewart in a Cinemascope screwball seems so promising, but him in anything post-1959 is a warning - and the wiki is larded with quotes from the co-screenwriter about how poorly-conceived the project was from option to premiere.

all of the styles in The Magic of Lassie poster, but especially the simpler line drawing people just above the title, were ubiquitous in my childhood, especially in children's readers assembled between, oh, 69-82... they need names and coffee table books.

lol wow, that's great.

i recognize Fawcett, Savalas, Streisand, Allen, Hope, Coburn, Montalban... not sure about the others. I suppose the blonde with the big hair has to be Dolly Parton though it's not a great drawing. maybe Peter Lorre? Lucille Ball? Fred Astaire? Not sure about the others.

oh yeah, Marvin, not Coburn. had considered Davis and Kelly but wasn't sure.
