Oops

It’s true, cast is beautiful, even Larry F looks as good as he ever has (although Hugh D very much not my type, but I can guess the appeal to others).

I like Dhavernas enough that I felt like I should check out the Canadian euthanasia drama Mary Kills People, which she stars in. alas it is tragically Not Good. anyway, she's great, everyone watch Wonderfalls

more derail but just wanna say I love crime series and my favorite of the last decade remains The Fall, and there is the Gillian link!

life is beauitul (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 1 September 2020 15:49 (three years ago) link

I watched the first series of The Fall and liked it well enough, but the idea of seeing that plot / those characters keep it up for multiple series made me feel too queasy to keep watching.

Watched 2.07 last night, spoilers for 2.05-7:

This show is enraging! Enraging!

The evidence will lead away from the Ripper = it must be Chilton, who all the evidence points towards! Jesus Christ, I was so angry even though I hated Chilton and wanted Hannibal to eat him.

Katz’s murder was gruesome even for this show. I enjoyed, if that’s not the wrong word, Hannibal serving Gideon his own leg and getting him to eat it. You feel that now Will is out of jail and on the move again, that they will close in on him (as the opening scene suggests) but who else will die before then?

Whole thing with Alana is deeply unnerving, and her continuing to be completely wrong suggests a sticky end, that Hannibal will try to pin on Will. Hope I’m wrong about this!

scampo italiano (gyac), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 08:49 (three years ago) link

Also, talking to my Hannibal friend and she was like ”you got that Hannibal is fucking Alana to get at Will, right? She’s the middle woman.” And it’s so true. (Wow, this show).

scampo italiano (gyac), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 20:43 (three years ago) link

Ok, end of s2e10 and what the fuck? After an earlier imagined sex scene where the two share Alana, then Will and Hannibal cook and eat human flesh together? Over candlelight and romantic music? What the fuck?!?!

Obviously, I enjoy the show more than ever.

scampo italiano (gyac), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 20:58 (three years ago) link

lol, yes. it's fun watching people work their way through the horrorshow.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 20:59 (three years ago) link

the blended sex scene is like... maybe my favorite moment of the whole show

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 21:55 (three years ago) link

beautifully, fluidly filmed and edited together, ostensibly straight sex made gay gay gay gay GAY (and even gayer in retrospect bc of events in the third season)... fucking perfect

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 21:58 (three years ago) link

Yeah episode had the earlier sex scene which is shot all layered and arty and then this... what do i even say?

scampo italiano (gyac), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 22:14 (three years ago) link

I endorse all these sex scenes in the show and all future ones.

Yerac, Wednesday, 2 September 2020 22:50 (three years ago) link

not sure if fgti is still reading this thread but i wanna tell them they need to go back and rewatch season 2 just because I think they'd get a kick out of some of the scoring/soundtrack choices like that scene with Hannibal/Will's so-very-romantic dinner date set to Mahler's Adagietto from Symphony No. 5 lol.

Roz, Thursday, 3 September 2020 09:01 (three years ago) link

Oh God. (S2.11-13).

Ortolan. This scene fucked me up. The intrinsic awfulness of the dish, the fact that Hannibal deliberately does his atrocity without his face covered - and I have mentioned numerous times watching this, the fact that he doesn’t cover his face when he kills either - and perhaps most wtf of all, the scene has a severe undercurrent of sex. Come on, the focus on lips, lingering glances, throats moving? Totally a freakish sex scene.

The Vergers: as awful as I’d remembered them. Margot’s surgery honestly broke my heart, I’ve really liked her these past few episodes. Mason’s sticky...pause... was as disturbing as it was in the books. Quite sure I’ll be seeing some of those images on the insides of my eyelids when I have nightmares.

Great to see Bedelia back again, Anderson does a wonderful job of phrasing her words slowly and deliberately as though each one causes her pain. She’s such an interesting character.

Will dreaming twice about Hannibal tied up at his mercy...mate, you need to talk to someone about that.

Mads is SO great when he’s not speaking; the little flicker of his eyes, the slightest purse of the lips, even the way he moves. He was made for this role.

The end of s2 finale -!!!!! I haven’t quite processed it yet, apart from fucking hell, FUCK-ING HELL.

scampo italiano (gyac), Thursday, 3 September 2020 20:46 (three years ago) link

Last year, I was really super procrastinating the night before I had to do something big, so of course I made my friends watch the first 4 episode of the series trying to get them hooked (they just were really into Dancy) and when they lost interest I jumped to the season 2 finale ending as my final effort. It failed to sell it and I was SHOcKED.

I've stuck with this until the first episode of S3 and I'm done. I've stayed so long because of the wild acclaim on here and other places but it's never worked for me. I'm not a great binge watcher, so I wonder if it's because of that? Perhaps I'm just dead inside. I'm also largely anti-Bond and this is basically Lecter as superhero or Bourne, with all that hyper-competence stuff laid on thick (in a full-body cagoule). The colours bored me; the endless shots of Will in the dark, or out in the snow; the portentous camp; the NYT-interiors fetishism of Lecter's home and the food preparation; Will sweating, in the dark, in the snow; how stupid everyone was!; Izzard, ffs; the time-travel between states.

I enjoyed the inventiveness of the kills and the 'christ, I can't believe this is on my telly' sense of things but it couldn't sustain me. Eck.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 19:33 (three years ago) link

I know Lecter is more than this, but I don't think I ever need to see a charismatic, affectless serial killer in anything ever again - whatever it tells me about my time.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 19:36 (three years ago) link

I deleted my whole fucking post on this before posting, aaargh, but to briefly respond to Chinaski: this hypercompetence is straight out of the novels, where Hannibal is a lot more unworldly than here.

scampo italiano (gyac), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 19:46 (three years ago) link

Oh aye, I get that. I'm a big fan of the character across a novel or a film, where his supra/superhuman qualities are used less operatically. In the confined space of a series, I found myself muttering 'oh, for fuck's sake' far too often.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 19:58 (three years ago) link

Not for everyone!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 20:04 (three years ago) link

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 20:08 (three years ago) link

Chinaski... you’re allowed to not like things

I didn’t binge it at all, and watched it as it aired on television. If it’s not for you, don’t force it!

I would never say the character is without affect, he’s definitely played as subtle in how he reacts. There are definitely moments of impatience, amusement, frustration, and glee. Not any moments where he just breaks out in laughter, but he emotes!

irn-scamp (mh), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 23:02 (three years ago) link

yeah I've really been savoring (lol) Mads' micro facial tics this time around

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Wednesday, 9 September 2020 00:45 (three years ago) link

he gets absolutely cranky at Bedelia being less than a full partner early in season 3, lots of internal frustration

irn-scamp (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2020 01:54 (three years ago) link

“are you a participant or an observer?” *pouting, cranky*

irn-scamp (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2020 01:55 (three years ago) link

Ok, let’s try this again. S301-s0307.

Decadence! Everything about this series is drowning in it. It’s pretty difficult to make Florence look bad on film, but even so, this is such a feast for the eyes. I had to sit with a quietly grumbling husband who deeply wants to us to go to Florence as a result but, like most people, we aren’t going anywhere soon. Sad!

It definitely seems to be the sexiest series so far. Bedelia and Hannibal have obviously gone there (come on, the hair washing scene), Alana and Margot had their arty scene and there was a lot of vibes between Will and Hannibal even as he was preparing him to eat what the fuck is this show. Even Mason got some cattle prod action (is it bad the prostate milking was like the most mundane part of that episode?)

I actually squeaked a bit realising, yes, that was 🌟🌟🌟Tao Okamoto 🌟🌟🌟on screen. Between Tao on this and Abbey Lee on Lovecraft County, I’m enjoying my noughties favourites onscreen - Sasha Pivovarova cameo in something, please. Anyway, back to Tao. I will always regret not getting the special Vogue Nippon issuededicated to her about 11 years ago, but clearly the show appreciates her face as much as I do. It helps that her bone structure is perfectly suited to both broad daylight and being half-hidden in shadows. Obviously also my MGS fan background coming out, but I will always be a big fan of a female sniper. I think as of the latest episode I’ve watched, Digestivo, she’s meant to have left the scene but I do hope to see her again.

I found two more scenes I couldn’t watch: Mason’s facial surgery and then the part where Will is supposedly getting his face sliced open. Just too much.

Mason’s death was brief but gruesome, I can’t say he didn’t have it coming!

The threesome comment made by the English guy before he gets it is hilarious, not least because Hannibal definitely looks intrigued by the idea.

This post is very incoherent, but I lost the one I drafted yesterday so hopefully this one is posted and doesn’t end up the same way. I still love all the same things about the show I did before!

s0308 - end of series

WHAT

THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH.

Ok! Ok ok ok ok ok ok. What.

Let’s start small. Red Dragon I’ve read and watched the 2002 adaptation. Familiar with the major beats of the story. Dolarhyde devouring the painting - still hilarious. The murders themselves - still gruesome. I think Armitage was a better choice for Dolarhyde than Fiennes every was.

Fanservice - fucking insane. When Freddie calls them “murder husbands”, I thought, ‘That sounds like a tag you’d see on a fic.’ I actually went to ao3 to confirm this. Fans had been using it on their Hannibal/Will fic since s1! Bryan Fuller knows his audience!

“Is Hannibal...in love with me?” Like what is this show? What the fuck is this show?!?!

Rutina Wesley was sooooo good as Reba, I used to love her in True Blood as Tara. You need to be incredibly charming to offset everything else in the plot, and she was great. Honestly a great casting decision.

Is it terrible that I kept laughing at Hannibal’s jokes about Chilton post-maiming? Also, Hannibal opening the door of the police car and talking about mic drops - hilarious.

It felt as the last three episodes drew on all the other characters got faded out til the focus was just on the last three, and then the last two. It’s always been a series about them, so it makes sense, but even I didn’t expect it quite to that extent.

The ending though - Love Crime? Embracing covered in blood? The fall? Wow. What a show. What a show!

I don’t know what else to say except I regret waiting to watch this as long as I did... but then it’s been a great experience.
