HANNIBAL on NBC seems amazing and therefore deserves it's own thread!

I was completely bowled over by the pilot. So amazing. I mean, the plot was hardly finished (there was three murderers and only one was caught in the end, right?) and I didn't like all the acting, but I don't care when other aspects are so well done.

The colours! This is how you do digital colouring. Most of it had this drenched hipster/instamatic look, but then there were just these fields of colour, and not just teal and orange. Deep red, green, beige. Just so very well composed. The scene in the bathroom! And the trailer at the metalwork, with the yellow frame, and the streak of light green grass in the background. The episode had actually beautiful pictures, not just tv-beautiful.

And the rhythm! This sad calmness. Unbearable. Like, the events are so horrifying, but the pilot always returns to the calmness. Like, the main point of the episode was how Hannibal was able to stay calm in the final horrifying scene, when Will just completely lost composure. Now, this is where I'm a bit worried, as the preview showed plenty of beautiful colouring, but whether or not they can keep the rhythm up on a weekly basis remains to be seen.

I know that it is Hannibal, and we've had The Following and Bates Motel, and that there are one hundred other crime shows with massmurder in them, but with the calm and the colours, and the meditation on violence and society, it constantly reminded me of Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. Yes! It was (nearly) that good. I really, really hope they can keep this up. And boy, would I love a second season, though I know it's probably not going to happen.

It reminded me a lot of Manhunter, which I LOVE. I fear it will be cancelled, because it is NBC.

Mikkelsen is a brilliantly expressive actor. I love that withering look he gives his patient when he drops a dirty snot rag on his clean table. I think this series will get a hell of a lot better as it progresses.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 5 April 2013 23:59 (six years ago) Permalink

Not sold on this - it's pretty much an up-market Criminal Minds, right? Aspie profiler is going to wear thin, possibly.

Also, how did Lecter kill a girl, eat her lungs in his DC-area place and then place her body back in Minnesota?

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 6 April 2013 17:37 (six years ago) Permalink

<3 his pack of dogs, tho

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 6 April 2013 17:41 (six years ago) Permalink

I don't mind the aspie profiler thing, what bugged me most was the clunky dialogue from Fishburne to explain his condition to the viewer "Where do you fall on the spectrum?" etc. I like the aesthetic of this series and think it will get better.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Sunday, 7 April 2013 00:02 (six years ago) Permalink

The dogs <3 yeah absolutely!

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Sunday, 7 April 2013 00:02 (six years ago) Permalink

The scene with the dogs was amazing, my eyes got a bit misty both times I saw it. Also, I'm not sure Hannibal neccessarily ate her in DC, he could have gone to Minnesota and killed someone at her own place? It might get clearer in the next few weeks, or it might just be that they don't care about geography. But I loved the implication in the scene where Graham and Lecter eat's breakfast, and Graham speculates that the copycat killer made negative image, that helped clarify all the unique things about who the original killer was. That Lecter kills to help solve crimes.

I, rrational (mh), Monday, 8 April 2013 15:36 (six years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I assume everyone shown this episode is going to be part of the Bones team - concerned lady profiler; Scott Thompson; sassy lab tech woman. That's part of my concern, aside from Scott Thompson being awesome - aside from Hannibal himself, there doesn't appear to be much separating this from all the other slaughterfest procedurals.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 8 April 2013 18:39 (six years ago) Permalink

There's an overarching plot, and the overly-empathetic profiler that they worry about is going to be going to Hannibal (who they think is totally cool) for his therapy?

I, rrational (mh), Monday, 8 April 2013 18:47 (six years ago) Permalink

I thought that the guy playing the profiler looks a bit like Manhunter-era William Petersen, which is a nice touch, in a way.

I, rrational (mh), Monday, 8 April 2013 18:49 (six years ago) Permalink

what if he teams up with CSI william petersen for a crossover, now that i would watch

zero dark (s1ocki), Monday, 8 April 2013 19:42 (six years ago) Permalink

although i always liked the theory that CSI petersen was the same character as in manhunter but older and mellower

zero dark (s1ocki), Monday, 8 April 2013 19:42 (six years ago) Permalink

well, obviously

I, rrational (mh), Monday, 8 April 2013 19:42 (six years ago) Permalink

i've seen red dragon more recently than manhunter so i'm drawing from that but isn't o.g. will's thing not so much that he's a profiler w/ magical empathic capabilities but that he is the profile to a degree? he doesn't have to imagine what it's like to be motivated by envy, covetousness or contempt; it's just below the surface and he just has to let go of the controls just a little bit. like he's stuck in a luke skywalker moment every day of his life where he has to actively choose between oppositional forces because they have equal valence.

slugbuggy, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 16:51 (six years ago) Permalink

I watched the first two eps last night and really enjoyed them! Not the greatest thing ever but I don't really watch any procedurals so I'm happy to have this one.

It's an international co-production so NBC will make all the episodes of the first season order and will air them (they're actually very good for that, Do No Harm excepted). It saw a ratings uptick from week one to week two (take it with a pinch of a salt as it was up against repeats for ep 2) but it was also the best ratings they've had in the Thursday 10pm timeslot in a year (since the premiere of Awake, which dropped off quite severely in it's second week).

I have enough trust in Bryan Fuller that I think this'll be worth the investment in whatever short first season this has got. I actually like Hugh Dancy in this, which surprised me.

Gukbe, Saturday, 13 April 2013 14:59 (six years ago) Permalink

The ratings for week two was really encouraging! Everything NBC has put in this timeslot since 2009 has failed completely, so being flat in week two is no small feat! If it stays like this, they could quite conceivably renew this for a second season, since the chance of something else doing better is very, very low. I really, really want Bryan Fuller to have some kind of succes. He was fired from Dead Like Me, so so far his longest running series is 22 episodes of Pushing Daisies...

seconded, it's not top tier great but it's very good and seems fairly different for a network drama, closer to something like zodiac than dexter (nowhere near as good as zodiac obv just in line w/ fincher saying that w/ zodiac he wanted to make a serial killer movie that serial killer's wouldn't like, an anti-se7en), show is aware that murder is horrible and devestating. lecter is recognizably lector w/o owing any clear debt to hopkins at all.

I'd be interested in knowing how much gore was reinstated for the DVDs because, yes, this show is stunningly graphic.

Just remembered that I never actually finished the series because binging all three seasons in one straight shot became incredibly oppressive at a point. Almost unquestionably the darkest show ever aired on network television.

Goody Rickels on the Dime (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:44 (three months ago) Permalink

AFAIK the DVD edits aren't any different? The episodes as originally aired were unbelievably violent

iirc alana has a slight character shift in season 3 that is incredibly excellent

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:53 (three months ago) Permalink

I think I am going to finish all three seasons in 3 weeks (netflix in south america). I don't know. All the gore with the blaséness of Hannibal and the ridiculousness of some situations gives it levity. I didn't read any of the books and have only seen SilenceotL.
It reminds me of The Cell a bit although I haven't seen that since it was in the theaters.

I think the only major change from the tv release is the inclusion of an episode they left out? The one with Molly Shannon (?) in the first season was pulled due to current events involving child murderers.

Simon H., Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:03 (three months ago) Permalink

I thought she was miscast, but then I saw upthread that she was in Wonderfalls so that makes sense now.

I am really glad that they went with Mads over David Tennant. I liked Tennant as the villain in Jessica Jones but his presence is completely different.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:06 (three months ago) Permalink

Wonderfalls is great, and Dhavernas is very different on it.

The murders on this show were so insanely over the top. The totem pole of corpses, the angel wings, the mushroom people!

mh, Sunday, 17 March 2019 04:38 (two months ago) Permalink

I loved almost all of the trippy first half of S3. I did like Alanna more too. During the kaleidoscope Alanna/Margot scene I said "Oh, they got some payoff for casting two actresses who look a lot alike."

Gah, all of it was so cinematic and darkly funny, I adored it. ( I did start to get a little annoyed at the very metered dialogue though, especially in the Gillian Anderson scenes, but it let me look at her hair more).

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 13:17 (two months ago) Permalink

there are a lot of things about season two i'd consider individually weak (some of the serial killers of the week especially sociopathic social worker vs. stable guy sewing dead people into horses; how it takes two full episodes to introduce mason (???)) but the writing and the long game the show is playing make them work

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 13:20 (two months ago) Permalink

i enjoyed thinking of hannibal as the showrunner of season two, throwing people who had absolutely nothing to do with each other (will/margot/mason) into a weird dramatic plot device about pregnancy. hannibal also casts himself in will graham's role at the very start of the season, so he's basically the writer/director/star of this particular vortex of killings anyway
