Ha, it's true. I just wasn't around to make the obligatory "TOO LOW" posting when it came up, felt the need to express some sorrow that it wasn't recognised as the rightful number one.

emil.y, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:47 (eleven years ago) link

absolutely nothing casual abt frog fractions either, highest ranked "casual" game probably punch quest at 11 or 10000000000 at 14
xp

i played Spelunky and it felt like a pointlessly nerded out version of Boulderdash or something, i just don't feel the magic. still playable in short attention-span bursts tho.

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

i'm not even moaning as such, i don't have much interest in what consoles are offering at the moment. more an observation that a lot of people who i assume have been gaming since they were kids obviously feel the same way.

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

spelunky = platform nethack

Mordy, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

nethack feels a hundred times more surprising/absorbing

maybe i haven't spelunked enough but that's the game's fault imo

tochter tochter, please (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

nice poll everybody! have played hardly any of this. and probably won't!

goole, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

ok i guess i should try frog factions, i don't even remember hearing about it (or at least absorbing those two words together as a unit) until this thread.

question i've always meant to ask, does "rougelike" have some in-jokey meaning or are there just a lot of motherfuckers who can't spell?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:24 (eleven years ago) link

oh oh! You know what game I would have voted for if I'd played it before yesterday? LETTERPRESS

This beat is TWEENCHRONIC (DJP), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

also the reason WoW didn't show up this year is because I finally stopped playing it

This beat is TWEENCHRONIC (DJP), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago) link

frog fractions requires patience and faith if you're gonna play. also don't be scared to check for a gamefaq if you're stuck; forward progress is the game's payoff

Even by Zales standards, that's sad. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago) link

forks what is the deal w/ that howtonotsuckatgamedesign blogger?

Mordy, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago) link

letterpress kinda sucks imo, the strategy involved is a lot simpler than it originally appears

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:29 (eleven years ago) link

xp he makes some interesting points and raises some worthwhile arguments?

Even by Zales standards, that's sad. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

I freely admit that much of the joy I received from Letterpress yesterday was repeatedly pwning jjj while he failed to pay attention to his wife

also from winning a game by playing the word ENZYME and the ensuing rage that caused

This beat is TWEENCHRONIC (DJP), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

games i played after seeing the poll results (while makings gifs), but after i already voted:

XCOM
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
FTL

I would have given XCOM and FTL a bunch of points, enough to push XCOM to #1 and FTL into the top ten.

Z S, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

my ballot:

Borderlands 2 - 15
Fez - 15
Need For Speed: Most Wanted - 15
Black Knight Sword - 10
Far Cry 3 - 10
Frog Fractions - 10
Max Payne 3 - 10
QatQi - 5
Fallen London - 5
Simpsons: Tapped Out - 5

would have added Lollipop Chainsaw on there if i played it in time, def my least bizarro ballot yet for which i feel great shame

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:39 (eleven years ago) link

queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

make yourself play it for longer than 10 minutes. i wasn't the biggest fan after 2 minutes but like most roguelikes, it gets really addicting quickly.

Z S, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

sorry, roguelikes rougelikes

Z S, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

next year, instead of "biggest disappointment" can we have a -10 vote slot that can only be used if accompanied by an angry rant? then we could have amusing entries with negative point values

This beat is TWEENCHRONIC (DJP), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:43 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, def play it long enough where you start getting proficient at the mechanics. i also hated it in the very beginning (i think i complained about it on another thread actually!) but it quickly got very addictive and the longer i played the more fun i had playing it

Mordy, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:43 (eleven years ago) link

@ DJP -- How do you challenge each other, through the Game Center? I'm DrPlasmon if you want to try me.

Spent way too much time on Letterpress last weekend. Really like it when the strategic demands of the board prompt you to find more obscure words. Dislike the way it can devolve into ~INGS ~ED ~ERS repetitiousness. I like it better when the board is mostly less common letters and combinations. Going out with GAUZY (unplayed U, Z, Y) to win 13-12 was my favorite moment so far.

I've only been playing random people, but hardly any of them grasp the basic strategy of controlling valuable tiles. I've been cancelling any game where I'm given first turn and only playing as the challenger, which is considerably harder especially if they start with a corner locked down. It'd be interesting to play a few games in a row against someone who knows what they're doing to see if the game design holds up.

Plasmon, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 18:44 (eleven years ago) link

can't believe no one voted for chrono trigger
